#2  Dear Rantburgers since you are struck by a brutal wave of global warming I am giving you the Russian/Gulagian method of measuring temperatures when no thermometer is available.

If there is an icy mist then that means minus 40F
If breathing is noisy but breathing is not difficult it means minus 58F.
if when you spit teh spitting freezes before reaching the ground it means minus 67F

Afghanistan
U.S. Designates Taliban Leader Qari Saifullah Terrorist
[Tolo News] The U.S. State Department on Tuesday declared Qari Saifullah, a Quetta-based Taliban leader, a specially designated global terrorist. The leader is a Taliban's shadow deputy governor and an operational commander in southern Zabul province, but the designation identifies him as a resident of Quetta.

The State Department reported that Saifullah has used Taliban fighters to organise terrorist activities against the Afghan government and coalition forces in southern Zabul province.

He has also directly ordered his subordinates to conduct explosive attacks, small arms fire attacks and rocket attacks in Zabul against the government.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village the snowball down Jack's back had finally melted......
a number of the Afghan politicians believe that the U.S. State Department move is beneficial for Afghanistan's peace and stability.

"Including these individuals on the list could be a positive move for Afghanistan, because it creates fear amongst the people and those involved in destabilising and damaging Afghanistan would realise that there are people who monitor their movements," said Semeen Barakzai, a member of Parliament's Defense Committee.

Some Afghan political experts said that this kind of move would only be effective if well-coordinated between the international community and Afghanistan.

"It could be effective when there is understanding and unanimity of views between the Afghan government and international community with regard to dangerous persons, turbans and Taliban networks," political analyst Jawid Kohistan
...a backwoods district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa distinguished by being even more rustic than is the norm among the local Pashtuns....
i said. "If the U.S. declares them turbans and the Afghan government recommends they be excluded from the blacklist, in that case, this wouldn't be effective."

On January 14 of last year, six Taliban gunnies subordinate to Saifullah attacked a Romanian convoy in the vicinity of Abdul Haq Kalay village with rocket-propelled grenades, according to the State Department.

On Sept 28, 2011, two jacket wallahs under the leader's direction planned to attack the U.S.-led provincial reconstruction teams in Qalat and Shajoy districts of Zabul.

On Nov 25, 2010, the leader has reportedly ordered a Taliban capo and Taliban shadow sub-governor of Atghar District of Zabul to transport light weapons to Qalat City Centre in Zabul. The shipment included approximately 25 Kalashnikov rifles, 10 machine guns, five RPGs and 20 grenades.

Suicide bombers planned to use these weapons against coalition forces and Afghan National Security Forces, specifically targeting the Second Afghan National Army Brigade and Police Headquarters in Zabul.

Attack on Top Afghan Intelligence Official Foiled
[Tolo News] Three jacket wallahs armed an automatic rifle and a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) were tossed in the calaboose
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
Wednesday morning in Kabul before launching an attack on the Afghan's intelligence agency's number two, Mohammad Zia, said the National Directorate of Security (NDS).

The plot had been formulated on the orders of Taliban capo Maulavi Ismail, who according to the NDS, is based in the Pak city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
.

"The NDS personnel have confiscated one RPG7, one Kalashnikov rifle, five magazines, 12 hand grenades, one balloon full of kabooms and pressure cooker, 2 packs kabooms, 18 electronic capsules, 9 remote control and a number of explosive wires while arresting the three criminals," the intelligence agency said.

The plot comes after the Taliban blamed the Afghan intelligence agency for the recent liquidations of Taliban leaders in Pakistain.

The criminal mastermind of the attack was Shafiqullah, an origin of Tagab district in north of Kabul, the NDS said. The two others are identified as Gul Khan of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province, who is a bomb maker, and Hamidullah of Kunduz province, an expert on remote-controlled explosives.

The intelligence agency did not comment on how the plot was planned.

The bombers in initial investigations have confessed that the plan was on orders of Maulavi Ismail and Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, a senior Taliban leader, both in Pakistain, the NDS concluded.

Iran Navy Thwarts Pirate Attacks on Iranian Oil Tanker
[Shabelle] An attempt by pirates to hijack an Iranian oil tanker in international waters was foiled by the timely action of the Iranian warships present in the region.

Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siyavash Jarreh announced on Wednesday that the Navy's 28th fleet of warship saved the Iranian tanker from pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden.

"The Iranian oil tanker was attacked by 12 pirate boats this morning but they failed due to the timely action of the 28th flotilla of warships and the pirates fled the scene," he added.

The admiral underlined that the Iranian oil tanker was escorted by the Navy flotilla through the waterway and continued its path towards its destination fully safely.

In relevant remarks last month, a senior Iranian commander praised the exceptionally good performance of the country's naval forces for maintaining security to the international waters by escorting thousands of vessels in the high seas.

"In the last three years, around 3,000 cargo ships and oil tankers have been escorted by the Navy's commandos and vessels," Commander of the Iranian Navy's Missile Program Admiral Ali Vafadar told FNA in December.

He also said that pirates' attempts to hijack 147 cargo ships and oil tankers in international waters have been aborted due to the timely action of the Iranian warships deployed in the region.

Vafadar said that the Iranian naval forces have also managed to seize control of a number of pirate boats and vessels, arrest their crews and transferred them to Iran to stand trial for their crimes.

The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.

Shebab Militants in Somalia Ban Internet
[An Nahar] Militants from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
on Wednesday banned citizens in the areas of Somalia they control from using the Internet.

They gave all communication companies providing web services a 15-day ultimatum to shut down their operations.

"Any company or individual that is found ignoring the call will be considered to be working with the enemy and they will be dealt with in accordance to the Sharia" or Islamic law, the statement which was posted on pro-Shabaab websites added.

The bully boyz impose strict laws in the zones under their control and frequently arrest people on suspicion of "spying."

The Internet is widely used in Somalia, which has been wracked by civil war for more than two decades, with the Shabaab considered the biggest obstacle to peace.

The Shabaab once controlled most of southern and central Somalia but withdrew from fixed positions in Mogadishu two years ago.

African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
troops -- including large contingents from Uganda, Kenya and Burundi -- have since recaptured a series of bully boy bastions and tried to prop up Somalia's fledgling government forces.

But a string of devastating Shabaab attacks against foreign and government targets have shattered hopes of a rebirth for the war-ravaged capital and demonstrated that the Islamist outfit's disruptive power is undiminished.

Apo killings: Boko Haram suspect confesses to meeting in uncompleted building
[Nigerian Tribune] A Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
suspect, on Tuesday, told a panel of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) investigating the alleged extra judicial killing of some people who are squatting in an uncompleted building in Apo area of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Abuja, that members of the sect were meeting in the uncompleted building before he was locked away
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!

The suspect, Mohammed Adamu, who made the confession when members of the commission visited the uncompleted building, where eight people were allegedly killed on September 20, 2013, revealed that the group had planned to attack government institutions in Abuja before they were arrested.

Adamu added that one Suleiman, who is on the lam, is the leader of the sect in Abuja and that they met three times in a week in the uncompleted building to plan how they will defend their religion.

He also revealed that the members met between 8.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. daily.

Speaking after the examination of the site, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Bem Angwe, said "the commission will conclude its public hearing at the end of the month and will make its findings public adding that the public hearing will continue at its headquarters where more testimonies will be taken."

The Nigerian Army had on December 22, 2013 defended the killing of some eight persons during a military operation at Apo District of the Federal Capital Territory, on September 20.

The dear departed and scores of others who were grievously injured in the operation were described by the military as Boko Haram suspects.

Appearing before the panel then, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, who was represented by Commander, Brigade of Guards Nigeria Army, Major Gen Emmanuel Atewe, told the Human Rights panel that the incident was an isolated case and was unfortunate.

He said the army acted promptly to avert what would have amounted to collateral damage in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A non-government organization, Global Rights and the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
MORAS) had jointly filed a petition before the NHRC, urging it to probe the incident.

He explained that the Apo incident was part of an ongoing military operation to rid the FCT of suspected Boko Haram members and ensure peace and stability in the country.

The army chief said the operation in Apo was sequel to a report from the Department of State Security (DSS) alleging a planned attack by members of the Boko Haram on Abuja.

According to him: "Between 18 and 19th of September, two persons were arrested in Abuja and they made useful confessions that there existed cache of arms hidden at Apo Cemetery to be used in a planned attack."

He also stated that it was based on the confessional statements of the suspects that the military went to the cemetery to uncover the weapons.

"It was in the night, the area was bushy and we could not navigate the cemetery and the suspects could not identify the actual spot where the weapons were buried. It was at that point the suspects said their leader, one Suleiman, if arrested would show the spot where the ammunition was hidden," he added.

He further explained that the suspects said Suleiman was residing in an uncompleted building in Apo, adding: "It was on that premise that the team cautiously moved to the uncompleted building to arrest Suleiman. But unfortunately, as troops were deploying to cordon the building, the fire came; first it was a single shot before rapid shots followed. Under self defence, the troops returned fire."

He also added that the DSS had cogent information on a planned attack on FCT, stressing that the operation was necessary to avert the plan.

"The military personnel operating in FCT are well trained in handling arms and have exercised restraint in the discharge of their duties. We have no reason to kill anybody dastardly or act under provocation.

"Apo is an isolated case and very unfortunate, the security agents acted proactively to prevent collateral damage that may have taken place in Abuja if the planned attack had taken place.

"The adversaries did firearm movement, they were firing as they escaped, a loaded magazine was found and from our records, it does not belong to the military," Ihejirika said.

However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
the Army hinted that Suleiman is still on the lam and the cache of arms at the Apo cemetery undiscovered.

"We have carried out 153 operations successfully, made arrests and did not shoot anybody."

Bahrain Jails 22 Shiites 15 Years over Police Death
[An Nahar] A Bahraini court sentenced 22 Shiites to 15 years in prison Wednesday over the killing of a policeman and wounding another in an attack outside Manama, a judicial source said.

Another defendant was tossed in the clink
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for only three years because he is a minor, while two others were acquitted.

The 25 were accused of involvement with a bomb that targeted police in the Shiite village of Akr, and of attacking security forces with iron rods and petrol bombs, BNA state news agency said.
... and if you can't believe the state news agency who can you believe?

The policeman died of wounds after an iron rod penetrated his skull, BNA said citing a prosecution statement.

Sixteen of the defendants remain on the lam, it said.

Since the 2011 Shiite-led uprising, which called for democratic reforms, demonstrations have regularly been held in villages around the capital, often sparking festivities with security forces.

At least 89 people have been killed in the Sunni-ruled kingdom since the protests began, according to the International Federation for Human Rights.

Several kabooms have taken place in recent months, including one that targeted a Sunni mosque close to the royal court in July but caused no casualties.

#1  Sliding into Anarchy and then...Civil War.

Do you have a lot of Moslem neighbors?
In BanglaDesh they do.

Back in 1971 the Moslems killed 3 MILLION Hindus ( the majority were unarmed civilians and a lot were machine gunned to death by Moslems in trucks) and the Hindus never finished that war.

Too bad for them. But , as I say, it happens when you have a lot of Moslems for neighbors. The trick is just let a LOT of Moslems in your country and then kick back and watch what happens.

Clash in South Waziristan kills three soldiers, 10 militants
[DAWN] Pak security forces claim to have killed 10 gunnies repulsing a terrorist attack on a security check post in South Wazoo tribal agency of Pakistain, military officials said on Wednesday.

According to an ISPR blurb, security forces troops responded valiantly when hard boyz attacked the Green Ridge Post at around 8pm. Three security forces personnel were also killed during the exchange of fire.

The number and identity of those killed could not be verified independently.

This a rare terrorist attack on Pak security forces in South Waziristan as armed festivities are normally reported in North Waziristan.

South Waziristan and North Waziristan are two of seven semi-autonomous regions in Pakistain's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) governed by tribal laws.

No one has claimed the attack as yet, however, an bad boy insurgency led by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) plagues the region, which is close to the porous Pak-Afghan border, while the area is known to be infested with Death Eaters, including the al Qaeda and several other armed bad boy organizations.

Reliable casualty figures are difficult to acquire in the tribal areas, which are largely off-limits to news hounds, because of security worries and government restrictions.

The TTP gunnies have killed thousands of soldiers, police and civilians over the past few years, declaring war on the government to get it to break ties with the United States and establish Islamic law throughout the country.

Indiana man stopped for speeding in Madison County had 48 bombs, prosecutor says
[Columbus Dispatch] An Indiana National Guardsman was arrested outside Columbus on New Year’s Day after a state trooper found nearly 50 bombs and the blueprints for a Navy SEAL training facility inside his car, the Madison County prosecutor said yesterday.

Andrew Scott Boguslawski, 43, also had a remote-control device to detonate the bombs, Madison County Prosecutor Stephen Pronai said. Boguslawski’s civilian job is as a groundskeeper at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in south-central Indiana. Prosecutors could not say definitively yesterday whether the blueprints in his car were for the facility where he worked.
Mowing and snow removal is boring, this is just my hobby.
Boguslawski also had a bulletproof vest in his car, Pronai said.

“He said something to the trooper about making a bomb vest,” Pronai said.
You look like a 52XL, I may have something in the trunk.
Lt. Col. Cathy Van Bree, a spokeswoman for the Indiana National Guard, said Boguslawski is a specialist in the guard who does intelligence analysis and has top-secret clearance.
Promotions comes slow in Indiana. Good luck with your next PR update Bogus.
Pronai said Boguslawski, who is from Moores Hill, Ind., appeared to be heading to Indiana when a state trooper clocked him going 85 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-70. When the trooper came back to the car to give Boguslawski a ticket, he saw the handle of a gun between his legs.
Is that your pistol or....
The trooper ordered Boguslawski out of the car and called for backup. Investigators found three more guns in the car — all loaded — and 48 bombs. They also found material to make more explosives.
What good are they, if they're not loaded ?
Pronai said most of the bombs were small. He said investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have searched Boguslawski’s house, and that local and federal investigators are trying to determine whether Boguslawski planned to attack the military facility. They are also combing through a computer, cameras and GPS found in his car. Boguslawski is charged in Madison County with one count of manufacturing explosives, a second-degree felony. A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for Friday. He is being held at Tri-County Jail in Mechanicsburg in lieu of a $1 million bond.
Hopefully security at Crane Naval Depot has been alerted.

I live in Michigan and am frequently in IN. Comparatively, the Hoosiers are considerably more restrained as to speed. Not sure whether it's something in the water or because of more enthusiastic enforcement.
As cars move up or back, change lanes, or positions relative to one another, it looks like a slow-motion dance--because the relative speeds are so similar--compared to MI.
Nevertheless, fifteen over gets everybody's attention.
The drug transporters are pretty clear that you don't do that. Some people should be making an extra effort to avoid attention.

#2  Brilliant, Hemingway. I don't know how you keep coming up with these insights.

Do you keep these gems of wisdom on index cards? Wire-bound notepads?

Or does your caregiver pin notes to your shirt-sleeves in the morning?

When private feelings must be expressed,
Some think that Moleskine is the best,
But for whacking Moslems, I suggest
Koranic goatskin palimpsest.

[An Nahar] Military Tribunal Judge Imad al-Zein called on Wednesday for the death penalty against more than 12 suspects for planting bombs in the eastern Bekaa valley.

'Prisoners Executed by Jihadists' in Syria's Aleppo
[An Nahar] Video footage posted online Wednesday shows nine bodies of prisoners, blindfolded and hands bound, in pools of blood allegedly executed by al-Qaeda-linked Death Eaters in northern Syria, activists said.

The footage, posted by Shahba Press, a network of activists in the region, shows the nine men were all shot in the head.

While recording the images, the cameraman is heard to say: "This was done by ISIL. Are the victims apostates? No, they're Mohammedans."

He was referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
, whose Aleppo headquarters was overrun by rebels earlier Wednesday as festivities between opposition forces raged into a sixth day.

On the footage, purportedly shot at the headquarters, another voice is heard to say: "These are the same acts carried out by the shabiha (pro-regime militia). They were all shot in the eye or the head."

One Shahba Press activist told Agence La Belle France Presse "dozens of prisoners were freed but dozens of others were executed on Monday or Tuesday by ISIL during the assault on their HQ" at a hospital in the Qadi Askar neighborhood of Aleppo.

The jihadists' loss in Syria's second city came a day after ISIL's front man threatened to "crush" rebels who have attacked the group in multiple provinces.

Syrian Observatory for Human rights chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP the killings in the headquarters were a war crime.

"Such acts confirm what we have already said -- ISIL commits war crimes, crimes against humanity, and does the opposite of its claim that it came here to help the Syrian people," he said.

"The people of Syria want to get rid of a dictatorship and embrace democracy, not a new dictatorship in Islamic garb," he said.

"At the same time, we condemn the executions of ISIL members. The Observatory will continue to report all war crimes and crimes against humanity no matter who carried them out."

Door of Minkara-Affiliated Mosque Taken Off in Tripoli
[An Nahar] Unknown assailants on Wednesday took off the door of a mosque affiliated with Sheikh Hashem Minkara in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

"A group of young men took off the door of al-Soufiah mosque in Tripoli," LBCI television detailed.

The same source noted that the mosque is affiliated with Head of the pro-Syria Islamic Tawhid Movement-Command Council
...The Tawhid party is divided into two parts, one led by Sheikh Bilal Shaaban, a close ally of Hezbollah who is said to be financed by Iran, while the other is headed by Sheikh Hashem Minkara, a staunch Syria supporter...
Sheikh Minkara.

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory the smoke and fumes had dispersed, to reveal an ominous sight...
an official in the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects - also known as al-Ahbash, informed An Nahar daily on Wednesday that a Salafist gang took over a place of worship located in Tripoli's vegetable market on Monday.

The mosque has been under al-Ahbash's control for the past 30 years, according to the official.

"The group immediately controlled the house of prayer, driving out its Imam and orator," he said.

"Then the al-Qaeda flag was flown on the mosque's minaret, and its name has been replaced with 'Ibn Taymiyyah mosque'."

Only days earlier, attackers set ablaze Father Ibrahim Sarrouj's famed library in Tripoli.

Al-Saeh Library is considered one of the most renowned libraries in Tripoli and the second largest in Leb.

Sarrouj says the library contains more than 80,000 books.

Syrian Observatory Says 'Hardly Any' ISIL Left in Aleppo as Jihadist HQ Falls to Rebels
[An Nahar] "Hardly any" jihadists from the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
are left in Aleppo, a Syrian NGO said Wednesday after the fall of ISIL's headquarters there.

"ISIL withdrew from the Inzarat area after festivities with fighters from rebel... brigades, and the post office building was taken over by Islamist rebel fighters" who had been battling ISIL, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"There are hardly any ISIL members left in the city of Aleppo."

The Observatory said earlier that fighters from several Syrian rebel brigades have seized the headquarters of ISIL in Aleppo.

"Fighters from several Islamist rebel brigades took control of the children's hospital in the Qadi Askar district, which is the headquarters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in the city," the Observatory said.

The Observatory said it was unclear what had happened to "hundreds" of ISIL fighters who had been inside the headquarters.

The rebels freed dozens of people who were being held prisoner in the ISIL headquarters, it added, citing initial reports.

ISIL has been fighting a coalition of moderate and Salafist tough guys angered by a spate of abuses by the jihadists, who have been accused of kidnapping and killing civilians and rival rebels.

Late Tuesday, an ISIL front man said the group would "crush" opposition fighters and warned that it considered members of the opposition National Coalition and the military command of the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood...
to be "legitimate targets."
