US rules out parallel elections in Somalia amid deepening gridlock
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia will have to hold elections across the country, the US has said, ruling out plans by the Federal Government to hold elections in sections of the country, an idea which the opposition has repeatedly opposed in recent months.

On Sunday, the US team in Somalia held a closed-door meeting with former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, Hussein Guled, and Abdinasir Mohamed, all of who are now in opposition, where timely elections in the country featured. The three have been pushing for dialogue between the Federal Government and the opposition.

In a tweet, the US called for the involved parties to strike a compromise for the sake of timely elections in the country. Somalia is yet to start parliamentary elections despite an agreement that was released in September last year, which tentatively scheduled polls for December last year.

The government had expressed interest in holding elections in Southwest, Hirshabelle, and Galmadug states where it's in firm control and ignore Puntland and Jubaland.
Where the government is getting its hind end kicked...
However, opposition leaders threatened dire revenge™ warned against the process, arguing that it would divide the country further.

The UN had also expressed hope that Somalia is on the right track to recovery from years of violence and terrorism, adding that the main priority now is to push for peace and stability despite the prevailing circumstances, including but not limited to sharp divisions over the next polls.

"Putting the good of the country first is what is needed at this time to ensure Somalia remains on a clear path to peace and stability," the UN had said in a statement which was signed by James Swan.

Back, and better: Returning to Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid
Hearts and minds, Egyptian style, on the troubled border with Gaza.
[AlAhram] Life return to normal in North Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid two years after the launch of Comprehensive Operation Sinai (COS) 2018, the largest ever campaign to eradicate terrorism from the peninsula.

"Everything is so much easier now," Sheikh Abdallah A-Ruweishan told us as we passed through the streets of Sheikh Zuweid. "Life is not just returning to normal, it’s going to be better than it was. We passed through very hard times when security collapsed in 2011. Life came to a halt."

Two years have passed since al-Ahram Weekly’s first visit to the area following the launch of Comprehensive Operation Sinai (COS) 2018, the largest ever campaign to eradicate terrorism from the peninsula.

Egypt's official gazette publishes verdict placing Muslim Brotherhood on terror list for five more years
[AlAhram] The court also put the group's acting Supreme Guide Mahmoud Ezzat and former presidential candidate and ex-Brotherhood member Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh on the list

Egypt's official gazette published on Sunday a ruling by a Cairo court placing the Moslem Brüderbund on the list of terrorist entities for a five-year period, as well as placing the group's acting Supreme Guide Mahmoud Ezzat on the terrorist lists for the same timeframe.

On 12 January, a Southern Cairo criminal court placed the banned group on the terrorist list for five years, starting the date of decision.
They need a time limit? They're expecting the MB to reform?
It could happen — five years from now the horse might learn to sing.
The court also put 16 names on the terror list for five years, including Mahmoud Ezzat, who was arrested in August 2020, and former presidential candidate and ex-Brotherhood member Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh, who was arrested in February 2018.

The court said the decision was issued as per law no.8/2015, known as the law regulating lists of terrorist entities and terrorists.

Under the law, any person placed on the terror list is subject to a travel ban and having their assets frozen.

The group has repeatedly been put on the terror list after the Egyptian government banned it in 2013 and declared it a terrorist group in 2013.

...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
's Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...

State Department Cuts Ties With Islamic Charity Over Anti-Semitism
January 18, 2020
[FreeBeacon] The State Department has cut ties with Islamic Relief Worldwide,
..the “charity” arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Britain, it’s one of the largest Islamic charities in the world with branches in 40 countries. IRW has received millions of pounds from the British government’s Department for International Development and six-figure sums from America, while Israel and the UAE have banned it for forwarding funds to Hamas. The entire board resigned when it came out they‘d replaced one Jew hater with another even worse...
an international charity that the United States accuses of spreading anti-Semitism. The public accusations represent a wholesale shift in how the United States approaches a global charity that was, until recently, an official partner of the American government and raked in hundreds of thousands in taxpayer dollars.

The State Department is "conducting a full review of the organization and U.S. government funding" due to the "anti-Semitism exhibited repeatedly by IRW’s leadership," Ellie Cohanim, the deputy special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism, told the Washington Free Beacon.

New 2021 rankings for the strongest military forces in the Middle East
[AlMasdar] The annual rankings of military strength of the countries of the world, issued by the Global Fire Power website, were released recently, along with the regional rankings.

In the Middle East region, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
was considered the strongest military, followed by Egypt at number two and Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
at number three.

Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
ranked fourth in the military power in the Middle East, followed by Israel in fifth place,
...not where I’d have ranked them relative to the competition, but I am not a secret algorithm...
the Emirates sixth, Iraq in seventh place, Syria in eighth, Kuwait ranked ninth, while Oman ranked tenth, and then Jordan ranked eleventh.

The bottom of the list consisted of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, Bahrain, and Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
The Global Fire Power rankings included Egypt in the category of the Middle East, but left out the Arab states of Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and Algeria, which are located in the same North Africa region.

Saudi Arabia topped the list with respect to the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the UAE ranked second, Kuwait third, Oman ranked fourth, then Qatar and Bahrain.

It is noteworthy to mention that the classification of the Global Fire Power Foundation is based on an index based on 50 factors, including the military, financial, logistical and geographical capabilities of 138 countries.

#1  Is this some heavylifting competition? Because if judging effectiveness I think the order is a bit screwy if Israel isn't on top. A military is more than hardware and the myth built around mossad and what that does to Arab morale alone puts them far above everyone else.

#2  Al Masdar is Hezbollah’s news outlet in Syria, as I recall. They’re happy to get propaganda points for Iran’s third place ranking, above enemies Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Very probably the size of the country’s armed forces weighs more heavily than ability to significantly reduce the enemy’s war fighting ability in the secret algorithm.

Russia will not fight US in Syria, warns against attacking Syrian Army
January 18, 2020
[AlMasdar] Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that Russia will not engage in festivities with the United States in Syria, stressing that Moscow calls on the American side not to use force against sites belonging to the Syrian authorities.

"We have contacts with the United States through military channels, not because we recognize the legitimacy of their presence there [in Syria] but simply because it has to act in a certain framework," Lavrov said.

"We cannot expel them from there, we will not engage in armed festivities with them of course, but because they are there. We are conducting a dialogue with them about the so-called non-conflict ... Among other things, we strongly demand that force not be used against the sites of the Syrian state," he added.

The Syrian state maintains the US presence inside the country is illegal and demands their immediate withdrawal from all occupied areas.

In addition to their demands on the immediate withdrawal from all territories of the Arab Republic, Syria has called on Washington to end its sanctions against the state.

Under the presidency of Donald Trump
...His ancestors didn't own any slaves...
, the US has increased its pressure on the Syrian government by imposing heavy sanctions against Damascus, along with threatening all those who do business with them.
