Afghanistan
Taliban Suicide Bombers Target US-Afghan Base in Kandahar
[Tolo News] A number of Taliban jacket wallahs targeted the US-Afghan base in Zherai district of southern Kandahar province on Monday afternoon, local officials said.

There were no reports about US and Afghan forces casualties. Seven bombers were wearing ISAF forces uniforms and were killed by US forces, officials said.

Two civilians and a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
soldier were also killed in the attack.

The incident took place when a suicide bomber drove an car bomb into the base and the other bombers entered the gate, said Jawid Faisal, a Provincial Governor Spokesman.

"The bombers clashed with forces for more than an hour and six of them were killed by foreign troops. One NATO soldier was also killed in the attack," he said.

Earlier reports were suggesting that there was a female suicide bomber among the nine bully boys, but officilas now said that it was "a girl with her father -- both civilians -- who were killed in the crossfire." It's confirmed that it was seven snuffies involved in the attack.

ISAF confirmed the attack, but did not provide more details.

However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
other local officials have said that the base is under control right now and the forces have launched a clearing operation.

The Taliban grabbed credit for the attack.

Ghorband Operation "Successful", But Civilian Casualties High
[Tolo News] A number of MPs from northern Parwan province on Monday said that the joint military operation conducted by Afghan and ISAF forces last week in Ghorband district successfully killed 14 Talibs. Though the MPs said that 12 civilians were also killed in the operation.

Reportedly, Taliban capo Maulavi Abdul Rahman, who was recently released from jail by Afghan authorities, was among the turbans who was killed.

Rahman's death could spark blowback to the already controversial detainee release initiative being pushed by President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
as it reinforces the argument of its opponents who claim the freed Death Eaters simply rejoin the fighting. A Review Committee appointed by Karzai has already approved 650 Bagram Prison detainees for release since last August.

Five other turbans were said to have been tossed in the clink
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
by the security forces during the operation.

The Parwan MPs called the operation "constructive," but accused the government of not doing enough to protect civilian lives and criticized the release of Rahman.

"Down with those who killed the civilians, we have always stressed undermining support for the Taliban, but you [the government] declared them your brothers," MP Hussian Naseri said. "Maulavi Abdul Rahman committed crimes and he was tossed in the clink
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
, so down with those who released them - we say that the government is responsible for the blood shed."

President Karzai has justified releasing suspected and proven Death Eaters like Rahman from detention by saying there is insufficient evidence to prosecute them or that freeing them would help advance peace talks with the Taliban.

Many have criticized Karzai and his supporters, however, arguing that they are putting Afghans at risk regardless of the legal or strategic justifications they have for the releases. U.S. officials have been the most vocal opponents of the initiative.

Some MPs were more upset about the civilian casualties than they were the purported "success" of the operation.

Mp Abdul Sattar Khawasi said, "They [the military] claim to have modern technology, but they can't differentiate a six-year-old student with a Taliban fighter and target the innocent and defenseless people."

There were not details provided by security officials on how exactly the civilians casualties occurred during the operation, and who or what was directly responsible.

#1  MP Khawasi's comment suggests strongly that he has not been in a heated gun battle. Perhaps he should go with the Afghan forces on a few missions until he learns how they go. (The alternative is that he knows full well the civilians were not targetted but were unavoidable collateral damage and he is just a lying politician, but I repeat myself.)

Rocket Hits Outskirts of Israel's Eilat Resort
[An Nahar] At least one rocket struck the outskirts of Israel's southern Red Sea resort of Eilat on Monday, a security source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"At least one rocket was fired at Eilat and they found the remains on the outskirts of the city," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, adding the searches were continuing.

Neither the police nor the army could confirm rocket fire on the city, although residents had reported hearing several kabooms earlier in the evening, a police statement said.

The last time the resort city came under attack was in August 2013 when the Israeli army said its Iron Dome anti-missile system had intercepted and destroyed a rocket but did not say where it came from.

That attack was claimed by a Gazoo-based Salafist group called the Mujahedeen Shura Council, which has previously said its snuffies in Sinai had staged several rocket attacks on Eilat.

Misrata soldiers join troops heading to Sebha

Battalion 154 left Misrata this morning, according to Libyan news agency LANA. The battalion is headed for the Timanhent Air Base 30 kilometres south of Sebha, which was yesterday returned to government control.

South Korean trade chief kidnapped in Tripoli
[Libya Herald] The local boss of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) was kidnapped early this morning as he was motoring home.

Details of the abduction are scarce but it is understood that Han Seok-woo was seized from his vehicle by four gunnies.

His abduction was confirmed overnight by the South Korean foreign ministry in Seoul, which said it knew no reason for the crime and that no ransom demand had been received.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, Han has worked in the KOTRA office in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
since 2012. Based on the 18th floor of Tripoli Tower, Han was the sole permanent Korean employee but was assisted by up to four interns sent from Korea.

According to KOTRA's Tripoli branch website, last August the year-on-year trade volume between South Korea and Libya stood at close to $949 million, with the majority of Korean sales being motor vehicles. However South Korean contractors are already at work on major construction projects stalled by the revolution such as the completion of Tripoli's Marriott Hotel.

Han told a high-level environmental conference in Tripoli last June, that one of Libya's biggest challenges was its poor infrastructure. He said that the South Koreans wanted to help build the new Libya.

"We do not do it to gain money but to find new ways of cooperating with Libya in the environment sector" he said, "Korea is involved in all sectors in Libya and we want to act as a bridge between Korean and Libyan companies" .

Libya army intervenes in Sabha
[MAGHAREBIA] Libya's General National Congress on Saturday (January 18th) declared a state of emergency, after fresh festivities erupted in the southern town of Sabha.

At least 30 people have died since the fighting between local tribes broke out last week.

Just since Friday, a 14 year-old boy was rubbed out in Kufra, gunnies kidnapped a South Korean businessman in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, criminal gangs and cops clashed in Janzour, two Italian construction workers went missing in Derna and three soldiers were killed near the Sarir oilfield.

The situation in Sabha is particularly worrisome, however, since it may be linked to Qadaffy loyalists, according to GNC deputy Abdelkader Ahouili.

On Friday, mortars struck the headquarters of the military governor, Sabha residents told Magharebia. The site is surrounded by a densely populated civilian area.

The national army intervened with warplanes to stop the shelling.

"The situation needs troops to support the moves of the sages and the elders," Sabha Local Council chief Ayoub Al-Zaroug told Magharebia.

"If the elders and wise people are not supported with a force, then offenders and oppressors will not be deterred and truth will not prevail," he said.

Drones are already a common sight in Libyan skies, where the aircraft provide information on al-Qaeda, Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
and other threats to the region.

The latest outbreak of tribal violence is yet another hurdle for military forces in the country. Local residents are demanding greater involvement by Tripoli in their city's security.

"Neither the chief of staff of the Libyan army nor the defence minister came to Sabha and see the reality and nature of the situation," teacher Leila Taher complained.

"If you go to a bank you may be exposed to an liquidation, as well as on the street. Most of the people stay in their homes," she told Magharebia.

Engineer Maryam Hassan of the city of Sabha called on the government to remove all armed formations from the city.

"We want to see the army and the police under the supervision of the state carrying the agenda of the nation and loyal to it," she said.

Over 50 Boko Haram members killed in 72 hour gun-battle with Nigerian soldiers
[NIGERIANEYE] The Islamic sect, Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
has lost the strategic Banki town and its bridge in Borno State to Nigerian troops at what sources described as a great cost to its members.

No fewer than 50 hard boyz were killed in a 72 hour battle with soldiers deployed to seize the border town between Nigeria and Cameroun.

Two soldiers were killed and four others maimed in the operation.

Sources said Boko Haram had been using the link bridge to invade Borno State from Cameroun at will.

A military source described the bridge as vital to "our counter-attacks against the hard boys."

"I think their plan was to blow up the bridge but we were able to abort this. We are also in total control of Banki town. Many troops have been deployed in the area while air raid of the cells and bases of the cell continues," the source said.

"The hard boyz suffered many casualties; we were able to kill about 50 of them. The Boko Haram will not admit but the military is firmly in control.

"We have pursued the hard boyz back to their new bases along the Camerounian borders."

When contacted, the front man for the Defence Headquarters, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade said the troop lost two soldiers while four others were maimed.

He said: "The fighting took place in Banki to repel the hard boys. The troops have secured the territory but we have placed the entire border town under heavy air and ground surveillance."

There was no independent confirmation of the claim.

In the last one month, the troops and the hard boyz have been locked in a series of festivities in Bama, Lake Chad and Banki areas.

The Defence Headquarters put the casualty figures on the side of the sect at about 113 as at December 30.

The figures included about 50 Boko Haram hard boyz and 15 soldiers that were killed in a pre-dawn attack of Mohammed Kuru Barracks in Bama.

Boko Haram: 15 killed as gunmen raid Borno village
[DAILYPOST.NG] Few days after a blast hit Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, residents of Gashigar town of Mobbar Local Government have been sent packing by gunnies who invaded the place killing 15 persons and destroying properties worth millions of naira.

DailyPost gathered that hundreds of villagers in Gashigar border community of Borno State are now taking refuge in parts of Niger Republic.

According to residents of Gashigar, a fishing community that shares boundary with villages in Niger Republic, seven persons were killed and over 60 shops and eight vehicles were burnt when the gunnies attacked the area Thursday night at about 7 pm.

Authorities at the Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident even as they debunked the villagers claim that there wasn't police presence in the affected areas.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Gideon Jibrin, "it is not correct that we don't have police formation in Mobbar Local Government and surrounding villages; if their claim is true, then how come we are confirming the incident to you? The report got to the table of our State Commissioner of Police within the shortest possible time after it took place".

He added that apart from the seven persons that were killed, "three others who were running out of fear got drowned in the river".

The attack on Gashigar came about four days after a similar one was lauched on two neighbouring villages where the same gunnies attacked and killed five persons.

Alhaji Talba Gashigar, an immediate former vice chairman of Mobbar Local Government, who witnessed the incident, said the gunnies attacked their village at about 7 pm on Thursday and began to shoot and set shops and vehicles on fire.

"It happened on Thursday at about 7 pm; gunnies invaded our town driving three vehicles and many cycle of violences; they drove straight to the market area and began shooting and setting shops ablaze.

"We had to flee because the gunnies came in numbers and there was no security personnel in our locality. We ran across the borders into the Cameroonian villages but seven of our fellow villagers were rubbed out; and over 60 houses and shops were also burnt down completely.

"They spent about two hours operating in the town, about eight cars were also burnt. Unfortunately, our town has no security operative to protect us. Right from Damasak the local government headquarters of Mobbar, through Gashigar and up to Malumfatori town of Abadam local government, there is no single government security personnel guarding or protecting about six villages in between. You should know that from Damasak to Gashigar is about 50km of dusty Sharan desert road and half way before you get to Dusi, there is a feeder road that leads to Damasak near Diffa border town of Niger Republic.

"We are in a state of fear and confusion now, we cannot sleep in the villages here on the Nigerian side; once dusk begins to set in, everyone locks up and crosses the borders to Diffa. Most of us board our canoes and cross over the river boundary and pass the night in Diffa.

"The attack on us has been very frequent lately, just last week Sunday, they attacked the villages of Yawuma-ango and Jabulam at night and killed five persons; three at Yawuma-ango and two in Jabulam".

Gashigar called on government to step in and assist the local youth vigilante that are currently the security force manning the area.

"We know the reason for these attack is because our young men had joined the Civilian-JTF and the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
is not happy about it; perhaps that is why they are attacking us in this manner", the former vice Chairman said.

Arabia
Fresh clashes in northern Yemen
[Yemen Post] Tribal sources confirmed early on Monday morning that despite a truce, Salafis and Houthis gunnies clashed overnight in the Amran province, a stronghold of the powerful al-Ahmar family.

Located directly north of the capital, Sana'a, Amran represents a key strategic military position since its control would mean direct access to Sana'a central government and thus the political and institutional heart of Yemen. When earlier this month Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is "God is Great, Death to America", Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews" ...
gunnies advanced against their politico-religious nemesis within the province, President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi had to intervene by imposing the terms of a ceasefire. Keen to defuse the situation he ordered both factions to withdraw their men and for Salafi gunnies to vacate Dammaj, where tensions first erupted late last October.

With tensions flaring up again, tribal sources revealed that an estimated 12 people (eight Houthis and four Sunni rustics) were killing late on Sunday, warning that the truce was on very shaky ground should nothing be done to calm the situation.

According to local reports it seems that Houthi gunnies would have attempted to seize control over a mountain, prompting the fury of local rustics affiliated to al-Ahmar clan, a strong supporter of the Salafi movement in Yemen.

Should the truce fail to hold, Yemen would be at risk of further fragmentation and sectarian strife at a time when the impoverished nation should be pulling the curtain on its National Dialogue Conference.

To add to Yemen's current political fragility, NDC representatives expressed some last minute reservations toward the text of the final agreement.

The South Division of Detective Branch (DB) arrested TTP members Mehmud, 26, from Malir district, and Usman, 23, and Fakhrul Hasan, 50, from Kourangi district, in front of Shilpakala Academy around 11pm.

Two separate cases were filed against them with Ramna cop shoppe under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 and the Foreign Act, 1964.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court yesterday granted the DB 13 days in the cases to interrogate them.

"The detained TTP members from Arakan in Myanmar settled in Pakistain with their families and secured Pak citizenships. According to DB officials, they used to visit Myanmar often," said Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre.

DC-DB (south) Krishnapada Roy, DC-DB (north) Nazmul Alam, DC Masudur Rahman at the Media Centre and ADC-DB (south) Sanowar Hossain were also present at the briefing.

Monirul said of the TTP men, Mehmud and Usman did not have any passports although a Pak passport was found in the possession of Fakhrul, but his visa expired. All the three accused had been staying at Kakrail to start for Teknaf in Cox's Bazar.

"The detectives were informed that the TTP members were staying in Bangladesh to carry out destructive activities ahead of January 5 election," he said.

DB officials said although all the three detained used to speak Urdu, of them, Usman and Fakhrul could speak in Bengali. Fakhrul was acting as guide to travel to Teknaf, said the DB officials.

Monirul said the manuals seized from the three Death Eaters contained instructions of making of 12 types of bombs.

"All the three TTP Death Eaters have also the expertise in the making of 12 types of bombs, including grenades and boom-mobiles. They also have the expertise in the operation of heavy and automatic firearms used by Death Eaters in Afghanistan and Iraq," he said.

Among them, Fakhrul came in Bangladesh one and a half months ago while Mehmud and Usman had been arrested earlier by another intelligence agency.

"After being freed on bail, they wanted to go back to Pakistain. But Fakhrul did not let them return as he had a special mission to conduct destructive activities in Bangladesh. Their attempt was foiled for the activities of the DB," Monirul claimed.

According to the DB officials, the detained TTP members had trainings from the TTP experts at Wazoo in Pakistain on making bombs, attacking techniques and operation of various firearms. They were also determined to be organised under the banner of Tehrik-e-Azadi Arakan for fighting there.

The DB officials said they had been trying to know about the motive behind their attempt to travel to Teknaf as well as their aides and associates in Bangladesh.

Russia seeks as many as four 'black widows'
Russian security services may be seeking as many as four "black widows" dispatched to carry out terrorist attacks related to the Winter Olympics, including at least one woman believed to be in or near Sochi, U.S. and Russian sources said on Monday.

Wanted posters distributed in Sochi describe at least one suspected terrorist -- Ruzana Ibragimova, also known as Salima, the 22-year-old widow of an Islamic terrorist militant killed by Russian security forces last year. The posters describe her as having a limp in her right leg, a left arm that does not bend at the elbow and a 4-inch scar on her cheek.

The posters say that Russian security officials have been informed of her possible departure from Dagestan earlier this month, and that she may be used for an attack inside the Olympic zone.

On Sunday, a video emerged in which two men from an Islamist terrorist militant group threatened to attack the Olympics, warning that "a surprise" is in store for Putin and tourists attending the games. The men claim responsibility in the video for two suicide bombings last month in Volgograd that killed 34 people.

"That which we will do, that which we have done, is only a little example, a little step," one the men, from the Islamist organization Anars Al Sunna, says in the hour-long video.

The men in the video claim to be from Dagestan. They appear to construct explosive devices and document, step by step, how they planned the Volgograd attacks. They say in a part of the recording directed at Russian officials that they "will continue to kill you and your soldiers."

Shia scholar gunned down in Peshawar
[DAWN] Gunmen killed a Shia Mohammedan scholar in the restive northwestern Pak city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
on Monday, police and hospital officials said.

Allama Alim Al-Musvi was shot while walking to the mosque in the historic Kissa Khwani market of Peshawar, the capital of the Khyber Pakhtukhwa province that borders Afghanistan, police said.

"Two gunnies opened fire on the scholar and escaped in the narrow streets when he came out of his house and walked towards the mosque," local police official Fazal Jan told AFP.

Al-Musvi was a locally respected scholar and used to deliver sermons at special Shia gatherings, he added.

A government hospital front man, Jamil Khan, confirmed the death.

There has been a rise in sectarian violence in Pakistain after several deadly festivities between Sunni and Shia Mohammedan groups near the capital Islamabad in November.

On November 19 gunnies killed a senior Shia university director along with his driver in Lahore, while another Shia leader and his guard were killed in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
in early December.

Three days later, Shamsur Rehman Muawiya, chief of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jammat (ASWJ) for Punjab province, was killed in Lahore.

On January 3, gunnies killed two senior members of a Sunni Mohammedan group in a rare attack in the Pak capital.

Pakistain is rife with sectarian festivities, with Sunni Death Eater groups linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban often attacking gatherings by Shias, who constitute some 20 per cent of the country's predominantly Mohammedan population.

Taliban bombing near GHQ kills 13
[DAWN] RAWALPINDI: At least 13 people were killed Monday in a kaboom near the R.A. Bazaar in Rawalpindi, a day after one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in recent years.

A further 18 people were maimed in the blast which tore through the R.A. bazaar, close to the army's General Headquarters (GHQ), at around 7.45 am.

Superintendent of Police Potohar said six army personnel and seven civilians bit the dust in the attack.

Haroon Joya, a senior police official at the scene of Monday's blast, also told news hounds six soldiers and seven civilians had been killed, according to news agency AFP.

"It was a suicide kaboom; we are collecting evidence from the spot. We have collected some body parts suspected to be of the jacket wallah," he said.

Earlier, the top government official in Rawalpindi, Sajid Zafar Dall, said 18 people were maimed in the blast.

"The attack occurred when children were going to school. Our initial assessment is that the bomber was possibly on a bicycle and he then approached the target on foot," Dall said.

The injured persons were taken to nearby hospitals and several were said to be in a critical condition.

Eyewitnesses describe the power of the kaboom

The blast left the market place a mess of twisted shutters and rubble, with pieces of human flesh scattered on the ground, an AFP news hound said.

A bomb disposal officer said the device used five kg (11 pounds) of "very high quality" explosives and was packed with ball bearings and iron shards to cause maximum carnage.

"I was reading a newspaper after opening my shop and all of a sudden I heard a big blast," said Liaqat Ali, a grocery shop owner near the site.

"The intensity of the blast threw me off my chair. I rushed outside and saw smoke and smoke everywhere. I saw injured lying and screaming on ground."

Police and commandos cordoned off the area as ambulances took maimed to a nearby military hospital.

TTP claims responsibility

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) front man Shahidullah Shahid claimed Monday's attack as 'payback' for a deadly military raid on the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) in Rawalpindi in 2007.

"It was carried by one of our suicide bombers to take Dire Revenge™ for the Red Mosque massacre," he told AFP.

Three Syrian refugees killed on their way to Jordan
[Egypt Independent] Three Syrian refugees died in Ramtha hospital in Jordan of gunshot wounds, while with four others who were maimed, before they entered Jordan on Sunday.

A Jordanian medical source said that one of the other injured is in stable, pH balanced condition, while the other three injured were referred to other hospitals in Amman.

The source stressed that the hospital is doing its best to help the Syrian refugees, providing them with all the treatment they need, and referring those who need extra help to other hospitals.

On the other hand, a Jordanian military source pointed out that the Syrians were trying to flee from Syria to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
across the border line, but they were maimed by gunfire, before entering Jordan, where the armed forces provided first aid to them, then took them to the hospital .

Since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in mid-March 2011, Jordan has hosted more than 600,000 Syrian refugees, in addition to the presence of more than 600,000 Syrians before the events started.

Syria Jihadists Impose Taliban-Style Music, Smoking Ban
[An Nahar] The jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
has banned music and smoking in Syria's Raqa, days after taking control of the northern city following battles with rebel groups.

ISIL said it had decided to "ban the sale of music CDs, music players, and playing songs in cars and buses and in shops and all places," in a statement posted on jihadist websites and signed the "Wali (governor) of Raqa".

The group added they had taken the step because musical instruments and singing are "proscribed in Islam because they distract from remembering God and the Koran".

In a second statement, ISIL said that as part of efforts to "apply sharia (Islamic) law... it is completely forbidden to sell cigarettes or water pipes in any place".

Such bans are reminiscent of those the Taliban imposed on television, cinema and music in Afghanistan when in power up until 2001.

ISIL has alienated activists and other opposition fighters in Syria, who accuse it of imposing a reign of terror on areas where it operates.

Its actions provoked a backlash from powerful rebel groups in early January, and the group is now fighting opposition forces in several parts of northern Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday that ISIL fighters "withdrew after midnight yesterday (Sunday) from the western Aleppo countryside and evacuated their positions".

The Britannia-based Observatory also reported heavy festivities between jihadists and rebels on the outskirts of the town of Azaz in Aleppo province, near the border with Turkey.

Rebel groups in the town shelled areas where ISIL fighters were with mortar rounds, the Observatory said.

Death Toll from Tripoli Clashes Rises to Six as Fighting Intensifies
[An Nahar] The corpse count from the festivities in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
rose to six on Monday and the fighting intensified in the evening despite a reported army plan to impose a ceasefire.

"The fighting frontiers in Tripoli are witnessing fierce festivities and the sounds of RPG kabooms are echoing heavily in the city, while army units are continuing to respond to the sources of fire," state-run National News Agency reported.

Earlier, a security source told Agence La Belle France Presse that six people have been killed in four days of fighting.

"Three people, a woman and two men, were killed in heavy festivities overnight in which heavy artillery and rockets were used," the source told AFP.

The three were from the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood, whose residents regularly clash with those in the adjacent district of Jabal Mohsen.

A fourth person maimed in fighting on Sunday died of their wounds on Monday.

In addition, two people from Jabal Mohsen were killed on Monday, including one shot by a sniper, the source said.

The source said at least 45 people were also maimed in the festivities which erupted on Friday when a Jabal Mohsen man was rubbed out in nearby al-Qobbeh.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy had come up with a new idea, one that didn't involve kerosene...
Tripoli MP Mohammed Kabbara, who is a member of al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
bloc, announced that political contacts in the afternoon led to a security plan under which the army would start redeploying in the city starting 6:00 p.m. in a bid to impose a ceasefire.

"It will start in al-Qobbeh and then Jabal Mohsen and the deployment will be completed at 6:00 a.m. in Bab al-Tabbaneh and the rest of areas," said Kabbara.

The politician urged "all residents to deal positively with the measures that will be implemented by the army," stressing that "security chaos in Tripoli only serves the enemies of the city."

He called on residents to foil the plots of "anyone seeking to harm their city."

For its part, LBCI television said "the army will deploy in al-Baqqar, al-Riva, al-Qobbeh and Jabal Mohsen and would complete its plan by deploying in Bab al-Tabbaneh and Syria Street should the plan's first phase succeed."

For his part, al-Mustaqbal bloc MP Samir al-Jisr said "these festivities started when two men were shot -- the first from the Assi family of Jabal Mohsen and the second from Deir Amar," noting that "the first man died of his wounds and the second is recovering."

Iran Curbs Enrichment as Nuclear Deal Takes Effect
[An Nahar] Iran on Monday halted production of 20 percent enriched uranium, marking the coming into force of an interim deal with world powers on its disputed nuclear program.

The U.N. atomic watchdog confirmed that Iran's partial nuclear freeze, part of a landmark deal struck in November with the P5+1 powers -- the U.S., China, Russia, La Belle France, Britannia and Germany -- began on Monday as planned.

Mohammad Amiri, a top official of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, told the IRNA news agency that Tehran had kept to its part of the deal reached in Geneva.

"In line with the implementation of the Geneva joint plan of action, Iran suspended the production of 20 percent enriched uranium in the presence of U.N. nuclear watchdog inspectors at Natanz and Fordo sites," Amiri said.

The ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency said in a report passed to member states that Iran "has ceased enriching uranium above five percent" fissile purities at the Natanz and Fordo facilities.

The report, seen by AFP, said that Iran was also converting its stockpile of medium-enriched uranium, a particular concern to the international community since it can be relatively easily be further purified to weapons-grade.

It added that Iran "is not conducting any further advances to its activities" at Natanz, Fordo or the heavy-water reactor under construction at Arak, which could in theory provide Iran with weapons-grade plutonium.

"It's all fine, all their requirements have been fulfilled," one diplomat told AFP.

16 killed by twin bombs at Syria-Turkey border post
Two car bombs hit a rebel-held post on the Syrian border with Turkey on Jan. 20, killing at least 16 people and closing the frontier, opposition activists and fighters said, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The Bab al-Hawa crossing is held by a rebel alliance called the Islamic Front, which has been fighting with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a small but powerful affiliate of al Qaeda with a core of foreign fighters.

It was not immediately clear who had planted the bombs. The attack occurred a few days after a car bomb that killed 26 in the eastern city of Jarablus and which activists blamed on ISIL.

The anti-Assad Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said at least six of the dead from the bombing were Islamist fighters. It said the rest were likely civilians, and that about 20 others were wounded in the blasts.

Syrian rebels in Bab al-Hawa, in the northwestern province of Idlib, said the border was shut on the Turkish side. A Syrian activist at Bab al-Hawa said the two car bombs exploded within 10 minutes of each other.

The governor's office in neighbouring Turkish Hatay province said the explosion was on the Syrian side of the border. Its press spokesman Cahit Dogan said there were no reports of damage or injuries on the Turkish side.
