32 Kurds en route to Italy arrested in Egypt: family member
[Rudaw] Thirty-two Kurds from the Kurdistan Region were arrested in Egypt trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italia. The father of one told Rudaw that they are being kept in poor conditions and have received harsh treatment by the Egyptian police.

The group of families was on a bus, heading towards Alexandria, according to a video submitted to Rudaw by one of the group. The driver dropped them off, saying they had arrived at their destination, but they were picked up by the police.

"Police then arrested us, and we have been at Burullus cop shoppe for four days," an unidentified Kurdish man said in the video.

"Both the judge and the cop shoppe have said that you are free to leave, yet we are being kept here without any food. We have children with us, we are dying," he added.

The group, which includes people from Erbil, Sulaimani, and Halabja, left for Egypt on April 16.

"They wanted to cross to Italia, but they were arrested on land before reaching any water," Alan Abdullah, whose son is among the group in Egypt, told Rudaw’s Hawraz Gulpi on Sunday.

"Their visa expires on May 17," he added. "They are in a very bad state. They do not even give them food. There are children who are one or two years old."

Abdullah said he last spoke with his son four days ago, when he said they were going to Alexandria. When they were arrested, their phones and identity cards were seized. But one in the group was able to hide his phone from the police and that is now the only connection Abdullah has with his son.

An organization in Sulaimani is working to bring the group home. "Lutka has started its attempts to collect the paperwork of those people and safely bring them back to the Kurdistan Region," Botan Sharbazhery, of the Sulaimani-based Summit Foundation for Refugee and Displaced Affairs (Lutka), told Rudaw English on Sunday.

In November, 27 Kurdish migrants colonists were arrested en route to Italia by the Egyptian navy after their vessel broke down mid-journey.

Egypt is an important transit country for migrants colonists from the Middle East and Africa hoping to reach Europe. In 2016, Egypt passed an anti-human smuggling law and "migrants colonists and asylum seekers in Egypt are particularly vulnerable to detention and deportation," according to a 2019 report by EuroMed Rights.

Those arrested by military in Kano mosque are not Boko Haram members — Families cry out

members in Hotoro Kano, have cried out that those arrested by the military are genuine businessmen and students and not gunnies as claimed.

The Nigerian military had on Saturday said they have arrested about 13 suspected Boko Haram members at Hotoro Kano after intelligence reports on them.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the family who briefed the media, Monday, said those arrested have no connection whatsoever with the dreaded hard boy group.

Abdullahi Ali, spokesperson of the family of those arrested, said for example, Alhaji Usman is the representative of Sheik Ibrahim Saleh who is a renowned Islamic scholar.

He said when the military stormed his House after searching the place and they found nothing, the same person asked them to proceed to his other house where they still didn’t find anything, but still, they left with him.

"Another person, a chemist at the area, is a student at BUK and he had nothing to do with Boko Haram."

To this end the spokesperson of the suspects, appealed to the military to hasten their investigation on them and possibly take them to court.

"We are praying that our brothers would be taken to court after all possible investigations on them, so that justice will be served on them."

holy warriors.

Heavy shootings were heard at about 6 p.m. when the bully boyz attacked the outskirts of Jiddari Polo neighbourhood of Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State.

The attack was the first since Moslems commenced the Ramadan fast 29 days ago.

Residents living in the neighbourhood were seen fleeing into the city centre as soldiers engaged the attackers.

The shooting ,which involved firing of artilleries, rent the air for about an hour before it subsided.

Soldiers were earlier seen trooping towards the direction of the shooting in convoys followed by a military ambulance.

An officer at the 7 Division, Nigeria army confirmed the attack in a text message sent in response to journalists’ request, saying "troops are already there and responding."

The extent of the damage is yet unknown even as unconfirmed sources said some houses were burnt.

Military helicopters were also seen hovering over the area of the attack.

India-Pakistan
J&K: Encounter breaks out between militants, security forces in Anantnag
[OneIndia] An encounter broke out between forces of Evil and security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
on Tuesday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Vailoo in Komernag area of the district early Tuesday following information about presence of forces of Evil there, a police official said.

The official said the search operation turned into an encounter after forces of Evil shot up the security forces.

There are no reports of any casualties so far, he said.

Terrorist hideout busted in J&K's Poonch, 19 grenades seized
[OneIndia] Security forces on Sunday unearthed a terrorist hideout in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
, leading to the recovery of 19 hand grenades and scuttling of a terrorist plan to disturb peace in the border district by carrying out grenade attacks, a defence front man said.

No one was arrested during the operation which was jointly carried out by the Army and police in Phagla area of Surankote, the front man said.

Based on a specific input that holy warriors were planning to target security forces on NH 144A (Jammu-Poonch highway), a well coordinated joint operation was launched by the Rashtriya Rifles and police in Phagla area.

"The relentless development of intelligence by both the agencies led to discovery of a huge cache of grenades, hidden in a well-concealed natural (cave) hideout. A total of 19 hand grenades have been found," the front man said.

He said the recovery of the grenades foiled the designs of inimical elements to disrupt peace and tranquillity in Poonch.

"This busting of hideout has averted a likely major plan of attack on security forces. The Army and police have yet again proven their mettle in the fight against terrorism and their commitment towards stability in the region," the front man said.

This is the second major recovery of explosives in Jammu region in as many days.

On Saturday, security forces recovered 40 kg of high kaboom, five-litre pressure cooker Improvised Explosive Device (IED), five-inch iron pipe IED, four electrical detonators, electrical wire, power sources, six heavy duty cells, insulation tape and 1.5 kg iron splinters from Chakarandi village of Doda district.

Duhok Christian village abandoned under intense Turkish military operation
A spare but useful map can be seen at the link.
[Rudaw] A Christian village in Duhok province has been abandoned after The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
intensified its bombardment of alleged Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in the area. This is the second village to be emptied during Turkey’s ongoing military campaign.

Turkey launched two military operations in Duhok province’s Avashin, Basyan, and Metina areas on April 23, setting up new military bases there. Kesta village in Amedi town was completely evacuated on May 3 due to the intensity of the bombardments, with some families fleeing to neighboring Chalke village.

Now people are fleeing Chalke.

"When the bombardment got close to us, I asked my wife to leave," villager Daniel Yuhanna told Rudaw’s Naif Ramadan. After intense military action, the men of the village met and decided to evacuate, he explained.

Everyone left by Saturday, expect for one man. "I have not abandoned my house and will not until I die. I sleep in my house, disregarding the constant bombardment," said Yusef Zayya.

The village is home to nearly 20 families.

Yuhanna Khoshaba, mukhtar (chief) of Chalke, told Rudaw that he and other villagers have been unable to graze their sheep for more than two weeks due to the military campaign.

Last week, an unwent kaboom! bomb was found near the village. It is still in the village, untouched.

Kesta and Chalke villages are located in the Kani Masi sub-district of Amedi town. According to data provided by Kani Masi mayor’s office, 14 villages in the sub-district have been abandoned due to Turkey-PKK festivities since the 1990s.

Hamas vows revenge after Israel kills top commander in Gaza
[JPost] - Israel was bracing for additional long-range rocket attacks after Hamas warned on Wednesday that it would avenge the deaths of its top commanders with special rocket barrages throughout the evening.

The commanders were killed in a joint IDF- Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) operation earlier Wednesday when the IDF said it carried out a series of targeted killings in Gaza City and Khan Younis, eliminating senior members of Hamas' General Staff who were considered close to the head of the group's military wing, Mohammed Deif.

It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip collapsed on Tuesday night after being hit by an Israeli air strike, witnesses said.

Video footage showed three plumes of thick, black smoke rising from the tower, its upper storeys still intact as they fell. The tower houses an office used by the politicianship of Gaza's rulers, Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",.

Hamas uses 'A-120' rocket, named for slain commander, to fire at Jerusalem
[JPost] Hamas used a new rocket in its attack against Jerusalem on Monday called the A-120 and named for a commander killed by the IDF during the Gaza War of 2014.

The "A-120" is said to have a range of about 120 kilometers and was seen in footage shared by Hamas of a long rocket being loaded by masked terrorists into a launcher in the Gaza Strip. Seven rockets were fired toward Jerusalem on Monday, one of which hit a home in a nearby suburb, causing damage but no injuries.

The rocket is strikingly similar to the R-160 which Hamas boasted as its longest-range domestically-made rocket, first fired in the 2014 war, at one point hitting as far north as near Haifa.

The "R" referred to a former top Hamas commander, Abdel-Aziz Rantisi, who was killed in an Israeli targeted killing in 2004.

The A-120 is said to be named for Ra'ed Al-Attar, who was the commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade in southern Gaza and a member of the terror group’s military council. His command was viewed as important due to Rafah’s proximity to the border with Egypt and being the home to smuggling tunnels into Gaza.

Congressional reports claim that Attar authorized the August 2010 firing of Grad-style rockets from the Sinai Peninsula into Eilat and Aqaba, Jordan.

terror group while condemning Israel for responding to attacks against it and calling to end or condition aid to the Jewish state.

In public remarks during an address which aired on Hamas’ al-Aqsa TV on Friday, Hammad called for the beheading of Jews.

"People of Jerusalem, we want you to cut off the heads of the Jews with knives," he said, clarifying to "cut their [carotid] artery" as he demonstrated doing so with his hand.

The Hamas leader then bragged that the act could be accomplished with little cost.

"Buy a knife, sharpen it, put it here [against the neck], and just cut off [their heads]," he said. "It costs just five shekels [roughly $1.50]."

"With those five shekels you will humiliate the Jewish state," he added.

Explicitly noting that "Jews" are the enemy, and not merely "Israelis" or "Zionists" — which have become euphemisms to avoid charges of antisemitism, Hammad quoted the Islamic Koran in claiming that Jews are most hostile.

"You shall find the strongest in enmity towards the believers to be the Jews and the polytheists," he said.

Hammad added that Jews are guilty of other evils and that their demise is at hand.

"The Jews have spread corruption and have acted with arrogance, and their moment of reckoning has come," he said. "The moment of [their] destruction at your hands has arrived."

Gaza: Hamas, Islamic Jihad vow to step up rockets against Israel
[JPost]"Please beat our asses back til the millennia, now"
Senior leaders of Hamas and PIJ, meanwhile, have reportedly gone into hiding out of fear of being targeted by Israel.

Defiant Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad officials on Tuesday threatened to step up their attacks on Israel after some of their senior military commanders were killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip. In separate statements, the two terrorist groups said they would continue their rocket attacks until Israel "halts its aggression" on the Palestinians in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. They also accused Israel of targeting innocent civilians, including children.

By Tuesday evening, only two groups, PIJ and Humat al-Aqsa, had officially acknowledged the death of their members. Unconfirmed reports said at least four senior Hamas members were killed in Tuesday’s attacks by Israel.

Senior leaders of Hamas and PIJ, meanwhile, have gone into hiding out of fear of being targeted by Israel, according to sources in the Gaza Strip.

"Hamas has not abandoned the equation that says bombings will be met with bombings," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said. "The brave Palestinian resistance, at the forefront of which is the Qassam Brigades, has taken upon itself the responsibility to protect our Palestinian people and to respond strongly and directly to the occupation’s violations and crimes against our people in Jerusalem and worshipers in the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as the targeting of civilians and children."

Israel decided to "transfer the battle to the Gaza Strip after it failed to break the will and determination of the resistance that defends the people and protects their interests," he said.

Hamas and other Gaza-based factions will "continue to repel the [Israeli] aggression with full force, notwithstanding the sacrifices," Barhoum said.

Two killed in Lod in overnight rocket barrage, IDF retaliating in Gaza
This article has already updated at least once since g(r)omgoru posted it last night, so check back throughout the day.
[JPost] More than 200 rockets pounded Israel throughout the night as IDF strikes back at Hamas bases and terror chiefs.

Two Israelis, a man in his 40s and a seven-year-old girl, were killed after a rocket scored a direct hit on a car in Lod early Wednesday morning in a fresh barrage launched by terrorists in the Gaza Strip toward the center of Israel.

The rocket struck Lod as the mixed Jewish-Arab city was shaken by violent riots throughout the night
...a bright idea of the Islamic Movement, Northern Branch (Muslim Brotherhood in Israel) acting as a pincer with Hamas in Gaza?
and brought the death toll in Israel up to five since the fighting began on Monday. Two women were killed in Ashkelon on Tuesday afternoon and in the evening, another woman was killed by a rocket that struck in Rison Lezion. In Bareket in the Shfela region, two men in their 50s and 60s were lightly injured from glass shards as a result of a rocket that landed on a house, Israeli media reported.

More rockets pounded Israel throughout Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with sirens sounding throughout the center of the country and particularly in the South, including Tel Aviv and Beersheba.

The IDF continued its airstrikes on various terror targets in the Gaza Strip throughout the night, including against a multi-story residential building in Gaza which the military said was home to the terror group's intelligence, public relations and Gaza brigade units. Civilians present were warned to evacuate before the bombing.

Other strikes targeted what the military said were rocket launch sites and Hamas offices. Palestinians in Gaza claimed that at least 35 have been killed since the fighting began.

It was the heaviest offensive between Israel and Hamas since the 2014 war in Gaza, and prompted international concern that the situation could spiral out of control.

In another attack, the IDF struck two Hamas operatives responsible for some of the recent rocket launches into Israel: Hassan Kaogi, the head of Hamas' military intelligence security wing, as well as his second-in-command, Wail Issa, the head of Hamas' intelligence counterintelligence wing.

Additionally, the IDF eliminated more senior Hamas officials, including Bassam Issa, the Gaza Brigade commander, Rafa Salama, the Khan Younis Brigade commander and Mohammed Yazouri, the Hamas intelligence commander.

The Iron Dome was activated early Wednesday morning in the city of Dimona, home to Israel's nuclear reactor, to intercept a rocket heading for the city.

On Tuesday night, sirens sounded throughout the center of the country in what officials said was the largest rocket barrage against Tel Aviv in its history. The rockets set off sirens in Herzliya, Ra’anana and the Sharon region. The barrage came after Israel bombed a 13-story building in Gaza.

The Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility on Wednesday morning for over 100 rockets fired at Tel Aviv and 100 rockets fired at Beersheba. Some 1,000 rockets have been fired into Israel since the beginning of the hostilities on Monday.

The barrage came hours after Hamas warned Israel that it would fire missiles into Tel Aviv if the IDF continued to strike buildings in the Gaza Strip.

Another rocket struck a bus in Holon, just south of Tel Aviv. Four people were injured in Holon including the driver of the bus who was critically injured. Another three people were in moderate condition after being injured in the attack, including a five-year-old child.
Now, IDF is going to pound Gaza until "humanitarians" start screaming. IDF will stop, and Hamas will proclaim victory.

ISIS leader arrested in Hasaka
An Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) leader was arrested in Hasaka on Sunday by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), media affiliated to the SDF said, adding that members of an ISIS sleeper cell were also arrested in Deir ez-Zor.

"Anti-terrorism units in the SDF arrested an ISIS leader in the Hasaka region," a military source told the North Press Agency (NPA), adding that the leader was responsible for "gathering information and planning to target operations conducted by the SDF and security forces, as well as leading the terrorist group in the region."

The arrests follow a series of liquidations, targeting civilians, tribal leaders, and members of the SDF.

"A naval force unit stopped a boat detected by radar 10 nautical miles off the city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
" in northern Lebanon on Sunday, it said in a statement.

It said the vessel had been trying "to smuggle 60 people, 59 Syrians and one Lebanese."

Their intended destination was not specified but neighboring Cyprus is the most popular sea smuggling route.

On Saturday, Lebanese police said they stopped 51 Syrians who planned to make the crossing to Cyprus and had paid a smuggler $2,500 each.

The army has said it also stopped another 69 Syrians in the last week of April.

Security sources told AFP that the number of smuggling attempts has been on the rise since last month.

Lebanon, home to more than six million people, is just 160 kilometers from Cyprus.

As well as hosting more than one million refugees from war-torn Syria, Lebanon is grappling with its most severe economic crisis for decades.

Tens of thousands of people, including Syrian and Paleostinian refugees, have lost their jobs or seen their income slashed since 2019.

Their plight has pushed many to attempt sea crossings to EU member Cyprus, which has struck a deal with Lebanon for its navy to intercept such bids.

Nicosia says Cyprus has become the EU's frontline for managing migration and asylum from the eastern Mediterranean.

In March, the Council of Europe's human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
commissioner, Dunja Mijatovic, called on "Cypriot authorities to ensure that independent and effective investigations are carried out into allegations of pushbacks and ill-treatment (of migrants colonists) by members of security forces."

She acknowledged sea crossings and arrivals pose considerable challenges for Cyprus, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, but stressed human rights obligations must be "respected."

Hizbullah Agent Reportedly Hurt in Israeli Strike in Syria
[AnNahar] An Israeli helicopter gunship opened fire on Monday on a home at the edge of Syria's Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, wounding one person, Syrian state TV reported.

The TV said the unidentified man, reported to be a civilian, was taken to hospital for treatment following the attack on the southern Quneitra region.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitoring group, said the targeted man works for Leb

The attack came days after a similar attack by an Israeli helicopter on Quneitra that did not inflict casualties, according to Syrian state media. And on May 5, Israel fired missiles toward northwestern Syria, killing one person and wounding six.

Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked military targets in Syria over the years but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations.

Syrian Regime Forces, ISIS Clash in Hama
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported violent mostly peaceful festivities in the eastern countryside of Hama between regime forces and their proxy Lions of Islam and ISIS.

The festivities were mainly in the countryside of al-Rahjan, during which four pro-regime Lions of Islam were killed, in addition to one ISIS member, and a civilian who was shot.

The Observatory said ISIS’ activity has increased throughout the Syrian desert, and the regime forces and affiliated militias are trying to counter their attacks.

The Observatory documented the death of seven members of regime forces and krazed killers, when two land mines went kaboom! in the Jabal al-Amour area, to the west of the al-Sukhnah area in the eastern desert of Homs.

The corpse count is expected to increase with more than 18 fighters injured, some critically.

The war monitor has documented 1,419 deaths in the ranks of regime forces and loyalist krazed killers, both Syrian and non-Syrian, from March 24 until this day. They include at least two Russians and 149 non-Syrian Lions of Islam loyal to Iran, all of whom were killed during ISIS attacks, bombings and ambushes in the region west of the Euphrates, Deir Ezzor desert, Raqqa, Homs, Sweida, Hama and Aleppo.

The Observatory also documented, during the same period, the killing of 937 ISIS krazed killers.

Meanwhile,
...back at the secret hideout, Scarface Al sneeringly put his proposition to little Nell...
the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched a four-day large-scale military and security operation on Sunday, with the aim of pursuing ISIS sleeper and active cells in Deir Ezzor.

"Our forces and the Global Coalition forces to fight ISIS began this morning a large-scale military and security operation in the Wadi al-Ajij area in the northern countryside of Deir Ezzor," the SDF's media center said in a statement.

The statement explained that the operation also aims to uncover weapons caches and dens used by terrorist members and leaders in the border areas with Iraq.

"The operation also aims to curb the smuggling of weapons and terrorist elements," the statement added.

Lebanon Faces Gasoline Crisis, Unprecedented Meat Price Hike
How 'bout dat? We're like Lebanon!
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] With the imminent lifting of subsidies on basic supplies, a fuel crisis emerged in Leb

in parallel with a further increase in the prices of food products, especially meat and poultry, which prompted the General Labor Union to threaten to take to the streets after Eid al-Fitr holiday.

On Monday, a large number of gas stations abstained from supplying cars with gasoline, while long queues of vehicles waited since early morning to receive a maximum amount of 20 liters of gasoline, a ceiling set by the stations that decided to remain open.

The representative of fuel distributors, Fadi Abu Chakra, said that the current gasoline crisis was due to rumors about an imminent rationalization of subsidy and fear that fuel prices would double.

In remarks to Asharq al-Awsat, he explained that citizens have rushed to fill and store gasoline over the past few days, which led to fuel scarcity in the market.

Abu Chakra clarified that until the moment, subsidy on gasoline has not been lifted; hence prices have not increased, adding that the distributing companies would complete on Tuesday the distribution of gasoline, which is supposed to end this crisis.

The Lebanese army had recently announced thwarting several operations of fuel smuggling into Syrian territory and the arrest of Lebanese and Syrian people involved in smuggling activities.

Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Sergeant Maloney wasn't buying it. It was just too pat. The whole thing smelled phony, kind of like a dead mackeral but without the scales...
prices of foodstuffs witnessed a major increase over the past two days, especially in meat and poultry, after workers in the sector announced that the Central Bank had stopped securing subsidized dollars for importing meat and poultry supplies.

Citizens rushed to the supermarkets after the syndicate announced that the price of chicken would rise by more than 40 percent within weeks. Moreover, a number of butcheries closed their doors protesting the lack of subsidized meat, while others increased the price of a kilo of meat by 30 percent compared to the past week.

The President of the General Labor Union, Bechara al-Asmar, warned that the union would not stand idly by amid what he called a "programmed chaos" aimed at starving the people, threatening to take to the streets after Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Turkish Soldier Killed, 4 Hurt in Attack in Syria
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] A rocket attack on a Ottoman Turkish military supply convoy in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province has killed one soldier and maimed four others, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

Ottoman Turkish forces retaliated to the attack by firing on targets they identified in the region, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It did not elaborate or say who was responsible for the attack late Monday, according to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitoring group, said a roadside kaboom went kaboom! when a Ottoman Turkish convoy of seven vehicles was passing on a road between the border crossing point of Bab al-Hawa and the Syrian border village of Kfar Lousin.

The Observatory said one of the vehicles suffered a direct hit. Ambulances, it said, rushed to the areas to evacuate Ottoman Turkish troops who suffered injuries.

It added that Ottoman Turkish troops cordoned off the area for some time preventing people from reaching it.

Last year, Turkey and Russia reached a cease-fire agreement that stopped a Russian-backed Syrian government offensive on Idlib - the last major opposition stronghold in Syria.

Despite sporadic violations, the agreement has held since then.

Russia is the Syrian government’s main military ally, while Turkey has backed the Syrian opposition.

US Treasury Sanctions 7 Lebanese Tied to Hezbollah Finances
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed new sanctions on seven Lebanese linked to the Iran-backed Hezbollah party and its financial arm.

The measures are the latest against Hezbollah, which Washington considers a terrorist group and has targeted with penalties for years.

The development comes as Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
is experiencing the worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history, including a loss of trust in the country’s once booming banking sector.

The Treasury said six of the seven sanctioned were the group's "shadow bankers," who used the cover of personal accounts at certain Lebanese banks to evade sanctions against Hezbollah's financial arm. They transferred approximately $500 million over the past decade, it said.

The seventh sanctioned person, Ibrahim Daher, is one of Hezbollah’s chief financial executives who oversees the group’s overall budget, including the funding for its operations.

The Treasury said al-Qard al-Hasan — Hezbollah's financial arm which the US has sanctioned since 2007 — has taken a more prominent role over the years. Founded since 1982 and registered as a charity in Lebanon, the association is used by Hezbollah to gain access to the international financial system, the Treasury said.

While the alleged charity "purports to serve the Lebanese people, in practice it illicitly moves funds through shell accounts and controllers," the Treasury said. "By hoarding hard currency that is desperately needed by the Lebanese economy, (it) allows (Hezbollah) to build its own support base and compromise the stability of the Lebanese state."

Al-Qard al-Hasan, considered Lebanon’s largest non-banking financial institution, stepped in amid the latest economic crisis to provide a vital lifeline for many. It has seen a significant increase in clients.

Hezbollah's leader, His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
, recently said the association has provided $3.7 billion in loans to some 1.8 million people since its founding.

Hezbollah "continues to abuse the Lebanese financial sector and drain Lebanon’s financial resources at an already dire time," said Andrea Gacki, director of the Treasury's office of foreign assets control.

"Such actions demonstrate (Hezbollah's) disregard for financial stability, transparency, or accountability in Lebanon," she added.

The Treasury said Daher leads Hezbollah's Central Finance Unit, overseeing its income, budget and coordinating payments of its members while the other six participated in shadow banking activities on behalf of Hezbollah, maintaining joint bank accounts in Lebanese banks that allowed for transfer of money within the formal financial system.

from power barges, said on Tuesday Beirut must halt legal action to seize its vessels and sort out arrears or it will shut down supplies to the country that is mired in a financial crisis.

A Lebanese prosecutor issued a decision last week to seize the barges and fine the firm after TV channel al-Jadeed reported corruption allegations tied to the power contract.

The firm denies the charges and said at the weekend it had not been paid for 18 months, a period coinciding with Lebanon's financial crunch. It also said it wants to find a "reasonable solution" to keep generation going.

A spokesperson for Karpowership, a unit of Karadeniz that operates the floating plants, made Tuesday's comments after Lebanon's Finance Ministry cited a politician saying the country could face "total darkness" if the company shut down supplies.

Even before the economic crisis, Lebanon was unable to meet power demand, forcing many people to rely on private generators. Daily power cuts have been growing steadily longer, lasting much of the day in Beirut, before the latest threat to supplies.

Lebanese politician Nazih Najem was quoted saying Ottoman Turkish power supplies could be halted from the end of this week.

Lebanon's economy has imploded under a mountain of debt, leaving the government struggling to find foreign exchange to meet payments for even basic food requirements and other import needs, including fuel to run its inadequate power stations.

The Karpowership spokesperson said Lebanon must halt action by a prosecutor to seize the company's barges and must draw up a plan to settle arrears.

In a letter seen by Rooters that was sent to Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab on Monday, Karpowership referred to "alarming and baseless" accusations and threats of fines by the prosecutor, saying the action lacked legal due process. It also referred to the payment arrears.

But the company said its priority was "to find a reasonable solution that allows us to continue providing Lebanon with much-needed, low-cost electricity".

The ministry said Karadeniz had threatened to disconnect supply amounting to about 400 megawatts (MW), saying this would reduce generation capacity to 900 MW, well below demand that by some past estimates is more than three times that level.

Karadeniz had warned at the weekend that it could cut supplies, although it also said it hoped a "reasonable solution can be urgently reached" so it could keep supplies running.
