-Lurid Crime Tales-
Book Review: Bloody Williamson: A Chapter in American Lawlessness
This is a horror story of native American violence. It carries a grim lesson for the whole country. Political doctrines have played no part in the violence and murder that have brought much ill fame to one corner of Illinois. On the map, Williamson is just another county. But in history it is a place in which a strange disease has raged for more than eighty years‐a disease marked by a pathological tendency to settle differences by force.
Charlie Birger (seated on the running board in white shirt) was the last person to be publicly hanged in Illinois. Charles "Charlie" Birger, (born Shachna Itzak Birger, February 5, 1881 – April 19, 1928), was an American bootlegger during the Prohibition period in Southern Illinois.
Fascinated by this, Paul M. Angle, the well-known historian, set out to discover what really had happened. Through enormous research he has been able to reconstruct the whole story in all its horrible, scarifying detail. Using the best techniques of reportage, without editorializing, without subjective coloration, he has produced a narrative beyond imagination. It begins with the "Bloody Vendetta," a feud that rampaged in the 1870s. It deals with labor's success in organizing coal mines in southern Illinois, an affair that twice blew up in violence. It covers the Herrin Massacre of 1922‐perhaps the most shocking episode in the history of organized labor in this country‐and the subsequent trials. The Ku Klux Klan provides material for four chapters that come to a climax in a fatal duel between the Klan and its opponents. And it ends with the story of the gang war between Charlie Birger and the Shelton brothers. It is a tale to shake the most phlegmatic reader.
The Chicago bootleggers and hoodlums steered clear of Charlie and the Shelton bros. Those lads used airplanes to conduct reconnaissance and enforce their sales districts.

#1  Harrisburg Register: Berger at the gallows "It's a beautiful day." (April 19, 1928)

While all three men were convicted, only Birger was sentenced to hang. On that April day, the 47-year-old Birger walked from the Franklin County Jail cell that had been his home for the past 10 months to the gallows about 100 feet away. Reports said he stopped to shake hands with some of the crowd of 500 gathered to witness his hanging.

Standing on the scaffold, he said, "I've forgiven everybody," before a black hood -- he refused a white hood as he did not want to be mistaken for a Klansman -- was slipped over his head.

California Loses Two State-Sponsored Residents: a Pair of Child Molesters Get Murdered Behind Bars
[Red State] On Wednesday, California Department of Corrections officials announced a second death from a brutal incident.

As reported by SFGate.com, 41-year-old Jonathan Watson ‐ who’s served 10 years of a life sentence for first degree murder and discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury of death ‐ beat the heads of two of his fellow inmates with a cane last Thursday.

At the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran.

David Bobb, 48, died on the way to the hospital. As for Graham De Luis-Conti, 62, he was pronounced dead Sunday.

According to KMPH, the savagery occurred around 2:30 p.m.

Portrait of the killer; he looks like a happy-go-lucky fella, but I’m guessing he’s not:

#7  There's a guy on YouTube by the name of Wes Watson (no relation to our killer here) that says something to the effect that: In Prison, you have to put in work for your people. If a shot caller tells you to assault or kill someone - you had better damn well do it.

Child Molesters (chomo's) are often beaten and/or killed in prison because the GP doesn't tolerate them.

Watson, in this case, was likely just following orders.

Wes Watson is an impressive speaker - and this situation is one of the scenarios he speaks about to tell folks to avoid going to prison. A simple drug offense of 2 years sentence, can turn into a much longer term if you "put in work" like that.

Man attempts to register beer as his emotional support animal
[FoxNews] A Brooklyn resident reportedly registered an unusual item as an emotional support animal: beer. Unfortunately for him, some sources say that even with certification, the beer-loving man’s plan won’t work.

Floyd Hayes filed the unusual registration with the USA Service Dog Registration website, The New York Post reports. He told the news outlet that he just wants to see if it will work.

Chinese Coronavirus ‘Really Serious Business,' Says Texas Research Physician
[Breitbart] HOUSTON, Texas ‐ A physician tasked with developing a vaccine for the prevention of coronavirus-type illnesses says this latest virus is the third variant since 2002. The doctor expressed concern about the frequency of new coronavirus contagions.

"This is the third new coronavirus since the turn of the century," Dr. Peter Hotez, Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston told Breitbart Texas in a phone interview. "This is serious business."

The doctor referenced the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) discovery in 2002, the MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) discovery in 2012, and the Wuhan coronavirus in 2020.

"It is still very early," Dr. Hotez said in reference to a question about what we know about the Wuhan coronavirus. "What we don’t know is much more than what we do know."

He does not believe the virus will be as deadly as SARS, which had about a 10 percent mortality rate. If the information provided by the Chinese government is correct, the current disclosed mortality rate is currently just under two percent. Early on Wednesday, Chinese officials directly reported nine deaths out of 479 reported cases.

"We will know more in the coming weeks," the doctor continued. "Right now, it appears to be harder to transmit than the previous viruses, the flu, or measles."

"We are now seeing person-to-person spreading of the virus," he added. "We will know more in the coming weeks."

To help prevent the spread of the virus, the doctor suggested prevention methods similar to the common cold or flu. This includes frequent hand washing, covering mouths during a cough or sneeze, and staying away from people who might be infected.

Chinese National Health Commission Vice-Minister Li Bin told reporters in a Wednesday (January 22) press conference regarding the Wuhan coronavirus (also known as 2019-nCo) that there is a "possibility of viral mutation and further spread of the disease," the AFP reported. The news agency reported the number of confirmed cases in China now stands at 440.

At More Than 500%, Zimbabwe's Ncube Sees Inflation Stabilizing
[Bloomberg via Yahoo] Zimbabwean inflation is beginning to stabilize, even with consumer prices increasing more than 500% on an annual basis, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said.

Year-on-year inflation remains high, "but that's expected, that happens when you liberalize a currency," Ncube said Wednesday in an interview with Bloomberg Television at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

After a decade of using a basket of foreign currencies, including the South African rand and the U.S. dollar, Zimbabwe last year reintroduced its own tender. It has plummeted to 17.1950 per dollar since a 1:1 peg was removed in February.

The southern African nation's statistics agency suspended publishing year-on-year inflation data after June, when monthly inflation peaked at 39.3%. It still releases the consumer price index, which shows annual costs rose 521% in December, the most since a hyperinflation episode in 2009. While monthly price growth has cooled, it was still at 16.6% in December, whereas Ncube said in February it could be close to zero by the end of 2019.

Still, investors can believe his government's pledge to rein in inflation because they have "walked the talk," he said.

Britain
Brexit bill clears final UK parliamentary hurdle ahead of Jan. 31 exit
[YNet] - Britain moved a step closer to its Jan. 31 exit from the European Union when the legislation required to ratify its deal with Brussels passed its final stage in parliament on Wednesday.

The bill will officially become law when it receives Royal Assent from Queen Elizabeth, something that could happen as soon as Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the lower house of parliament, the House of Commons overturned changes the upper house, the House of Lords, had made to the legislation, including a clause to ensure protections for child refugees after Brexit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had refused to accept any changes to the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, which will enact Britain's departure from the EU, facing down opposition lawmakers who say he has hardened its terms.

The Lords could have sought to reinstate the changes, but opted not to, allowing the legislation to clear its final hurdle.

Johnson's Conservatives won a large majority in the House of Commons in a general election last month, enabling the government to bring an end to more than three years of wrangling in parliament over Britain's EU exit.

Australia fires: US crew dead in firefighting plane crash
[BBC] An air tanker has crashed in a fireball while fighting bushfires in Australia, killing the three people on board.

Officials lost contact with the C-130 Hercules plane shortly before 13:30 local time (02:30 GMT) on Thursday.

The cause of the crash in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales (NSW) state is not yet known. The victims were American residents.

More than 80 blazes are raging across the state after hot and windy conditions returned.

The plane crashed in an active fire zone two hours south of Australia's capital, Canberra, said the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS).

"The field reports are that the plane came down, it's crashed and there was a large fireball associated with that crash," said Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.

Spain proclaims a climate emergency, creates plan of action
[LA Times] MADRID ‐ Spain’s new government declared a national climate emergency on Tuesday, taking a formal first step toward enacting ambitious measures to fight climate change.

The declaration approved by the Cabinet says the left-of-center Socialist government will send to parliament within 100 days its proposed climate legislation. The targets coincide with those of the European Union, including a reduction of net carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

Spain’s coalition government wants up to 95% of the Mediterranean country’s electricity to come from renewable sources by 2040. The plan also foresees eliminating pollution by buses and trucks and making farming carbon neutral.

Details of the plan are to be made public when the proposed legislation is sent to parliament for approval.

More than two dozen countries and scores of local and regional authorities have declared a climate emergency in recent years.

Scientists say the decade that just ended was by far the hottest ever measured on Earth, capped off by the second-warmest year on record.

Also Tuesday, young climate activists including Greta Thunberg told the elites gathered at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland they were not doing enough to deal with the climate emergency and warned them that time was running out.

#3  Spain has undertaken a series of economic measures with negative results.

about 10 years ago they began to subsidize mega expansions of olive trees and after production went up the price came down and a lot of the govt subsidized loans ended up being uncollectable, Spain now relies heavily on people paying for 'organic' olive oil. This works for now but only until people realize it is basically a scam

Spain also subsidized wind power and solar power and ended up with high electricity prices and ugly wind towers on many of their otherwise picturesque hills.

Immediate measures would be revoking tourist and transit transportation.

Second, the shuttering and seizure of Airbus assets as well as the Spanish Auto Industry, especially Tauro Sport Auto. How dare they make race cars.

Third, cease all business and monetary transactions with countries and organizations which support air and auto construction - that includes the EU.

Go on now, show me.

Protesters who demanded Huawei CFO's release revealed to be paid actors
[The Guardian] Protesters calling for the release of a senior Chinese telecommunications executive arrested in Canada have admitted they were paid actors, in the latest twist in a closely watched extradition case that has chilled relations between Ottawa and Beijing.

More than a dozen people joined a demonstration on Monday outside a Vancouver courtroom where the Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou is fighting extradition to the US for alleged fraud related to sanctions against Iran.

The protesters held handwritten signs that read “Free Meng” and “Trump stop bullying us” – but it soon emerged that they were actors who had been promised C$100 ($76) for two hours’ work on a movie.

In a Facebook post, one of the actors, Julia Hackstaff described the fake protest as a “filthy cheap scam” that has resulted in her receiving hate messages online.

Hackstaff said she had been offered work as a movie extra, but soon after arriving at the court realized she had been duped into attending a real event.

“I feel cheated, used, abused, angry, deeply saddened and emotions that I don’t even have words to describe,” she wrote. It was unclear who had recruited the actors.

A Huawei spokesman told the AP that the company had no involvement with the protest. China’s embassy in Ottawa did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Another protester, Ken Bonson, gave an identical account to the Toronto Star, saying she “had no idea what I was going into”.

“I’m honestly pretty ashamed and embarrassed,” she said, explaining that she had not known about Meng or her legal saga.

The revelations came as Canadian government lawyers returned to court for the third day, to argue that Meng – Huawei’s chief financial officer – should be extradited because she was guilty of fraud – and not because she violated US sanctions against Iran.

Meng’s legal team has argued that she was caught up in a US effort to use its extradition treaty to get Canada to enforce US banking sanctions against Iran.

The US alleges Meng lied to HSBC about Huawei’s relationship with its Iran-based affiliate Skycom, putting the bank at risk of violating US sanctions against Tehran.

“Lying to a bank in order to get banking services that creates a risk of economic prejudice is fraud. Fraud – not sanctions violations – is at the heart of this case,” Canadian prosecutor Robert Frater told the court on Wednesday.

Trump administration to issue new visa restrictions aimed at curbing 'birth tourism'
[FoxNews] The Trump administration is planning to introduce new visa restrictions aimed at restricting “birth tourism,” whereby women travel to the U.S. to give birth so that their children automatically become U.S. citizens, according to officials.

The new rules would make it harder for pregnant women to travel on a tourist visa. In one draft of the regulations, pregnant women would have to convince a consular officer that they have another legitimate reason to come to the U.S. before obtaining the visa.

The State Department planned to publicize the rules Thursday, according to two officials with knowledge of the plans who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

A spokesperson said the rules are "intended to address the national security and law enforcement risks associated with birth tourism, including criminal activity associated with the birth tourism industry.”

Birth tourism is a lucrative business in both the U.S. and abroad. American companies take out advertisements and charge up to $80,000 to facilitate the practice, offering hotel rooms and medical care. Many of the women travel from Russia and China to give birth in the U.S.

President Trump has railed against the practice and threatened to end it, though members of his administration have said ending birthright citizenship -- which is guaranteed under the Constitution -- is not so easy to do.

There are no figures on how many foreign women travel to the U.S. specifically to give birth. The Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates for stricter immigration laws, estimated that in 2012, about 36,000 foreign-born women gave birth in the U.S., then left the country.

#2  Anchor babies are the result of 'interpretation' by SCOTUS. The clear intent of the 14th Amendment was to prohibit southern states from classifying former blacks slaves as non-citizens. Blacks were residents a priori to the Amendment, even specifically, if not 100 percent, counted to enumeration. Since enumeration was so important to be accounted, they were already legally here.

#4  Pretty sure the Court will rule against this.
