Taliban captures 50 border police as fighting intensifies in western Afghanistan
KABUL (Reuters) - At least 50 members of the Afghan security forces have surrendered to the Taliban in a fight for control of Afghanistan’s western province of Badghis that has created heavy casualties, officials said.

Fighting in Afghanistan has intensified even as Taliban and U.S. officials finished the latest round of peace talks on Tuesday, with both sides citing progress.

Afghanistan usually sees a marked increase in violence in spring.

Some 100 Afghan personnel who are part of the interior ministry’s border police attempted to flee their posts into neighboring Turkmenistan on Saturday, but they were prevented from entering that country, Badghis provincial council chairman Abdul Aziz Bik said on Sunday.

About 50 Afghan border police surrendered, while the remaining 50 continued fighting in the district of Bala Murghab, he said. Bala Murghab is the province’s most populous district.

Battles Intensify Amid Efforts For Peace
[ToloNews] As the new war season inches closer, battles have intensified between Afghan forces and Talibs in different parts of the country at a time that the group just wrapped up 16-day talks with US negotiators to find a political settlement to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Heavy battles were reported in the past two days in southern and western parts of the country which inflicted casualties to both sides.

Badghis has been a volatile province in the northwest of the country over the past 10 days after a group of Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
attacked government forces outposts in Bala Murghab district in the province ‐ which shares border with Turkmenistan.

Officials said on Saturday that more than a dozen security force members left their bases in Murichaq area in Badghis’s Bala Murghab district and fled to the bordering areas between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

Around 20 Afghan soldiers were killed in Bala Murghab festivities, security officials said, adding that Taliban also suffered heavy fatalities.

Zmarai Faizi, Commander of 207 Zafar Military Corps, said at least 50 Taliban fighters were killed in Arclight airstrikes carried out by the Afghan Air Force.

Footage released by Ministry of Defense shows Afghan Air Force targeting a Taliban hideout in Bala Murghab district on Friday night.

The Ministry of Interior Affairs said comprehensive plans are underway to address security challenges.

"The new leadership of the Interior Ministry has effective and comprehensive plans on law enforcement, fighting crimes, fighting intoxicants and fighting terror," said Nusrat Rahimi, a front man for Ministry of Interior Affairs.

CIVILIAN CASUALTIES
Some residents of Zurmat district in Paktia province, who took bodies of five civilians to the bucolic provincial capital on Saturday, said the non-combatants were killed on in an Afghan forces operation in the district on Friday night.

"Last night at around 10 pm, they came and conducted the attack," said Timor, a resident of Zurmat.

"The victims were working on their agricultural lands and everyone knows this," said Rasul Khan, a Zurmat resident.

In the northern Kunduz province, some people gathered in Kunduz city and called on warring parties to announce a ceasefire.

Kunduz city has fallen to gunnies twice in the last four years.

"We want both sides to announce a ceasefire," said Sayed Parwiz, a Kunduz resident.

"We are tired of war. We do not want to people to be killed, and we do not want our sons to become orphans or wives to become widows," said Shirzai, a Kunduz resident.

At least 8 dead as gunmen storm Mali army camp
[PULSE.NG] Suspected jihadists killed at least eight people Sunday in a raid on an army camp in central Mali, military and security sources said, warning the toll could rise.

Driving cars and cycle of violences, the attackers stormed Dioura army camp in the Mopti region at dawn, leaving "many soldiers dead or missing", a military source said.

Separately, a Malian security source spoke of "a heavy toll of at least eight dead".

"There are dead soldiers, others are missing and still others are maimed," he said, but could not confirm reports from local villagers that up to 15 troops had died.

A second military source said the troops had tried to fight off the attackers.

"Our men responded. I saw at least four bodies on the ground. We don't have an exact toll yet but there is a lot of damage," he said.

A foreign security source said local residents estimated at least 15 people had been killed.

President Ibrahim Boubakar Keita, on Twitter, said the Malian people were "united against terrible acts", without giving any corpse count.

Once a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa, Mali in recent years has been dogged by a coup, civil war and Islamist terrorism.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Gunmen attacked and briefly seized a Malian army base overnight, killing at least 16 soldiers and destroying five vehicles in central Mali's Mopti region, two local councilors in the area where the attack happened said on Sunday.

The base is in the village of Dioura, the mayor of the nearest town Kareri, Youssouf Coulibaly, told Rooters from inside it. Central Mali has in the past few years been overrun by jihadists with links to al Qaeda.

Policeman killed in gunmen attack on Sabha patrol in southern Libya
[Libya Observer] The Libyan Interior Ministry condemned Saturday the armed attack on a patrol for the security department in Sabha, southern Libya, killing one policeman.

The ministry added that one of the attackers was injured and is receiving medical treatment in Sabha Medical Center, saying two others were detained.

Sabha security department announced the attack on the patrol at Khamsa October roundabout on Friday.

"While on duty checking papers of drivers at the roundabout, a group of outlaws opened fire on the patrol." The media office of the department said, adding that one attacker is receiving treatment and the rest are being searched for.

A massive security vacuum is sweeping through Sabha and the rest of southern Libya after Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
's self-styled army force has left after a brief control on the region.

Mayor of Sabha Hamid al-Khayali blamed last week the security deterioration on Haftar's general command as they are not handling the violations on "fake checkpoints" which are robbing people under the forces' sight.

forces' button men handed over a pro-Haftar fighter named Mohammed al-Kashik to the mobile force.

Al-Kashik later denied the news of his detention on his Facebook page and then calm descended on the area.

Al-Kashik is pro-Haftar fighter who was involved in 2014 fighting in Tripoli. He then escaped to Zintan but is currently working at the general security apparatus headed by Emad al-Tarabulsi, who was pro-Haftar but later joined the Presidential Council and was tasked in security posts in western Tripoli.

No official statements have been made yet about the fighting.

Iranians arrested in Buenos Aires with poorly forged Israeli passports
[IsraelTimes] Authorities in Argentina
...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita...
said to raise alert level after catching pair traveling on documents riddled with Hebrew mistakes, note proximity to embassy bombing anniversary.

Authorities in Buenos Aires have locked away
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
two Iranians suspected of traveling on fake Israeli passports, according to local Argentinean media.

Police are treating the two, a man and woman, as possible terror suspects, and have raised the alertness level, daily Clarin reported.

The couple, named as Sajjad Naserani, 27, and Mahsoreh Sabzali, 30, were arrested last week after they entered Argentina on the apparently fake passports.

The passports listed their names as Netanel and Rivka Toledano. The passport ID numbers actually belonged to a French-Israeli couple named as David and Brigitte Assouline, according to Argentinean media.

Authorities initially suspected the passports had been stolen and doctored, but later concluded they were fake after finding several spelling mistakes in Hebrew. One picture of the passports carried in Argentinian media shows the word "Israel" misspelled, among many other flubs.

The couple had flown from Spain to Buenos Aires last week and were allowed into the country before being arrested at a hotel days later. The investigation involved branches of Interpol in Argentina, Spain and Israel, according to Clarin.

Naserani, who claimed to be a photographer, was arrested with a camera. The two said that they had made their way to Spain via The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
and Greece, La Nacion reported.

Officials said they had raised the alert level because of the proximity to the anniversary of the March 17, 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, Clarin reported.

"This of course raises the level of alertness, and so I understand it is essential to maximize all security and prevention measures," prosecuting judge Luis Rodriguez said, according to the news site.

Iran and its Hezbollah proxy have been widely blamed for both the embassy bombing, which killed 29 people, and an attack on the AMIA Jewish center two years later that left 85 dead.

There was no immediate comment from Iranian officials.

One person believed to have been killed in shooting on a tram in Utrecht: police
[DutchNews] One person is believed to have been killed and several others have been injured in a shooting incident on a tram in Utrecht, on Monday morning.

The incident happened at around 10.45 on a tram at the 24 Oktoberplein, a busy transport hub close to the city’s main railway station, which has been sealed off. Tram services have also been halted.

The counter-terrorism service NCTV raised the terror threat level in Utrecht to 5 – the highest level – for the first time since it was introduced. ‘The perpetrator is still on the run. A terrorist motive has not been ruled out,’ said the head of the service, Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg.

Police have not confirmed how many people had been injured in the incident, but three people were reported to have been taken away in ambulances. Local media said one person had been killed, based on images of a body covered by a white sheet beside the tram.

Police spokesman Bernhard Jens told NOS that the suspected gunman may have fled the scene in a red Renault Clio. He said: ‘We trying to get an overview of what’s gone on, offering support to victims and of course we’re looking to catch the person responsible for this as quickly as possible.’

No arrests have been made so far. Security has been stepped up at Schiphol airport and other transport hubs. Children at nearby schools have been told to stay indoors.

One eyewitness is quoted as saying by website Nu.nl that ‘a man just started shooting around him.’ Another told the NRC that the shooter appeared to target people sitting in the seats. ‘The conductor could not open the doors straight away but two lads next to me smashed the window so I could get out.’
Update at 12:40 p.m. EDT: the miscreant’s photo can be seen here.

Palestinian teenager caught with knife at Tomb of the Patriarchs
Suicidal, escape an impossible situation, wanted to make some money for her family, actually hoped to kill for the glory of Allah? So many reasons, but almost always they’re picked up before they accomplish anything serious.
[IsraelTimes] Security forces detained a Paleostinian teenage girl who tried to sneak a knife into the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the West Bank city of Hebron on Sunday, police said.

Border Police officers became suspicious of the teenager as she approached a security stand close to the religious site.

A search uncovered the knife, and when the officers instructed her to follow their orders, she began brandishing the weapon at them, according to police.

Officers overpowered the suspect without using weapons and detained her for questioning.

The incident came after earlier Sunday an IDF soldier was killed, another was maimed, and a civilian critically hurt in a stabbing and shooting attack near the settlement of Ariel in the northern West Bank.

The Tomb of the Patriarchs is sanctified by Jews and Moslems as the burial place of the biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca and Leah. In recent years, there have been numerous incidents of Paleostinians trying to smuggling knives into the complex, as well as stabbing attacks on Israelis.

Manhunt Underway After Two Shooting Attacks In West Bank, Settlers Throw Stones at Palestinians
[Jpost] A manhunt is underway in the West Bank for a Paleostinian who killed an IDF soldier and critically injured two other Israelis in two attacks outside the West Bank settlement of Ariel on Sunday morning.

Additional troops, including special forces and officers from the Shin Bet and Israel police, were deployed to search for the attacker who fled in the direction of the Paleostinian village of Burqin.

Authorities also briefly ordered the gate to the nearby Barkan industrial zone to be closed as well nearby Israeli communities to shut their entrances. The IDF also sealed off the entrances and exits to three local Paleostinian villages, Jamma’in, Kifl Haris and Deir Istiya near Nablus, in an effort to find the perpetrator.

According to IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Ronen Manelis, at around 9:45 a.m., a Paleostinian terrorist stabbed 19 year-old Sgt. Gal Keidan at the Ariel junction and stole his weapon and shot him before he shot toward civilians at the junction, hitting three cars passing through.

An Israeli civilian, 47 year-old Rabbi Ahiad Ettinger from the settlement of Eli was critically injured after he was struck by bullets while driving through the junction. Ettinger, has 12 children and heads Oz and Emunah Yeshiva in south Tel Aviv.

Keidan, from Beersheba was a combat soldier in the Artillery Corps’ 334th "Fire" brigade and who was posthumously promoted to the rank of St.-Sargent. The youngest of three siblings born to parents who immigrated to Israel in the 1970s from the former Soviet Union, he will be buried Monday at 11 AM in the military cemetery in Beersheba.

According to the military, after carrying out the attack in Ariel the attacker stole a car from a civilian who fled the attack and escaped the scene. The terrorist then drove toward the Gitai Avishar junction, where he carried out a drive-by shooting injuring another soldier who was guarding a hitchhiking station.

The injured were evacuated to Beilinson Hospital for medical treatment, with one at death's door with a head injury and the other in a very serious condition with a stomach injury.

"I happened to be passing by the Ariel junction with the car I use to teach driving lessons, when I happened upon the large amount commotion at the Ariel junction," MDA EMT Hananel Hess said. "I saw soldiers running and heard gunshots. I understood that this was out of the ordinary and I requested that MDA teams respond. Once the shooting stopped, I exited my vehicle and I saw an approximately 20-year-old patient lying unconscious on the ground with gunshot wounds to his upper body. We assessed him and found him to be at death's door."

According to Hebrew media reports, while there were four soldiers on duty at the Ariel Junction when the attacks began, none of them -including the soldier who had been standing next to Kaidan- opened fire on the assailant.

The commander of the force, who was stationed nearby with two other soldiers, opened fire on the Paleostinian and reportedly injured him in the shoulder.

The Gitai Avishar junction on Highway 5 is a central intersection of the highway which links Ariel to central Israel, with hundreds of Paleostinian workers traveling through it daily.

Both Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
(PIJ) terror groups welcomed the attacks, but did not claim responsibility.

The attack in Ariel was a "response to the crimes of the Israeli occupation, and to the events in Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque," Hamas said in a statement, adding that "all the acts of oppression and attempts to undermine the resistance will not succeed in defeating the will of our people or preventing them from following the path of jihad."

PIJ said that the attack "was carried out in order to move the compass and bring the struggle to its natural location. We welcome the attack and salute the rebel heroes in the West Bank."

Israelis in West Bank said to throw stones at Palestinians after terror attack

[IsraelTimes] After an IDF soldier was killed Sunday morning in a West Bank attack, and two other Israelis were critically hurt, Israelis in several West Bank locations threw stones at Paleostinian vehicles and homes, causing damage and some injuries, the Yesh Din rights group said later in the day.

In the hours after the fatal attack, there were several incidents of Israelis attacking Paleostinians in the northern West Bank, Yesh Din said in a statement.

"Acts of vengeance following the attack this morning may lead to the loss of additional lives, and harm innocent people whose only ’crime’ is that they are Paleostinians," the statement said.

Three workers in the Paleostinian electric company required treatment for their injuries after their car was hit by rocks near the Shavei Shomoron settlement. They were taken to a hospital in Nablus, the statement said.

On Route 55, in the northeastern West Bank, Israelis threw rocks at cars in the entrance to the Paleostinian village of Jinsafut, breaking the windshields of some of the vehicles.

Israelis threw rocks at homes in the towns of Hawara and Asira al-Qibliya, the rights group said. Rocks were also thrown at Paleostinians near the village of Jit.

Mine Blasts Kill at Least 17 People in Syria
[AnNahar] Landmines left behind by jihadists have killed at least 17 people in Syria in a 24-hour period at the weekend, a war monitor said on Sunday.

group went kaboom! in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor on Saturday, killing 16 people and wounding 32 others, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

A separate landmine kaboom in the northern province of Aleppo on Sunday killed one person, the Observatory said.

The jihadist group often plants mines to slow opponents.

De-mining former IS strongholds continues to be a major challenge in areas liberated from the jihadist group.

Last month, more than 20 non-combatants were killed in Hama province in central Syria when a landmine left behind by IS went kaboom! under a van.

At least 44 people have been killed in landmine kabooms across Syria in the past three weeks, the Observatory said.

#2  There is a tradition of underground cities in the Middle East...

The Derinkuyu underground city (Cappadocian Greek: Μαλακοπή) is an ancient multi-level underground city in the Derinkuyu district in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. Extending to a depth of approximately 60 metres (200 ft), it is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores. It is the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is one of several underground complexes found across Cappadocia.

And that was dug by hand with bronze tools.

SDF: Estimated 5,000 ISIS fighters and their families remain in Baghouz, intense clashes, 7 turbans airstruck
[Rudaw] The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Sunday that according to intelligence gathered from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS) members and civilians who have fled and surrendered, "approximately 5,000 fighters and their family members" remain in al-Baghouz.

"Our forces have won great victories against terrorist ISIS organization. The fighting is now confined to a small area in al-Baghouz town in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor," SDF front man Kino Gabriel told news hounds during a presser near the town.

He detailed that "turbans and their families who surrendered to our forces [is] 29,600." Additionally, "the number of turbans tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in special operations by our forces [is] 520."

The SDF began its final phase of Jazira Storm on January 9.

After our forces had evacuated thousands of civilians who had been used as "human shields" by terrorists, the terrorist organization had been besieged in the town.

Gabriel explained that 37,000 civilians have been evacuated.

"Under the blows of our forces and in support of the international coalition to provide air support; a large part of the elements of the organization and their families forced to surrender to our forces, while hundreds of them were killed and others maimed," Gabriel said.

He claimed the SDF has killed "1,306 turbans in addition to a large number of maimed."

While the SDF put their casualties at 11 killed, and 61 injured.

To the west in Deir ez-Zor governorate near the town of al-Huraibisha, a landmine killed 16 people and injured at least 30 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The UK-based rights monitor said a car carrying people who were collecting truffles detonated the mine.

SOHR also reported that information on the whereabouts of the Orthodox Syriac Bishop of Aleppo Yohanna Ibrahim was obtained from ISIS members trying to escape through tunnels from Baghouz into Iraq.

Gabriel said during his presser that Iraqi forces in Anbar province discovered three tunnels being used by ISIS. He did not reveal any information about the bishop.

ISIS is being squeezed by the SDF on three axes with their backs to the Euphrates River. The area they control has been described as about 500 square-kilometers.

The SDF continue to receive support, advice, and assistance from the US-led international anti-ISIS coaliton.

The coalition's Operation Roundup began on May 1, 2018, with the aim to clear ISIS from the Middle Euphrates River Valley ‐ the group's last bastion east of the river.
The Times of Israel adds:
SDF spokesman Kino Gabriel says the camp was approximately 250 square kilometers in size — much the same area it was five weeks ago, when the SDF said it was going to finally conclude the battle.

ISIS brides flee Baghouz amid intense clashes with SDF

[ALMASDARNEWS] Footage filmed near Baghouz on Saturday shows wives and children of IS holy warriors fleeing the last IS stronghold in eastern Syria. IS family members fled the eastern Syrian village, after 1,300 fighters reportedly surrendered following intense festivities, according to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The wife of a fallen IS holy warrior, who claimed her name was Saffyia, said that she had come to Syria from Istanbul "five years ago." She said that she followed her husband to Syria, noting, "He came here, then I followed him."

The wife of another killed IS fighter, a Finnish national who identified herself as Manija Kismar, said that she also had come to Syria with her husband and has been in the country for "three years."

According to Kismar, she first came to Idlib from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

U.S.-led airstrikes kill seven Islamic State militants in Syria’s Baghuz

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. bad boyz were potted Sunday in an air raid by the U.S.-led international coalition in eastern Syria, an Iraqi military source said.

Speaking to Baghdad Today news website, the source said that the international coalition jet fighters targeted an underground hideout of Islamic State gunnies in the last jihadists’ enclave in Baghuz near the Iraqi border.

"The air raid left seven IS gunnies killed, including a prominent leader," the source added.

Coupled with U.S.-led Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters have increasingly been attacking several IS positions inside Baghuz.

On Wednesday, the Kurdish-led SDF waged a major assault in the center of Baghuz, local military officials said.

"Now, we are carrying out strikes against IS. Hopefully, we will clear them from this last speck of territory soon," an SDF fighter who did not want to be identified told VOA.

Located on the eastern bank of the Euphrates, Baghuz has been under attack for more than a month, with several hundred IS fighters still resisting SDF advances.

"Geography is a major factor in prolonging this fight and delaying our ultimate victory" in Baghuz, said Mustafa Bali, a spokesperson for SDF.
