C. Africa reaches peace deal with rebels: government
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] The Central African Republic government and 14 gangs struck a deal Saturday to end years of fighting that has killed thousands, the parties and a mediator said.

The deal, the seventh since 2012, was announced on Twitter by the government of President Faustin-Archange Touadera just a day after the African Union

and UN-sponsored talks in Khartoum were suspended amid disagreements over amnesty.

"A peace agreement has been reached," said the tweet.

"This agreement should be initialled tomorrow (Sunday) and its signing will take place in Bangui in a few days," the Tweet added.

Also on Twitter, African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui confirmed the breakthrough, adding some details of the pact still had to be ironed out.

"I am humbled to announce that with the exemplary cooperation I received from both the Government of the CAR and the 14 gangs, we have secured a peace agreement today in the interest of the people of CAR."

Aboubakar Sidik, front man for one of the main armed factions, the Popular Front for the Rebirth of Central African Republic (FPRC) said: "We are happy a consensus has been reached on sticking points which were an amnesty (for militia fighters) and an inclusive government."

The talks, which started on January 24, were suspended repeatedly over several issues including rebel demands for an amnesty.

The gangs also wanted the dissolution of the present government in favour of an interim regime led by someone from their side, according to a document obtained by AFP.

violations in UN reports.

A Special Criminal Court (CPS) has been set up in Bangui to judge people accused of crimes in the country since 2003, but has so far done little.

And despite the peace initiative, the violence has continued.

Since the talks started, the mainly Moslem Union for Peace (UPC) has notably carried out several attacks on the central prefecture of Ouaka.

None of the six earlier accords struck between the parties have managed to restore stability.

The former French colony has more than 12,000 UN peacekeepers (MINUSCA) in the country.

But rights group Amnesia Amnesty International has criticised their failure to stop a rebel attack that killed scores of civilians at a displacement camp in the central town of Alindao last November.

rebels.

In response, Christians, who account for about 80 percent of the population, organised vigilante units dubbed "anti-Balaka" in reference to the balaka machetes used by Seleka rebels.

Thousands of people have died in the violence, 700,000 have been internally displaced, and another 570,000 have fled abroad.

Palestinian with knife nabbed among Hebron tourists
[IsraelTimes] Armed suspect tries to enter Tomb of the Patriarchs shrine, is separated by police from group of visitors.

A young Paleostinian man trying to gain access to a West Bank holy site on Sunday aroused the attention of police when they spotted him in the middle of a group of tourists entering the Tomb of the Patriarchs, police said.

Border Police officers tossed in the calaboose
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
the suspect, a man in his twenties, after noticing he didn’t belong with the group and was acting suspiciously in an apparent bid to gain entry to the site, in the West Bank city of Hebron, police said.

The cave is revered by both Jews and Moslems as the biblical burial place of the Jewish patriarchs and matriarchs.

Police officers called him aside for a more thorough inspection before realizing he was carrying the blade.

"When the suspicion grew stronger, the soldiers aimed their weapons and at that point the suspect drew the knife that had been concealed in his clothes, threw it to the ground and raised his hands," a police statement said.

Police said the suspect, a resident of Hebron, admitted during his initial questioning that he intended to carry out a stabbing attack.

In the divided city of Hebron, Paleostinians live in close proximity to settlers who are guarded by Israeli troops, and the city has been the scene of numerous stabbings and attempted stabbings in recent years. In October, a Paleostinian was rubbed out while attempting to stab an Israeli soldier at the Cave of the Patriarchs.

The city is also an ideological battleground between Fatah and Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,, with the two vying for the hearts and minds of the Paleostinian population.

Last week Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel would not extend the mandate of an international observer group in Hebron, following a number of incidents over the past year in which its members scrapped with settlers in the flashpoint West Bank city.

5 Palestinians enter Israel from Gaza with knives, are arrested
[IsraelTimes] Army says suspects picked up shortly after crossing security fence around southern Strip, handed over to Shin Bet for questioning.

The military placed in durance vile
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
five Paleostinians who crossed into Israel from the southern Gazoo Strip on Sunday morning, the army said.

The suspects were arrested as they approached the security fence surrounding the coastal enclave, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Initially, the military said the men were not found to be in possession of weapons. But upon further searches in the field, the suspects were later found to have been armed with a number of knives and a pair of wire cutters, the army said.

"The suspects did not damage the security fence," the army said.

The five were handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning.

In the West Bank, Israeli security forces arrested nine Paleostinian suspects over the weekend, the army said. The suspects were believed to be involved in terrorist activities, riots and low-level attacks like rock throwing, the IDF said. They too were handed over to the Shin Bet for questioning.

Residents of the Gazoo Strip have been known to seek to flee the Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,-controlled beleaguered enclave by crossing into Israeli territory. In some cases, they bring along knives and other weapons with the intention of being caught by the IDF and sent to prison, preferring incarceration in Israel to life in Gazoo.

In such cases, the Israeli military generally returns the Paleostinians to the Gazoo Strip.

The relatively large-scale breach of the Gazoo border fence on Sunday came amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hamas.

In recent days, Israel reportedly warned Hamas that it would launch a military campaign unless violence along the Gazoo border ends, irrespective of the upcoming April 9 election.

The message to the terror group was sent via mediators, including Egypt, Channel 12 (previously Hadashot) news reported Saturday night.

"Israel can make tough decisions during elections and is not afraid of a military campaign," Israel said in the message sent on Thursday.

Earlier on Saturday, Egypt reportedly agreed to permanently reopen its border crossing with the Gazoo Strip if Hamas restrains festivities with Israeli troops.

Lebanese TV airs footage of Gaza sniper shooting IDF officer in helmet
The brief video can be seen at the link.
[IsraelTimes] A Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese news outlet on Sunday broadcast previously unaired footage of the moment a Paleostinian sniper in the Gazoo Strip shot an Israeli officer in the helmet last month, causing him light injuries.

On January 22, a gunman from the Iran-backed Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group fired at the Paratroopers Brigade company commander during a riot along the southern Gazoo border. The bullet struck the officer’s helmet, which saved his life.

In the video, aired by al-Mayadeen, the officer can be seen firing his rifle from a berm across from the Gazoo border. A moment later, a gunshot is heard, and the sniper’s bullet is seen striking the serviceman’s helmet, sending up a cloud of smoke and debris. He then grabs his head and takes cover.

Speaking to the pro-Hezbollah news outlet, a spokesperson for the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad confirmed suspicions that the terror group’s military wing Saraya al-Quds was behind the attack.

Daoud Shehab told al-Mayadeen on Sunday that the terror group’s attack was "inevitable" after the officer shot at the rioters "because our blood is not cheap."

He said the goal of the video is to uncover some of Israel’s daily violations of Paleostinians "most basic human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
" and of "understandings" reached between Jerusalem and the Strip’s terror groups regarding a ceasefire agreement.

Shehab said there is "a consensus among the Paleostinian factions in responding to any Israeli aggression."

The injured officer was taken to Beerhsheba’s Soroka Medical Center for treatment. A cut on his head was bandaged, and he was released hours later, the hospital said.

Syrian Army troops block Turkish forces around Manbij
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) troops in the Manbij countryside have positioned themselves around the western and northern flanks of the city in a bid to block the Ottoman Turkish forces, a field source in Aleppo city told al-Masdar News.

According to the source, the Syrian Arab Army has been conducting daily patrols from al-Arimeh (western Manbij) to the town of Dadat (northern Manbij).

He would add that the Syrian Arab Army has no intention to enter Manbij as the city itself is currently protected by locals from the Manbij Military Council of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Despite some early reports in December claiming they entered Manbij, the Syrian Arab Army has yet to enter the city.

The primary purpose of the Syrian Arab Army’s presence around Manbij is to prevent the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels from taking the city.

Ouch.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) eliminated an entire Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) that was trying to make their way to the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor on Saturday.

According to reports, the Syrian Arab Army caught a group of ISIS fighters traveling through the Wadi Suheil area in the al-Sukhnah countryside this morning.

The Syrian Arab Army quickly confronted the group and managed to kill and wound all of the Islamic State fighters before they could slip back into the Syrian Desert.

A source from the Syrian military told al-Masdar News that these Islamic State fighters were likely going to try and aid their comrades that are currently fighting along the Syrian-Iraqi border.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a heavy attack across the southern countryside of the Idlib Governorate this afternoon, targeting several areas controlled by both the jihadist and Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels.

Led by their artillery teams, the Syrian Arab Army heavily targeted Jaish al-Izza and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
gunnies as far north as the strategic Jabal al-Zawiya region in western Idlib.

According to a military report, the Syrian Arab Army scored several direct hits on Hay’at Tahrir All-Sham’s positions in Jabal al-Zawiya; this resulted in a number of casualties for the jihadist group.

Furthermore, the Syrian Arab Army also heavily targeted the northern countryside of the Hama Governorate.

The report said that the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Division fired several artillery shells and surface-to-surface missiles towards Jaish al-Izza’s positions near the key town of al-Latamnah.
