Suspected jihadists kill dozens in eastern Burkina Faso
[France24] Suspected jihadists killed around 50 civilians in Burkina Faso, the Eastern region's governor said Thursday, in the latest attack in the impoverished Sahel nation.

The civilians from Madjoari died on Wednesday trying to flee a jihadist blockade, said Colonel Hubert Yameogo in a statement, adding that the toll was provisional.

Survivors told AFP by telephone they had been trying to get away from the attackers as food ran out.

"The people were intercepted and executed by the terrorists," one survivor said. "All the dead were men."

The governor of the region said: "Security operations are underway to restore peace".

One of the world's poorest countries, Burkina Faso has been shaken by jihadist raids since 2015, with the movements linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

#1  From Deutsche Welle:

The victims were traveling to a town in the nearby commune of Pama, which is close to the country's borders with Benin and Togo. They had been trying to escape a blockade set up by bad boys.

"The people were intercepted and executed by the terrorists," one survivor told news agency AFP. "All the dead were men."

Madjoari saw two other attacks this month, with one killing 17 civilians and another killing 11 soldiers.

Burkina Faso’s president was tossed in a coup in January after members of the armed forces expressed anger over worsening Death Eater attacks. However, levels of violence have remained high.

Earlier this month, eight soldiers were killed and 13 maimed in Burkina Faso’s neighboring state of Togo, possibly the first deadly raid in the country by Death Eaters.

Turkey has detained ISIS's new leader, officials say UPDATE: an unnamed senior leader, anyway

Senior Turkish officials said ISIS's new leader was captured in a recent raid in Istanbul.

Anti-terrorism police and intelligence agents detained a man they believe has led the militant group since its previous chief was killed in a US operation in Syria in February, the officials said, asking not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Turkish news website OdaTV identified the arrested man as Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi without saying how it obtained the information. Previous reports have given a similar name for the new Islamic State militant group leader.

Bloomberg News couldn't independently verify the identity of the man detained by Turkish authorities.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been informed of his capture, the officials said on Thursday (May 26). He's expected to announce the arrest in the coming days, OdaTV said.

The officials said the terrorist leader was captured following lengthy police surveillance of a house where he was staying. OdaTV said police didn't open fire during the raid. Turkish forces have clashed with Islamic State militants at home and in neighbouring Syria over recent years, ousting the militant fighters from several towns near Turkey's border.

News of the detention also came as Ankara is signalling plans for a fresh operation into Syrian territory to confront Kurdish YPG forces backed by the US but viewed as terrorists by Turkey for their links to an autonomy-seeking militant group at home.

The YPG received Western support as one of the most effective forces fighting to dismantle the Islamic State caliphate.
The Times of Israel adds:
No shots were fired during the arrest, according to OdaTV, which did not cite a source for the information.

Officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to Bloomberg said the suspect led the jihadist group since its last leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, was killed in a US operation in Syria in February this year.

According to a Thursday VICE report, Abu Hassan is believed to be Juma al-Badri, the older brother of the first IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi who blew himself up during a US raid in 2019. Al-Baghdadi was succeeded by al-Hashimi who also blew himself up during a February raid by US forces in Syria. A month later IS announced, “Abu Hasan al-Hashemi al-Qurayshi as an emir over believers and the caliph of Muslims.”
Update from Rudaw at 12:25 p.m. ET:

(ISIS) presumed to be the group's leader was arrested in Istanbul, according to media reports surfacing on Thursday, but officials are yet to confirm the suspect’s identity.

The detainee is said to be a "leading" official in ISIS' ranks, and while it is unconfirmed whether he is ISIS leader Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, a top Ottoman Turkish official told AFP on the condition of anonymity on Friday that he is a member of "the leadership cadres" of the jihadist group.

Abu Hassan was declared leader of ISIS in March, a month after former leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed in a daring overnight US special operations raid in Syria.

Ottoman Turkish authorities have yet to confirm media reports claiming that the detainee is Abu Hassan. Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

is expected to address the reports in the coming days.

Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said on Thursday that the US was "not in a position where we can actually confirm that press reporting" when asked about the claims.

The bomb detonated by Abu Ibrahim during his last stand with US forces also led to the deaths of twelve others, including four children and three women, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Rudaw English following the operation.

Three years prior, longtime ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died in a similar US forces raid in another area of Idlib. Baghdadi detonated a boom jacket after being cornered in a tunnel with three of his children.

...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
's defense ministry said.

That brings the number of Ottoman Turkish soldiers killed in the region to six since Tuesday.

Turkey's official news agency Anadolu said the Ottoman Turkish soldiers had clashed with fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara and its Western allies say is a terrorist organization.

The PKK has training camps and bases in autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan and has been waging an insurgency against the Ottoman Turkish state since 1984, a conflict that has killed 40,000 people, many of them civilians.

Ankara has launched a series of operations against PKK fighters in Iraq and Syria, the latest one in northern Iraq beginning in April.

Kurd Kommies Kill two

The Kurdistan Region's counter-terrorism department revealed that two civilians were killed and two others were injured in a rocket attack launched by what it called the "terrorists" of the Kurdistan Workers Party, north of Duhok.

The department said in a statement that the Kurdistan Workers Party's "terrorists" launched two rockets targeting Aradna village, Amerli district.

Earlier today, a security source reported that several casualties were recorded in the aftermath of an unknown shelling on Thursday, north of Duhok.
Rudaw adds:
Two children were killed in Duhok province’s Zewa village on Thursday during festivities between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Ottoman Turkish army, according to sources.

Birqi Omar, mukhtar (chieftain) of Zewa village in Amedi town, told Rudaw’s Hunar Rashid that people from nearby areas picnicked in the village but were targeted with bombs.

"As far as we know, the PKK on Metina mountain targeted Ottoman Turkish military base with three bombs. Then, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
bombed our families, killing two people, aged 10, and injuring another," said the official.

A witness, whose hand was stained with the blood of one of the dead children, told Rudaw that they had left all their picnic goods in the incident area.

Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) later said that two people were killed and two others injured in the incident, blaming the PKK.

Warshin Salman, mayor of Amedi, told Rudaw late Thursday that the children were killed by the PKK.

The PKK-affiliated Rojnews also reported the incident, claiming that the two children were killed by the Ottoman Turkish army.

Neither Turkey nor the PKK have commented on the deadly attack.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Engineer said killed in incident at Iran’s Parchin military facility
Insh’allah
[IsraelTimes] Another employee injured at site that has been linked to country’s nuclear program and seen mysterious blasts in the past.

An engineer was killed and another employee was injured in Iran’s Parchin military complex Wednesday, the Iranian defense ministry said.

Parchin, located south of Tehran, has been tied to Iran’s missile production work and nuclear research. It has been the site of a number of mysterious blasts in the past, which some have suggested were engineered by Iran’s foes.

Iran’s Defense Ministry said the ostensible accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at a research center at Parchin. It did not elaborate on the cause of the accident or provide any further details.

"On Wednesday evening, in an accident that took place in one of the research units of the defense ministry in the Parchin area, engineer Ehsan Ghad Beigi was martyred and one of his colleagues injured," the ministry said in a short statement. "Investigations into the cause of this accident are underway."

The complex is alleged to have hosted past testing of conventional explosives that could be used to detonate a nuclear warhead, something Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
has repeatedly denied.

The site came under renewed scrutiny by the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency in 2015 when Tehran reached a landmark deal with major powers under which it agreed to curb its nuclear activities under UN supervision in return for the lifting of international sanctions.

Iran had previously denied the IAEA access to Parchin, insisting it was a military site unrelated to any nuclear activities, but the agency’s then chief, the late Yukiya Amano, paid a visit.

In June 2020, a gas tank explosion in a "public area" near the complex shook the capital, 30 kilometers (20 miles) away, but caused no casualties, the defense ministry said at the time.

Iran’s nuclear program has been the target of a campaign of sabotage, cyberattacks and liquidations of key scientists that it has blamed on Israel. Other explosions and fires occurred in in Parchin in 2014 and 2007.

The latest incident comes days after a senior IRGC member was fatally shot by two button men on cycle of violences in the middle of Tehran. The killing on Sunday of Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei bore the hallmarks of previous deadly shooting attacks in Iran blamed on Israel, such as those targeting the country’s nuclear scientists.

ISF busts Lebanese-Syrian migrant smuggling ring
[AnNahar] The Internal Security Forces on Thursday announced foiling an attempt to smuggle a large number of people by sea to Italia.

It said the bid was thwarted after the ISF obtained information that a ring of individuals was equipping and renovating a boat in the Dbaye area.

The ISF accordingly managed to arrest the ring’s members — three Syrians and two Lebanese — in the Sin el-Fil and Dbaye areas, an ISF statement said.

The boat was also seized in the Dbaye area, the statement added, noting that the five detainees have confessed to all the charges.

Hizbullah slams Al-Arabiya 'lies' linking group to drugs trade
[AnNahar] Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
’s media relations department has lashed out at the Saudi-owned al-Arabiya satellite television for "fabricating lies and false accusations" that link the Iran-backed group to the "manufacturing and sale of narcotics."

"This is aimed at insulting Hizbullah and tarnishing the image of resistance movements in the eyes of the public opinion," the department said in a statement.

"All of this is in the service of the Israeli enemy and the humiliating schemes of normalizing ties with it, and to deviate attention from the damning facts about the involvement of top Saudi princes and officials in the trade of drugs and captagon pills," the department added.

Al-Arabiya has reported that one of several drug smugglers recently killed by Jordanian forces on Syria’s border was "closely linked" to Hizbullah.

It also said that "Hizbullah-linked groups" and the Syrian army’s Fourth Division led by Maher al-Assad had recently "intensified drugs transportation operations from Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The land area formerly occupied by the state of Lebanon, before that Phoenicia...
to areas in Daraa and Sweida with the aim of smuggling them into Jordan and other Arab countries."

Israel eliminates IRGC officer, who was deputy head of covert unit

New information:
An unnamed intelligence official told The New York Times on Wednesday that Israeli officials had passed along information about the killing of Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, who was shot dead outside his Tehran home on Sunday.
In the original report he was identified as he was identified as Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodayari, so someone got it wrong.
The report did not specify which country the intelligence official represented, but according to Ynet, the Israeli security establishment believes the source was American and is furious about the leak. Israeli officials told the news site that they are demanding answers from their American counterparts, as the report places responsibility for the killing solely on Israel and absolves the US of having played any role. The officials expressed concern that the report might lead to a spike in Iranian attacks against Israeli targets.

According to the Times report, Israeli officials claimed Khodaei was deputy head of the so-called Unit 840, a shadowy division within the IRGC’s expeditionary Quds Force that carries out kidnappings and assassinations of figures outside of Iran, including against Israelis. Khodaei was specifically in charge of 840’s Middle East operations, but he had been involved in attempted terror attacks against Israelis, Europeans and American civilians and government officials in Colombia, Kenya, Ethiopia, the UAE and Cyprus in the last two years alone.

His killing was meant to warn Iran that the group should stop its activities, the intelligence official said.

Iran has never publicly acknowledged the existence of Unit 840 and maintains that Khodaei played a completely different role in the IRGC after joining as a teen, voluntarily enlisting during the Iran-Iraq War and later fighting against the Islamic State in Syria on behalf of the Quds Force.

Two people affiliated with the IRGC told the Times that Khodaei went on to play a key role in the transportation of drone and missile technology to Iran-backed militias in Syria and to Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon. He also served as a tactical adviser to the Syria-based militias.

However, they noted to that Khodaei wasn’t well known outside Iranian security circles and didn’t have a security detail, which would be typical for a senior military official.

On the other hand, senior Quds Force members typically use an alias in the countries they operate, and Khodaei went by “Colonel Shekar,” a Telegram channel affiliated with the IRGC unit was quoted as saying, using the Persian word for hunter.

Quds Force commander Esmail Ghaani attended the funeral, another possible indicator of Khodaei’s stature.

The plan to target Khodaei may date back to at least July 2021, with Israeli intelligence and military officials telling the Times that that was when the Mossad abducted an Iranian named Mansour Rasouli, whom the IRGC recruited as a hitman.

The Mossad agents sought to extract information from Rasouli about the chain of command in Unit 840, according to the Israeli officials.

Israel then leaked the story of the abduction to the Saudi-funded Iran International — a London-based Persian-language news channel — in an effort to highlight its ability to penetrate Iranian security circles and spook Tehran into stopping the operations of Unit 840, the officials told the Times.

Rasouli denied the account in a video posted on social media and BBC and claimed his attackers tortured him, threatened to kill him and his family, and forced him to confess to receiving money from the IRGC to carry out assassinations in Europe.

Iranian state media called the report on Rasouli’s abduction a “fictional tale” at the time, but on Monday announced that authorities had arrested a number of suspects accused of spying for Israel and kidnapping and extracting forced confessions from Iranians.

Khodaei was shot five times in his car by two unidentified gunmen on motorbikes in the middle of Tehran on Sunday.

Iranian authorities have yet to pin down the suspects, even though the incident took place in the heart of one of the most secure areas in Tehran — Mohahedin-e Eslam Street, home to other senior officials in the IRGC and its elite Quds Force.

Israel, which has made no official comments on the incident, has reportedly raised the security alert level at its embassies and consulates around the world, fearing a retaliatory Iranian attack.

Khodaei’s assassination was the most high-profile killing inside Iran since the November 2020 killing of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
Update at 8:45 a.m. ET:
IRGC colonel reportedly plotted to assassinate French Jewish philosopher

[IsraelTimes] An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps colonel killed in Tehran this week allegedly plotted to assassinate French Jewish philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Levy is reportedly among a series of figures who Hassan Sayyad Khodaei planned to have killed or kidnapped.
