[DAWN] Sudanese protest leaders have announced plans to unveil a civilian body to take over from the ruling military council as demonstrators thronged on Friday outside army headquarters.
The military council, which took power after ousting longtime leader Omar al-Bashir Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it. on April 11, has so far resisted calls from protesters to quickly make way for a civilian administration.
The Sudanese Professionals Association, which has been spearheading the protests, said in a statement that it would name members of the council at a news conference at on Sunday outside the army complex, to which foreign diplomats are also invited.
"We are demanding that this civilian council, which will have representatives of the army, replace the military council," Ahmed al-Rabia, a leader of the umbrella group of unions for doctors, engineers and teachers, said.
Friday marked four months to the day since the government tripled the price of bread, sparking the first protests which escalated into widespread rallies demanding Bashir’s departure.
Access roads were packed, with crowds flocking the huge square outside army headquarters to offer the weekly Moslem prayers.

After the collapse of Islamic State's self-declared caliphate in Syria and Iraq, countries around the world are wrestling with how to handle forces of Evil and their families seeking to return.
"I.C, 24, is suspected for criminal acts of organising a terrorist group, illegal formation and of joining foreign paramilitary or para-police formations, and terrorism," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
Bosnia's state court has tried and convicted 46 people who have returned from Syria or Iraq in the past few years.
Local media identified the man as Ibro Cufurovic from the northwestern town of Velika Kladusa who, along with Armin Curt, 22, from Sarajevo, were tossed into the calaboose by the Kurdish militia more than a year ago.
The prosecution outlined the assistance of the United States in bringing the man back. The United States is the ally of the Kurdish militia operating in the northern Syria.
According to Bosnian intelligence, 241 adults and 80 children left Bosnia or the Bosnian diaspora in 2012-2016 for Syria and Iraq, where 150 more children were born. About 100 adults, including 49 women, remained there while at least 88 have been killed or died.
Several women with children, including the Cufurovic's wife, have pleaded with the Bosnian authorities to be allowed to return home but there is still no clear policy in place on how to deal with them because their children do not hold Bosnian citizenship.
Also on Saturday, another Balkan state, Kosovo, brought back 110 of its citizens from Syria including fighters and 74 children.

[Rudaw] Kosovo authorities announced Saturday they have brought back from Syria 110 Kosovar citizens, mostly women and kiddies, with the assistance of the United States.
Justice Minister Abelard Tahiri, top policeman Rashit Qalaj and a health official told journalists early Saturday that "a planned operation to bring back some of our citizens from Syria ended successfully" bringing back four alleged fighters with the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. Nine children had lost parents during the fighting in Syria.
The group has been taken to a center in Vranidoll, 10 kilometers from the capital Pristina, to be taken care of before sent to homes in the next 72 hours.
Three children were seen playing football inside the shelter, well-protected by special police force surrounding its perimeter.
The four suspected fighters were placed in durance vile I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece! Tahiri said a task force was created in October in close cooperation with the United States.
"Our message is clear: The Kosovo government will strongly continue to prevent and fight violent extremism and terrorism," he said.
The U.S. embassy in Pristina commended Kosovo’s move for setting "an important example" and applauded its "compassion in accepting the return of this large number of civilians."
"The United States remains grateful to the Syrian Democratic Forces for their support in the repatriation and for continuing to humanely detain hundreds more ISIS fighters from dozens of countries," it added.
The minister considered the women and kiddies to be "innocent victims," adding that the authorities had plans to rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society.
More than 400 Kosovars initially joined holy warrior groups in Syria and Iraq, but none has left in the past three years, according to Kosovo authorities.
Qalaj said that 30 Kosovo citizens are still actively supporting the groups there, and there are also 49 women and eight children.
"We shall not allow our citizens to turn into a threat to the Western world and will take all to ensure that those accountable face the law," Tahiri said, adding that "there is no amnesty for any person, be it a woman or a man, who has committed an holy warrior or terror act."

[Al-Rooters] The leader of Turkey's main opposition party was attacked at a soldier's funeral in Ankara before security guards led him away, in the latest fallout from contested local elections three weeks ago.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, head of the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP) that pulled off victories in the March 31 vote, had attended a funeral for one of four Turkish soldiers killed on Friday in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whose AK Party wants the election results annulled in Istanbul, had repeatedly warned during last month's campaign that PKK members were among the CHP's list of candidates.
The PKK clashes in the country's southeast on Friday prompted several pro-government newspapers to tie the soldiers' deaths to the CHP. "PKK out" was among the slogans shouted at Kilicdaroglu on Sunday, according to video footage of the incident.
Several TV broadcasters showed video in which Kilicdaroglu was hit on the head at least twice as a clutch of security guards and a police officer attempted to keep dozens of fist-pumping men away, some of whom were shouting "shame on you" and "God damn you."

[DAWN] An unknown suspect defiled holy books, religious symbols and the inscribed names of revered personalities in a mosque located in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... 's Steel Town area, police said on Saturday.
Steel Town SHO Farrukh Shaharyar said that an unknown suspect broke the door of the Hazrat Salman Farsi mosque, managed by the Shia community, early Friday morning.
The suspect defiled the names of the family of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) inscribed and placed inside the mosque within a frame. He also knocked over and damaged cabinets and shelves where religious books, including the Holy Koran, had been kept, damaged the ceremonial seat of the khateeb (sermon deliverer) and removed a wall clock.
When the muezzin arrived to give the call for the Fajr prayer on Friday morning, he saw that the place had been broken into and informed the police.
Senior coppers, including Malir in charge senior superintendent of police, Farrukh Raza, subsequently visited the mosque.

The newly appointed SAPM also announced that Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan is being given the additional charge of the minister of petroleum ‐ a position held by Ghulam Sarwar Khan until the recent cabinet reshuffle.
She said that "a harmony is being created to bridge the disconnect between the people's expectations and the government's decisions, if there is any," adding that "this is number one on the prime minister's agenda now."
Awan said that "various ministries have been given a variety of targets to provide relief to the masses, especially in the month of Ramazan."
She said that the new finance and economic teams have been instructed to devise policies that are "aligned with the prime minister's vision and priorities".
Awan urged the opposition parties to "play their role and support the government in ridding the problems facing the people of Pakistain" but warned that "if they construe the government's oft-repeated desire for reconciliation as a sign of weakness then that would spawn problems."

[DAWN] Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi on Saturday said that Pakistain expected both Iran and Afghanistan to take action against the terrorist groups behind the Ormara massacre.
While addressing a presser in Islamabad, Qureshi said that the whole country was "angry and upset" over the incident and wanted to know why this incident had taken place and who was behind it.
At least 14 passengers were picked out with the help of their National Identity Cards (NICs), forcibly offloaded from their bus and then rubbed out by person or persons unknown on the Makran Coastal Highway in Ormara, Balochistan ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... early on Thursday.
Qureshi today confirmed that "BRA" ‐ an alliance of a number of Baloch terrorist organizations ‐ had come forward and grabbed credit for this "ghastly event".
He stated, "on the basis of verified information", that the training and logistical camps of this new alliance were based inside Iran's borders.
Qureshi added that following investigations and confirmation, this information has been shared with Iranian authorities.
He said that the location of the camps has also been identified.
The foreign minister said that Pakistain expects Iran to take action against these outfits. Additionally, he said that Pakistain also expects action to be taken by Afghanistan as the BRA's presence and leadership has also been identified there.
Qureshi said that Islamabad expected Kabul to help the country with the same spirit that Pakistain was working towards establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan.
He shared that specific forensic evidence was available, which he said could be shared to trace these "criminals".
"They're criminals who have done this incident," Qureshi reiterated.
The foreign minister shared that he had spoken to his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, prior to the presser and shared the sentiments of the Pak people as well as the expectations of the government.

They should use the Kentucky Vis Center's technique. They do mainly early scrolls and books to fragile to open or unroll. The way they do it is a 3D NMR scan (same units hospitals use) and then digitally unroll or open the pages for the 3D NMR image. This guy is the expert.

Saw this on the History or Discovery channel the other day.
Interesting how they use different color light, RGB IIRC, and then use the computer to merge the images to bring out much more detail. They certainly seemed to know what they were doing.

[Washington Examiner] The United States has decided to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This is a major step toward effectively countering Tehran’s systemic use of terrorism as a tool of statecraft. It is also welcome news for the Iranian people, whose efforts over 40 years to bring about change have been violently suppressed at every turn by the Guard.
The Guard certainly meets the three criteria under 8 U.S.C. 1189 for the terrorism designation: It is a "foreign" organization which "engages in terrorism or terrorist activity or retains the capability and intent to engage in terrorism or terrorist activity" and "threatens American nationals or the national security of the United States."
Mischaracterized by some as a state-run military, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps does not even include the word "Iran" in its name. It recognizes no boundaries. Rather, as "guardian" of the "Islamic Revolution," it answers only to the supreme leader and operates independently of the regular military. It is the core apparatus of repression, the primary driver of war and export of terrorism, and it runs Iran’s nuclear weapons and missile projects. The Guard also controls the lion’s share of Iran’s economy.

[Jpost] Gay Paree expressed concern regarding reports of precision-guided missiles on Lebanese soil, which Israel may strike at.
La Belle France warned Leb that Israel would attack precision-guided rocket systems belonging to Hezbollah, according to a report Saturday in the Holland-based paper al-Hayat.
The paper quoted Arab diplomatic sources as saying that "The French- who have so far been content as observers- inserted themselves into the Iranian line tightening around Syria and Leb, including Hezbollah, and joined in the escalating tone of American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo," after they understood the Americans were serious about ramping up sanctions on Iran.
According to the sources, Gay Paree expressed concern regarding reports of precision-guided missiles on Lebanese soil. The reports were sent by Israel to the French and to the Americans.
"La Belle France considers it Leb's responsibility to take steps to ensure that precision-guided rocket systems" will not have a presence in the country, said one source, "since Israel will not stand by the establishment of such systems with Iranian support." The source emphasized that La Belle France is moving closer to the American position in Syria, therefore it is also concerned about the situation in Leb.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil met with a senior Israeli official in Moscow, and discussed issues of borders, the Syrian war and Iranian weapons factories in Leb.
The Israeli official reportedly told Bassil that Israel does not consider Leb to be an enemy, but that it also will not hesitate to strike at Iranian and Hezbollah targets in Syria.
[SCTimes] The city of St. Cloud this week issued a cease-and-desist order against the Islamic Center of St. Cloud because its security vehicle looks too similar to a police vehicle.
But the president of the center said Thursday they modeled the vehicle's design after other area security vehicles at organizations such as CentraCare Health and Crossroads Center.
Now the city is now looking to curb the use of all non-compliant security vehicles, including those in use at religious centers, businesses and schools such as St. Cloud State University.
Mayor Dave Kleis was alerted to the issue Sunday when City Council member Paul Brandmire called him to report the vehicle, which he said looked similar in color and design to a St. Cloud squad car.
Brandmire said the vehicle reminded him of vehicles he has heard were used in other states like New York to "enforce Sharia Law."
"That raised all kind of red flags," Brandmire said Wednesday. "Why do they need a patrol car?"
He said he didn't know what the vehicle was being used for in St. Cloud.
Mohayadin Mohamed, president of the center, said the vehicle is used for safety and security purposes such as directing traffic.
"It's common sense for when you have that number of people coming at the same time," he said. "Because we're a private organization, we feel that it's our responsibility to at least have some presence of security on our premises.
"They are not out patrolling any neighborhood. We are not going out into the city and walking around," Mohamed added. "This is specifically for our building and our parking lots."
St. Cloud Assistant Police Chief Jeff Oxton said the city talked to the vehicle's owners Tuesday after finding the vehicle violated state law because only law enforcement can use certain colors such as white for public safety vehicles.
After investigating the center's vehicle, Kleis said, the city found other area security vehicles also not in compliance with state statute because many are white with "security" written on the side.
Mohamed said the center has consulted with the police department in the past in regard to general security questions. The center looked to other area security vehicles for inspiration, Mohamed said.
"Those are the designs we looked at," he said. "And all of a sudden this week we've been hearing about a City Council member having an issue with this car. ... It's crazy when you have elected officials talking about issues in other states when they don't talk to their own constituents."
Mohamed said the center is working with the police department to change the car's appearance so it doesn't violate state statute.
"The good thing is we have a good relationship with the city," he said.
Kleis said the city is consulting with the League of Minnesota Cities and wants to give all the owners of the vehicles time to come into compliance.
"We're going to make sure we treat all of those vehicles exactly the same," he said.
Minnesota State Statute 169.98 states all vehicles used by security guards "may have any color other than those specified" for law enforcement vehicles.
The law states municipal police department vehicles "shall be predominantly blue, brown, green, black or white" and the "identity of the government unit operating the vehicle shall be displayed on both front door panels and on the rear of the vehicle."
The law states a security guard may continue to use a motor vehicle that is predominantly black in the course of the individual's employment if the vehicle was being used in that manner before August 2002; a security guard may continue to use a motor vehicle that is predominantly gold in the course of the individual's employment if the vehicle was being used in that manner before August 2012.
Minnesota law states a regulatory agency may issue a cease-and-desist order to stop a person from violating any law.
The person receiving the order has the right to request a hearing on the matter, but if the person does not comply with an order, the regulatory agency may take the person to court or impose a fine.
