Kops rescue 33 kids in Cali
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – A multi-agency investigation in Southern California led to the recovery of 33 children who had been missing, including eight who were sexually exploited, the FBI announced Friday.

Two of the children were rescued multiple times during Operation “Lost Angels.” They were apparently on the “track,” a term used to describe a known location for sex trafficking, officials explained.

The investigation began on Jan. 11, during Human Trafficking Awareness Month. More than two dozen agencies participated, including the Los Angeles police and sheriff’s departments, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the California Department of Child and Family Services and nongovernmental victim advocacy organizations.

U.S. Marshals find 39 endangered or missing children during operation in Georgia
“Several other victims located had been sexually exploited in the past and were considered vulnerable missing children prior to their recovery,” the FBI said in a news release.

One suspected human trafficker was arrested on state charges. In addition, some of the minors were arrested on suspicion of probation violations, robbery and other misdemeanors, and one child was the victim of a noncustodial parental kidnapping, officials said.

Authorities did not elaborate on where the victims were located, nor did they provide any additional information on the suspect.

Officials say the caseload for sex and labor trafficking-related crimes has “increased significantly” in the last several years.

Last year, the FBI initiated 665 human trafficking investigations across the country, resulting in the arrests of 473 people, officials said. And as of November, there were more than 1,800 pending trafficking investigations, including those involving minors exploited through commercial sex trafficking.

The FBI leads 86 child exploitation and human trafficking task forces in the U.S., and participates in anti-trafficking coordination teams in 12 offices, including in Los Angeles.

“Human trafficking is a pervasive and insidious crime that threatens the safety of our young people, who are the future of our communities,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a statement. “We can only begin to take back the future of our youth with the strong partnerships forged between outstanding service providers and law enforcement.”

The FBI will work to ensure the victims are provided with any resources they may need, including medical requirements, legal services, housing, employment, education, job training and child care, officials said.

Afghanistan
President’s Senior Adviser Dub Taliban Prisoners Release ‘Bitter Experience’
[KhaamaPress] A senior adviser to the president on public and strategic affairs, Waheed Omar said on Wednesday, that the Afghan government will not release further Taliban
...Arabic for students...
prisoners, adding that the previous release process for the continuation of the grinding of the peace processor resulted in the escalation of violence.

The release of Taliban prisoners in the past has been a ’bitter experience’ for the Afghan government, which says it is not ready to release any more prisoners.

He added, the people of Afghanistan decided that 400 high-value and most dangerous Taliban prisoners should also be released for peace and the people demanded upon the release of these dangerous detainees both sides must call for a prolonged ceasefire and put an end to war, "Unfortunately, the Taliban have not only stopped the fighting and were not committed to the ceasefire, but they have raged their violence and are taking the lives of innocent Afghans every single day".

"We are not in favor of releasing more Taliban prisoners," Omar said.

This comes as the Taliban demanded the release of more than 7,000 prisoners, the group’s removal from the UN blacklist.

It was intended that the release of 5,000 Taliban will bring a reduction in violence, but according to Omar "violence has increased" because of the group’s members released as part of the grinding of the peace processor.

"we hope that the new US administration will work in coordination with the Afghan government on peace," Omar concluded his speech.

Taliban Warns Govt Against Execution of its Jailed Members
[ToloNews] The Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
in a statement on Thursday warned the Afghan government of severe response if any of its members cutting jails are executed. The group said that grinding of the peace processor and execution cant move together.

A Taliban front man has claimed that all those 5,000 Taliban prisoners who were released recently from the Afghan government jails as part of the US-Taliban peace agreement had been sentenced to death by the Afghan courts, warning that any mistreatment of the remaining prisoners will pose serious harms to the grinding of the peace processor.

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
l officials of Directorate of Prisons have said that over 1,000 prisoners have been sentenced to death by the courts in Afghanistan.

The Directorate of Prisons however refrained to give an exact figure about the political prisoners.

This comes few days after Afghanistan’s First Vice President Amrullah Saleh called on the Afghan legal and judicial system to order the death penalties for the arrested Taliban members to help improve the security situations.

But, a Taliban front man has told TOLOnews that all those 5,000 Taliban members recently released by the government were sentenced to death and now there are no Taliban members on death row.

"The Taliban’s killing machine was not stopped despite the release of over 5,000 prisoners from the jails on goodwill gestures, the call for execution of these prisoners is a legitimate call," said Mohammad Baqir Kazimi, member of Saleh’s office.

"The executive body is not supposed to be the decision maker, this is the responsibility of the legal system, they have their own calculations about the crimes committed and about the punishments," said Mirza Mohammad Yarmand, a military analyst.

"We should do something which is in the favor of the people and the country," said MP Parwiz Arabzada.

But the Office of the First Vice President has said that the execution of Taliban-affiliated prisoners who have pleaded guilty is the wish of the families of the victims of the violent mostly peaceful incidents that were caused in the Taliban attacks.

This comes a day after Waheed Omar, President Ghani's senior adviser for public and strategic affairs said that the Afghan government will not release more Taliban prisoners, and said that previous releases has resulted in more violence.

"We are not in favor of releasing more Taliban prisoners," Omar said.

This comes as the Taliban has demanded the release of 7,000 more prisoners, the removal of the group's members from the UN blacklist, and the formation of an Islamic system in order to continue the peace talks, according to peace talks.

The release of over 5,000 Taliban prisoners before was intended to reduce violence as the part of the grinding of the peace processor, Omar said, but "violence has increased because of it."

In the meantime, Republic negotiator Abdul Hafiz Mansoor on Monday said that the negotiating team has decided that the legitimacy of the war must be discussed with the Taliban before any progress can be made.

He said the talks will not have an outcome until this issue is clarified.

On Sunday, the chief negotiators from the Afghan republic and the Taliban met; however, the working groups from both sides failed to meet on Monday to finalize the agenda for the talks.

The US-Taliban deal signed on February 29 last year raised hopes among Afghans for a reduction in violence but the Taliban, in defiance of the international community, continued their attacks against the Afghan government forces.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
so far, there has been no major progress between the Republic negotiating team and Taliban.

Over the past few months, Afghanistan has also grappled with a spate of assassinations on civil society members and the journalists.

The Afghan government has blamed the Taliban for the attacks.

But the Taliban has denied involvement.

No Significant Progress in Doha Talks in Past 9 Days
[ToloNews] No significant progress has been made over the past nine days between the peace negotiators from the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
about the agenda of the talks.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Yellow Wolf clutched at his chest and fell from his horse...
a member of the republic peace negotiating team has accused the Taliban of not being prepared for the talks.

The republic team has said that the reasons for the Taliban’s lack of interest in the talks are unclear.

Nevertheless, a number of Afghan politicians and Afghan citizens have decried the slow pace of the peace talks.

They said that there is a direct link between the rising violence and the slow pace of the talks.

Political leaders have warned that such a trend in the talks could jeopardize public trust in the talks.

The second round of talks between the two sides started on January 5.

"Whenever the opposition (Taliban) shows a readiness to discuss their agenda—our expectation is that the talks will get underway as soon as possible," said Sharifa Zurmati Wardak, a member of the republic’s team.

Some Afghan politicians have said that it looks as if the peace negotiators have been isolated after the 23-day break and they are waiting for decisions to be made in Kabul, Washington and Islamabad.

"If the Taliban insisted on their own unilateral way, or if the US tried to implement something in support of its own interest, such moves would not be acceptable to the Afghan govt and the Afghan resistance and jihadi front," said Atta Mohammad Noor, the former governor of Balkh province.

"Each day, the people are being killed, each day, the people are being displaced from their homes, how long should this prevail," asked Mohammad Zamir, a resident in Kabul.

"Both sides are engaged in rivalries to score points, the other side also takes advantage of this process," said Ahmad Wali Massoud, the head of the Massoud Foundation.

"After the start of the negotiations, the fighting did not reduce; instead it increased. No one is there to think about the people," said Jaffar Ezatkhawh, a resident in Kabul.

While the republic team accuses the Taliban of not finalizing its agenda for the talks, the Taliban so far has not made an official comment about the allegation.

Shaboobs gaining control over territory in Middle Shabelle
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia-based Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militants on Thursday seized several villages in Middle Shabelle, a region that
...is somewhere between Upper and Lower Shabelle...
has struggled to defuse the threat in as many years, marking the biggest victory for the militants who are keen to control the country.

For many months, security forces have been trying to consolidate the entire region which is said to be under Al-Shabaab, and the efforts have led to significant gains such as the liberation of key towns and the killing of notorious group leaders.
Perhaps that's not working as well as the gummint had hoped...
Reports indicate that the militants captured several villages in the outskirts of Jowhar, the regional administrative capital of Hirshabelle State, which is fighting against Al-Shabaab. The town is located close to 90 kilometers north of Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

Sources intimate that the AU and Somali troops stationed in the vicinity of the town did not fight back, and instead chose to run away flee vamoose beat feet retreat as they also prepare to launch an operation against the militants, who are in charge of large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

Early last week, the terrorists seized Mashallay near Qoryoley town in the Lower Shabelle region and are keen to fight up to Johwar, the town which is highly guarded by the security forces. The Al-Shabaab is keen to overthrow the fragile UN-backed Somalia administration. An official within the Somali military told Garowe Online that the extremist group is now gaining control over large pieces of territory in southern Somalia, taking advantage of the US troops' pull-out.

deal have reportedly been underway in New York for about three weeks, between figures from Biden's administration and Iranian actors, according to a source close to the matter speaking to French newspaper Le Figaro, as reported by Maariv, the sister publication of The Jerusalem Post.
Not possible — private citizens, which they were at that time, are forbidden by law to engage in diplomacy. Several of Trump’s people were prosecuted for doing exactly that four years ago, remember?
Important European players — including La Belle France, Britannia, and Germany — apparently were not aware of the talks.
So much for promises that President Biden will work better with our allies...
"We'll know pretty soon if the efforts [in returning to the deal] have been successful," the source told Le Figaro.

Should the US re-enter the deal, the source explained, few sanctions placed on Iran might be removed, including the ban on selling oil.
Treaties must be consented to by the Senate — that’s why President Obama called it a “deal” the first time around, and never let the Senate see it.

NATO to Address Its Training Mission in Afghanistan, Iraq
[KhaamaPress] Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
in a meeting with Mevlut Cavusoglu, Ottoman Turkish Foreign minister said, that NATO will address the future of its training mission in Afghanistan by February 2021.

Jens Stoltenberg also reiterated that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation will support the Afghan grinding of the peace processor.

He added, that "whatever path we choose, it is important that we do so together, in a coordinated and deliberate way".

The international organization will also support the Afghan grinding of the peace processor and stands ready to adjust its presence in the region.

"NATO supports the Afghan peace talks and, as part of this process, stands ready to further adjust its presence," Jens added.

According to NATO, the agenda is also planned for the expansion of NATO’s Training Mission in Iraq to help ensure ISIS never returns.

Stoltenberg also welcomed the continuation of NATO-brokered talks between The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
and Greece on a military deconfliction mechanism in the Eastern Mediterranean. "The de-confliction mechanism has helped to reduce tensions and create the space for political discussions to resolve the underlying issues. I also welcome the Exploratory Talks taking place in Istanbul next week.", the Secretary-General said.

Previously NATO had declared that their Resolute Support mission will be ongoing in Afghanistan.

to follow up the Afghan grinding of the peace processor.

Aljazeera quoted Qureshi saying "I think they should realise there is an opportunity in Afghanistan and they should persevere with what was initiated and not reverse things", he added in regards to US troops withdrawal that "We are concerned because we feel violence can vitiate the climate,".

"Pakistain has done a lot, we have really bent backwards to create an environment to facilitate the grinding of the peace processor," Aljazeera quoted Qureshi.

The Pak prime minister blamed internal spoilers for the violence escalation.

This comes as violence has intensified and surged in Afghanistan, and many innocent civilians suffer from a lack of insecurity and overall instability.

US suspends program incentivizing Iraqis to work with US military
[Rudaw] The United States on Friday suspended a program that granted Iraqis refuge in the US in exchange for aiding American troops in Iraq, according to a statement from the state department.

"Effective January 22, 2021, the United States is suspending the Direct Access Program for the U.S.-Affiliated Iraqis for 90 days," reads the statement from Daniel B. Smith, the acting secretary of state.

He justified the temporary halt to the program, which incentivized Iraqis to work with the US military, by saying they have identified individuals stealing documents from the state department’s Worldwide Refugee Admissions Processing System "to take advantage" of the program.

This suspension is needed to "further review and address vulnerabilities," he said.

The US has reduced the number of its troops in Iraq to 2,500, according to a statement released by the Department of Defense on January 15.

"We recognize the importance of assisting those who legitimately put their lives at risk to provide critical support to the United States in Iraq and we do not take the decision to suspend this program lightly," Smith added.
