Mozambique: Multiple People Trapped in Mozambique Hotel After Militant Attack
[AllAfrica] As bully boyz launched an attack on Mozambique's Palma, workers are seeking refuge at the Amarula hotel. An operation is underway to rescue the workers, said the government.

More than 180 people are trapped inside a hotel in a town in northern Mozambique, as it has been under siege by faceless myrmidons for the last three days. Those trapped include expatriate workers.

Militants launched an attack on Wednesday afternoon, forcing locals to flee into surrounding forest areas.

The attacks occurred after French energy giant Total announced that work would gradually resume at the liquified natural gas project. Total is the principal investor in the region, with other firms such as ExxonMobil also involved in the area.

RESCUE OPERATION IN PROGRESS
Some people have reportedly been killed, according to witnesses and rights groups, after the attack in Palma near a liquified natural gas site in Cabo Delgado province. Workers from the LNG site sought refuge in a local hotel. The military was trying to airlift workers from the hotel.

"Almost the entire town was destroyed. Many people are dead. As locals fled to the bush, workers from LNG companies, including foreigners, took refuge in hotel Amarula where they are waiting to be rescued," a worker told the AFP news agency, on the condition of anonymity.

An unverified video on social media showed an unidentified man filmed the hotel lobby showing several people milling around the patio. He described the situation in Palma as "critical" and added, "We don't know if we will be rescued."

He said the hotel had run out of food but still had water. The buzzing of a chopper could be heard in the background.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE
The government of Mozambique said soldiers launched an offensive on the bad boys. The forces were "working tirelessly to re-establish security and order as fast as possible," said Ministry of Defense front man Col. Omar Saranga at a presser on Thursday. He added that they will "do everything to guarantee the security."

Rights group Human Rights Watch said on Friday, "Several witnesses told Human Rights Watch that they saw bodies on the streets and residents fleeing after the al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
fighters fired indiscriminately at people and buildings."

According to the AP news agency, hundreds have sought refuge in Quitunda, a village near the Total project.

Palma had largely been cut off from the rest of the province, as faceless myrmidons made road travel unsafe, leaving only the airport and seaport as modes of transport.

Militants affiliated with the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group have attacked several towns and villages in the region, causing nearly 700,000 to flee their homes.

According to the US-based data collecting agency Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), the violence has caused the death of more than 2,600 people. Half of those killed have been civilians.

Gunmen kill 26 in volatile central Nigeria
[AlAhram] Dozens of cycle of violence-riding assailants called bandidos by locals late on Monday opened fire on the vigilantes in an ambush, outside Kotonkoro village in Mariga district in Niger state, killing 25

Criminal gangs have killed two dozen local vigilate guards and a soldier in central Nigeria, officials said on Friday, in the latest violence in the restive region.

Dozens of cycle of violence-riding assailants called bandidos by locals late on Monday opened fire on the vigilantes in an ambush, outside Kotonkoro village in Mariga district in Niger state, killing 25.

Local communities often form semi-official self-defense groups to collaborate with security forces against gangs of kidnappers and cattle rustlers who raid and pillage villages in Nigeria's northwest and central states.

"We have lost 25 members to the bandidos," Abu Hashim, head of vigilantes in Mariga, told AFP.

"We have recovered 20 of the dear departed but we are yet to reclaim five more bodies which are still in the bush," he said.

A local politician, Ibrahim Ilyasu, confirmed the attack, saying a soldier was also killed.

The vigilantes were on the trail of the bandidos who had attacked a military post at the outskirts of the village, killing a soldier in a shootout, Ilyasu told AFP.

"The bandidos attacked a military post and killed a soldier, so the vigilantes went after them," he said.

"Unfortunately, the bandidos laid an ambush on the team and opened fire on them, killing more than 20," he said.

Northwest and central Nigeria are a hub of criminal gangs who steal cattle and kidnap for ransom. They raid villages, killing and abducting residents after looting and burning homes.

The gangs who are driven by financial motives, have no ideological leanings but there is growing concern they are being infiltrated by jihadists from the northeast who have waged an insurrection for more than a decade.

The bandidos are increasingly targeting schools and abducting students, further worsening the state of education in the regions.

Last month, gangs kidnapped 42 people, including 27 students from an all-boys boarding secondary school in Kagara town in Niger state. The hostages were released days later following negotiations with the authorities, but it was not clear if a ransom was paid.

Arabia
Saudi-led coalition destroys Houthi rigged boats, drones - state media
[Jpost] The Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen's Houthi forces has destroyed two explosive-laden boats that the Iran-aligned group planned to use in an "imminent" attack launched from the Red Sea port of Hodeidah, Saudi state media reported on Sunday.

The coalition also said it intercepted and destroyed two armed drones launched towards southern Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis, who ousted Yemen's internationally recognised government from the capital, Sanaa, and now hold most of north Yemen, have kept up missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia after Riyadh last week presented a new peace initiative.

US Special Envoy Tim Lenderking on Thursday returned to the region to push for the initiative, which includes a nationwide ceasefire.

The Houthis want the coalition to fully lift its sea and air blockade on areas the group controls.

The conflict, seen in the region as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has caused what the United Nations says is the world's largest humanitarian crisis.

The Houthis say they are fighting a corrupt system and foreign aggression.

Petition defending Muhammad cartoon teacher gets 7500 signatures
More on this report from yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] Instructor in town of Batley suspended, school apologizes, while protesters demand he be fired; student-led petition defending teacher garners thousands of signatures.

A British teacher’s use of an offensive cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad as part of a lesson sparked an outcry this week, causing protests, the temporary closure of the school and a student petition in the teacher’s defense.

The teacher, who has not been publicly named, was suspended after showing a 9th-grade class a caricature of the Moslem prophet as part of a lesson about blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
He warned students before showing the image, which is believed to have been taken from the French satirical news outlet Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, The Times reported. The newspaper was attacked by snuffies who killed 12 people over cartoons in 2015.

A small group of protesters demanded the teacher be fired outside the Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire on Saturday, The Guardian reported. The area has a large Moslem community.

The school was closed and lessons moved online for two days, while the teacher was said to be in hiding for his safety.

The school and teacher both apologized for the lesson.

"The school unequivocally apologizes for using a totally inappropriate image in a recent religious studies lesson," school principal Gary Kibble said in a televised statement.

"The member of staff has also related their most sincere apologies," he said.

"It’s important for children to learn about faiths and beliefs. This must be done in a respectful, sensitive way."

A petition defending the teacher, led by students, had gathered over 7,500 signatures.

The UK education secretary, Gavin Williamson, said, It is never acceptable to threaten or intimidate teachers."

"The nature of protest we have seen, including issuing threats and in violation of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
restrictions are completely unacceptable and must be brought to an end," Williamson said.

The Department of Education said, "The nature of protest we have seen, including issuing threats and in violation of coronavirus restrictions, are completely unacceptable and must be brought to an end."

One protester told The BBC the cartoon offended "the whole Moslem community."

"This is a time when we can’t stay quiet, we need to stand up and let them know, the head teacher, the school and the governing body, that this is not something light. There’s a line you can’t cross," he said.

The founder of a local charity called Purpose Of Life, Mohammad Sajad Hussain, said he was "deeply hurt" by the "insulting caricatures of our beloved Prophet Mohammed."

The National Secular Society called the protest an "attempt to impose an Islamic blasphemy taboo on a school."

The protests were reportedly peaceful, and police had not made any arrests or issued fines.

The UK incident came after a teacher in La Belle France was murdered in October by a radical Chechen teenager for showing cartoons of the prophet to students during a lesson on free speech.

In 2019, Moslem parents staged protests at a primary school in the central city of Birmingham after it held lessons incorporating same-sex relationships and transgender issues.

Iraq
Pentagon linguist pleads guilty to exposing U.S. human assets

More on this story below.
[CBS] - A linguist for the Department of Defense pleaded guilty on Friday to passing classified information about U.S. human intelligence sources to an individual with ties to Hezbollah, a Lebanese terrorist organization, the Department of Justice said. Mariam Taha Thompson began sending the information after the U.S. killed Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander, in an airstrike in early 2020, according to court documents.

Thompson, who held a top secret security clearance, had been stationed at a Special Operations Task Force facility in Iraq from mid-December 2019 until her arrest a few months later.

Years before she began passing classified information, she was introduced to a Lebanese national on social media via a family member, according to the statement of facts that she agreed to as part of her plea. Though she never met the man in person, the man expressed interest in marrying her and having her move to Lebanon, the court documents said. The two communicated frequently from 2017 to 2020.

U.S. DOD linguist based in Iraq revealed the ID of 10+ secret human assets & 20+ U.S. targets to an intermediary for Hezbollah
See here for more.
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

A Minnesota woman pleaded guilty today to one count of delivering national defense information to aid a foreign government.

According to court documents, Mariam Taha Thompson, 63, formerly of Rochester, Minnesota, worked as a contract linguist at an overseas U.S. military facility where she was entrusted with a top secret government security clearance. Thompson pleaded guilty to transmitting highly sensitive classified national defense information to a foreign national who she believed would provide the information to Lebanese Hizballah, a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Thompson admitted that, beginning in 2017, she started communicating with her unindicted co-conspirator using a video-chat feature on a secure text and voice messaging application. Over time, Thompson developed a romantic interest in her co-conspirator. Thompson learned that the unindicted co-conspirator had a family member who was in the Lebanese Ministry of the Interior, and that the unindicted co-conspirator claimed to have received a ring from His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
, the secretary-general of Lebanese Hizballah.

In December 2019, while Thompson was assigned to a special operations task force facility in Iraq, the United States launched a series of Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s in Iraq targeting Kata’ib Hizballah, an Iranian-backed foreign terrorist organization. These airstrikes culminated in a Jan. 3, 2020, strike that resulted in the death of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force commander Qasem Suleimani, as well as the founder of Kata’ib Hizballah, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Following Suleimani’s death, the unindicted co-conspirator started asking Thompson to provide "them" with information about the human assets who had helped the United States to target Suleimani. Thompson admitted that she understood "them" to be Lebanese Hizballah, including an unnamed high-ranking military commander.

After receiving this request for information in early January 2020, Thompson began accessing dozens of files concerning human intelligence sources, including true names, personal identification data, background information and photographs of the human assets, as well as operational cables detailing information the assets provided to the U.S. government. Thompson used several techniques to pass this information on to the unindicted co-conspirator, who told her that his contacts were pleased with the information, and that the Lebanese Hizballah military commander wanted to meet Thompson when she came to Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
When she was arrested by the FBI on Feb. 27, 2020, Thompson had used her access to classified national defense information to provide her co-conspirator with the identities of at least eight clandestine human assets; at least 10 U.S. targets; and multiple tactics, techniques and procedures. Thompson intended and had reason to believe that this classified national defense information would be used to the injury of the United States and to the advantage of Lebanese Hizballah.

Thompson faces a maximum sentence of up to life imprisonment.

#3  DoD contract analysts, the downside.

Mariam Taha Thompson, 63, formerly of Rochester, Minnesota.....contract linguists or deep plant? Yes, key word/name 'Taha.' Depending upon the discipline, and one can easily guess what her job was, it would be fairly simply task over time to 'rack & stack' known targets and assets. No telling how may networks or people she was actually responsible for terminating.

As you may recall, the Iranian regime did indicate there would be "consequences" connected to the death of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force commander Qasem Suleimani.

A massive, but preventable intelligence failure. Sickening, all very, very sickening.

Are you interested in joining? The benefits are terrific. The trick is not to get killed. That's really the key to the benefit program.

Indonesia: Explosion at church causes casualties Update: 20 maimed, 2 jacket wallahs toes up
[DW] A suspected kaboom has rocked a Catholic church in the Indonesian city of Makassar on Palm Sunday, injuring several people.

A suspected jacket wallah blew themselves up outside a cathedral in Indonesia's South Sulawesi province on Sunday

The explosion took place at the main Catholic church in the city of Makassar and caused casualties, police said.

The congregation had been inside the church at the time of the earth-shattering kaboom, South Sulawesi police front man E. Zulpan told Rooters.

"We see that there are victims and parts of human bodies have been torn apart. We do not know yet whether they are from the perpetrator or from the people who were close by," he said.

PRIEST TELLS OF SEVERAL INJURED
Father Wilhemus Tulak, a priest at the church, told local media that the suspected bomber tried to enter the church grounds on a cycle of violence, but had been stopped by a security guard.

Ten people had been maimed in total, some of them seriously, he said.

The explosion happened just after Sunday services wrapped up, the church's pastor told Metro TV. Video from the scene showed police had set up a cordon around the church and cars parked nearby were damaged.

The blast took place at 10:28 a.m. local time (0328 UTC/GMT).

The Kompas TV news channel said it was a suspected suicide kaboom.

NO CLAIM OF RESPONSIBILITY
Police did not say who might be responsible for the apparent attack and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Makassar is Indonesia's fifth-largest urban center after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and Medan, with a population of 1.5 million.

Churches have been targeted previously by Death Eaters in Indonesia, the world's biggest Moslem-majority nation. In 2018, a dozen people were killed when a family of suicide bombers blew themselves up at churches during Sunday services in the second-biggest city Surabaya.

The country's deadliest Islamist bully boy attack took place on the tourist island of Bali in 2002, when bombers killed 202 people, most of them foreign tourists.
Update from ABC News at 1:30 p.m. ET courtesy of Clem:
Two attackers have blown themselves up outside a packed Roman Catholic cathedral during a Palm Sunday Mass on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, wounding at least 20 people.

A video obtained by The Associated Press showed body parts scattered near a burning motorbike at the gates of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province.

Police later said both attackers were killed instantly and evidence collected at the scene indicated one of the two was a woman. The maimed included four guards and several churchgoers, police said.

The attack a week before Easter in the world's most populous Moslem-majority nation came as the country was on high alert following December's arrest of the leader of the Southeast Asian bad boy group, Jemaah Islamiyah, which has been designated a terror group by many nations.

President Joko Widodo condemned Sunday’s attack and said it has nothing to do with any religion as all religions would not tolerate any kind of terrorism.

"I call on people to remain calm while worshipping because the state guarantees you can worship without fear," Widodo said in a televised address.

He offered his prayers to those injured and said the government would cover all costs of medical treatment. He said he had ordered the national police chief to investigate the attack and crack down on any krazed killer network that may be involved.

At least 20 people were maimed in the attack and had been admitted to hospitals for treatment, said Mohammad Mahfud, the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs.

Indonesia's National Police spokesperson Argo Yuwono said police were still trying to identify the two attackers on the cycle of violence and whether they were linked to a local affiliate of the banned Jemaah Islamiyah network or were acting independently.

Indonesian forces in December arrested the group's leader Aris Sumarsono, also known as Zulkarnaen. Over the past month the country's counterterrorism squad has arrested about 64 suspects, including 19 in Makassar, following a tipoff about possible attacks against police and places of worship.

While Jemaah Islamiyah has been weakened over the past decade by a sustained crackdown, in recent years a new threat has emerged in militants who fought with the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and returned to Indonesia or those inspired by the group’s attacks abroad.

Indonesia's last major attack was in May 2018, when two families carried out a series of suicide bombings on churches in the second-largest city of Surabaya, killing a dozen people including two young girls whose parents had involved them in one of the attacks. Police said the father was the leader of a local affiliate of the Islamic State group known as Jemaah Anshorut Daulah.
