Afghanistan
Afghanistan bomb kills Nato personnel in Zabul
A bomb in Afghanistan's southern Zabul province has killed five Americans - three soldiers and two civilians serving with the Nato-led forces - and an Afghan doctor.

The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said they were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a car full of explosives.

Another American civilian was killed in an insurgent attack in the east.

In Zabul, the suicide bomber blew up his car between a convoy carrying the province's governor and his officials, and a US military convoy. They were passing one another by chance just outside a hospital and a school in the provincial capital, Qalat. Zabul province is next to Kandahar, and shares a border with Pakistan.

The BBC's Caroline Wyatt in Kabul says provincial Governor Mohammad Ashraf Nasery believes his vehicle was the intended target.

Afghan donkey bomb kills cop
[Bangla Daily Star] A bomb strapped to the back of a donkey killed one policeman and maimed three civilians in eastern Afghanistan yesterday, officials said.

The explosives were set off when the animal walked close to a police post in the volatile district of Alingar in Laghman province early in the morning, provincial front man Sarhadi Zwak told AFP.

The officials blamed the attack on Talibs who have been waging an insurgency against the western-backed Kabul government since they were tossed in a US-led invasion in late 2001.

Although donkey bombs are rare in Afghanistan, they are occasionally used by forces of Evil to get close to targets.

Last August, a bomb strapped to a donkey blew up in the central province of Ghor killing a local police chief and injuring three others.

Friday's attack came two days after nine Taliban gunnies and suicide kaboomers stormed a court complex in the western province of Farah, killing at least 46 people and wounding up to 100 more.

Prisoners killed in Belad Hawo, Gedo region.
[Shabelle] There are reports coming from Baled Hawo region in Gedo that three prisoners in the custody of the Government were last night short dead.

This happened after the Government troops took the prisoners out of the cells and started to persecute two of the prisoners who were suspected to be members of Alshabab. The third prisoner was said to be a student and a stray bullet caught him during the incident which resulted to his death.

Shabelle media contacted the local Gedo administration, their response was that it was a mistake that happened and cannot be explained how it happened and why it happened. They promised leaders of the region that they will sit down and find a solution for the problem.

The killing of prisoners in Baled Hawo town comes weeks after similar incidents that occurred at the prisons in Mogadishu. The federal government has not yet explained the reasons behind these ugly incidents

[Al Ahram] Tunisia freed on Friday a Salafist sheikh enjugged

on arrival after being expelled by Egypt for falsifying travel papers for jihadists, saying he was not guilty, the justice ministry said.

Tunisian Imed ben Salah, also known as Abou Abdallah Ettounsi, was arrested on March 21 and ordered out of Egypt, according to press reports, for organising the falsification of documents to help jihadists travel to combat zones.

"The prosecutor freed Imed ben Salah, in the absence of a crime being committed," ministry front man Adel Riahi told AFP, adding that he was freed late on Thursday.

When Ben Salah arrived at Tunis airport earlier on Thursday, he was arrested amid a tight security presence after radical Islamist websites called for a big turnout to welcome him.

Militants storm hospital lab
[Libya Herald] A group of 25 militiamen, reported to be members of Ansar Al-Sharia, forced their way into the laboratory testing centre of Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) yesterday morning, Thursday. They claimed that there were out of date materials on the premises.

Orthopedic specialist at the centre, Dr Salem Naqqi, said that staff and patients alike were shocked at the intrusion which forced staff to stop work and leave, according to Solidarity Press. The laboratory was closed for three hours as a result.

Naqqi was reported as saying that SSC guards had unsuccessfully tried to prevent the intruders for entering.

The Islamic fascisti reportedly found some equipment that had an expiry date of two day's earlier -- 2 April 2013. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the doctor said these were not used on patients. In any event such materials, he noted, could be used for between six months and a year after expiry date, and the GNC's medical committee were aware of it.

Expressed resentment at the storming of the laboratory, Naqqi said the closure had put the lives of patients in intensive care patients at risk because of delayed test results.

An incident such as this, he said, shook the public confidence in the BMC. The laboratory was a sterile environment, he added, and should never be entered, let alone stormed, by anyone without official permission. He added that it contained classified patient information which should never be compromised.

If anyone had complaints, he said, they should submit them to the professional bodies responsible who could then take necessary action.

Algerian governor escapes Al-Qaeda assassination
[MAGHAREBIA] Medea wali Brahim Merad on Wednesday (April 3rd) survived an liquidation attempt by al-Qaeda faceless myrmidons in the Algerian city of Mezghena.

Terrorists opened fire on coppers who were securing the route for the governor's convoy going to an event. One police officer was killed and two others were maimed and were taken to a hospital in Tablat.

There are conflicting reports as to what happened, El Watan noted. One of the newspaper's sources said that faceless myrmidons started shooting into a crowd of people they thought were surrounding the governor.

Egypt's Azhar, Mursi supporters clash near Muslim Brotherhood HQ
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Clashes took place Friday between supporters of Sunni Islam's top religious authority al-Azhar, and those of Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Mursi, an Al Arabiya correspondent reported.

The festivities, near the Moslem Brüderbund headquarters in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, left tens of people injured.

The spat between the Brotherhood and the center of Islamic learning began when the principle of Egypt's Azhar University, Osama al-Abed, was dismissed Wednesday amid protests against alleged food poisoning that struck more than 500 students.

Some in the opposition accuse the Brotherhood of having concocted the mass-poisoning scandal in an attempt to control the institution.

Following Abed's dismissal, there were calls by the Brotherhood to sack Azhar's Grand Mufti Ahmed al-Tayeb.

In an interview with Al Arabiya on Thursday, Azhar holy man Sheikh Ahmed Karima accused the Brotherhood of exploiting the food-poisoning incident.

"The escalation of the situation has nothing to do with the poisoning of students' stomachs, but the poisoning of students' brains," Karima said.

Since Abed has been dismissed, so should Prime Minister Hisham Qandil, as he is also responsible of Azhar's affairs, Karima added.

Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawky Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam also defended Azhar and Tayeb.

Any attack on Azhar would "undermine Egypt's security," Ahram Online quoted Allam as saying Thursday.

Rebels take army post near Syria's southern border
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian rebels said they overran an army garrison that defends the main southern border crossing with Jordan on Friday and vowed to press on to take control of the major transit route.

Fighters from the Free Syrian Army said they captured the Umal-Mayathen post on the main Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
-Jordan highway in heavy fighting overnight that ended a siege that lasted more than a week. Dozens died in the festivities they said.

"It (the garrison) is a major defense and now we will lay siege to the border crossing and cut their (the Damascus government's) supply lines," Abu Omar, commander of the Lions of the Sunna Brigade, told Rooters by phone.

The army post is several kilometres (miles) from Syria's 'Nassib border crossing which, before Syria's two-year-old civil war broke out, funneled billions of dollars of trade between Gulf countries, Turkey and Europe.

Syria's southern provinces bordering Jordan and Israel have become an increasingly significant battleground as the capital comes under pressure, with Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
's forces and his loyalist militias hitting back hard.

The intensified fighting has also led to an unprecedented influx of refugees through Jordan's 370 km (230 mile) border with Syria this year.

Rebels have stepped up fighting for control of the border area and the nearby town of Deraa in the last two months, gaining territory and capturing several bases.

They have also overrun several towns near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, fuelling tensions in the sensitive military zone.

Only two weeks ago they seized an air defense base near the strategic southern international highway, bolstering access to supply routes to the capital Damascus.

Rebels say their capture of large amounts of weapons, ammunition and vehicles has helped them to maintain an offensive after a long period in which the southern border area was quiet compared to northern and eastern parts of Syria.

"The latest gains have given us more weapons, helping the free army to mount even more attacks on key army positions," said Abu Salim, from Liwa Tawheed al-Janoob brigade.

Jordan has stepped up security and deployed more troops to the border, a Jordanian army source said.

Diplomatic and regional intelligence sources also said Amman was allowing limited supplies of light arms to moderate rebel groups opposed to the Nusra front, an Islamist bad boy group suspected of links to al Qaeda and blacklisted by the United States as a "terrorist group."

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, U.S., Pakistan, Egypt. Possibly some muslim nations in SE Asia.

Various and sundry NGOs like AlQ. AQIM, the Muslim Brotherhood, Libyan militias, other Sunni militias and organizations, private Sunni financiers/citizens, and 'charitable' organizations affiliated with a mosque or not.

Assad deploys foreign fighters in capital to protect Shiite shrines
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Shiite fighters from neighboring countries are flocking to Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
to defend their religious sites and defend Bashir al-Assad against advancing Sunni-dominated opposition forces. Many of these foreign guerrillas fight under the umbrella group of Abu al Fadl al-Abbas brigade. They come from Iraq, Leb, Iran and Pakistain.

In Damascus, they are no strangers; they roam the streets and often clash with the members of the Free Syrian Army.

Their brigade is based in Sayeda Zeinab district and its 12 battalions are deployed in al-Hajar al-Aswad and Qaboun.

Leaked footage shows the deployment of brigade members under the flag of the Syrian regime army in al-Jobar.

The brigade was formed a few months ago amid the escalation of festivities around the capital, and is now fighting its main battles around the shrine of Sayeda Zeinab, south of Damascus.

The growing phenomenon of imported muscle in the regime's army follows the public calls by State Mufti, Ahmad Hassoun, who believes it is every Moslem's duty to defend the regime. His call has apparently been heard and reinforced by Damascus' sectarian dimension.

Kidnap threat stalks Syrians
Syria’s residents, already terrorised by a conflict now in its third year, are also being stalked by the increasing threat of kidnap, with motives ranging from sectarianism and prisoner exchange to ransom.

Syria’s government on Tuesday offered kidnappers an amnesty deal, giving them 15 days to hand over victims or face sentences ranging from life with hard labour to execution, if their victims were murdered or sexually abused.
Boy howdy, that'll motivate the kidnappers, particularly if they're rebels...
The decree speaks to the scale of the problem, which has spared virtually no corner of the country, affecting civilians and fighters from both sides and implicating both opposition forces and supporters of the regime. But it is unlikely to stem the flow of disappearances carried out by regime loyalists,
...nod nod wink wink...
nor convince rebel forces or criminal gangs operating in largely lawless swathes of the country to turn themselves in.

Motives appear to vary widely, even overlapping at times, with kidnappers targeting victims on the basis of sectarian affiliations, but also demanding ransoms.

Lama Fakih, a Human Rights Watch researcher on Syria and Lebanon, said the group has also documented “tit-for-tat kidnappings, sometimes between neighbourhoods, where people take someone in order to exchange them for someone else.”

“We also see some instances of kidnappings where it does seem that religious minorities are more vulnerable to these sorts of attacks because they are seen to be supporters of the government,” she said.

Activists say kidnappings motivated by sectarian hatred are more common in areas where communities of different religious backgrounds live near each other but are separated by frontlines.

Men, women and even children have been affected, and kidnappers often demand sums around three million Syrian pounds ($42,000).

Some Damascus residents say they have altered their habits accordingly, ditching expensive cars for nondescript ones, dressing down and avoiding walking in the street alone where possible.

“Most kidnappers are motivated by a desire for financial gain, though some operate on a sectarian basis,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman c, describing the emergence of “organised gangs” of kidnappers.

“They are warlords who take advantage of the insecurity that is ravaging the country,” he said.

Activists acknowledge that rebels are also involved in kidnapping, seeking ransoms to finance their fight. In the area around Damascus, one activist said, “most (kidnapping) has been committed by regime forces — including pro-regime militia — or rebels.”

“We haven’t seen many (criminal) gangs motivated purely by financial gain emerge here.”

Rights groups including Amnesty International say they have documented sectarian and political kidnappings by opposition fighters.

“These have included people captured apparently because of their nationality... or their political views, notably for belonging to the ruling Ba’ath Party or for otherwise supporting the Syrian government,” the group said.

“We condemn kidnapping in all its forms, and whatever the excuses used to justify it,” Ahmad al-Khatib of the Syrian Revolution General Commission, a grassroots network of activists, said.

And opposition members are also victims of the phenomenon, with thousands reportedly “disappeared” — usually abducted by government forces or supporters of the regime.

“The numbers of individuals that are disappeared that are affiliated with the opposition are incredibly high,” Fakih said. “So it’s certainly not something that’s just happening on one side of the conflict.”
