Fifth Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine added to line-up at Naval Base Point Loma
[SD UT] The USS Greeneville on Monday was added to the stable of Los Angeles-class, fast-attack submarines that are homeported in San Diego Bay as part of Submarine Squadron 11.

Naval Base Point Loma now has five of the nuclear-powered submarines, which are regularly sent on deployment to the Indo-Pacific, sometimes to help protect carrier strike groups based in San Diego.

Greeneville operates with a crew of roughly 155 sailors and is capable of firing land-attack Tomahawk cruise missiles that travel upwards of 900 miles.

Greeneville — which bears the name of Greeneville, Tennessee, the home of Andrew Johnson, the nation’s 17th president — was commissioned 28 years ago, making it one of the oldest submarines in the Navy. It recently finished a 30-month engineering overhaul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

"(Our) crew has demonstrated their professionalism and resilience in safely bringing Greeneville to our new home," Commanding Officer Chad Tella said in a prepared statement. "I could not be more proud of each and every crewmember."

South Sudan rebel leader threatens withdrawal from Kenya-mediated talks
[SUDANTRIBUNE] A South Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
ese rebel leader has threatened to withdraw from participation in the Kenyan-mediated peace talk, citing the alleged presence of government operatives assigned by political rivals to assassinate him.

In a letter addressed to the Kenyan high-level mediation for South Sudan, Gen. Stephen Buoy Rolnyang asked that his team be allowed to return to their base.

Gen Rolynyang is the Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of South Sudan People’s Movement/Army (SSPM/A), a rebel movement fighting to overthrow Kiir.

The 20 May letter is addressed to the chief mediator, Gen. Lazaros Sumbeiywo.

Citing security concerns, the (SSPM/A) claimed he got intelligence that a team allegedly sent by Kiir’s security advisor, Tut Gatluak is in Kenya to assassinate him.

"On 16/5/2024, the Juba security agents employed Kenyan agents wearing dark glass eyes and came to the Ole Sereni hotel where they kept hiding near the hotel toilets in the evening carrying some pictures in their hands definitely which might be my picture. I noticed them and I returned to my room and immediately alerted the security. I reported it to you the following morning in the meeting hall which Hon. Makuei Lueth refuted in front of everybody," partly reads the letter.

UK terms ICC announcement 'just plain wrong'
[GEO.TV] The United Kingdom’s Foreign Minister David Cameron has said the arrest warrants sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor are “just plain wrong”.

“I don’t believe for one moment that seeking these warrants is going to help get the hostages out, it’s not going to help get aid in, and it’s not going to help deliver a sustainable ceasefire,” he told the House of Lords.

Cameroonian expelled from Russia for supporting rebels in Syria and Ukraine
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] A citizen of Cameroon, who participated in an ethnic criminal group and was identified by officers of the FSB Directorate for the Belgorod Region, was ordered by the court to be expelled from Russia. The regional FSB press service reported this on May 20.

“The illegal activities of a citizen of the Republic of Cameroon, a resident of the city of Belgorod, who took part in the activities of an ethnic criminal group involved in inciting ethnic hatred,” the message states.

According to the FSB, the Cameroonian worked at construction sites in the Valuysky urban district. The man is a supporter of radical Islam and has repeatedly expressed support for terrorist groups operating in Niger, as well as in support of rebels in Syria and Ukraine.
Cameroon’s population is about 30% Moslem. Groups in Niger and Syria could be ISIS. Where Ukraine comes into the mix is a puzzler…
In addition, a citizen of Cameroon lived in Russia in violation of the rules of stay. By decision of the Valuysky District Court, the foreigner was brought to administrative responsibility for violating the rules of entry into the Russian Federation. The Cameroonian was sentenced to administrative expulsion from Russia in the form of forced departure.

Earlier, Regnum news agency reported that Ukrainian student Sergei Gulko, previously expelled from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) for nationalist publications and attempts to raise money for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, will be expelled from Russia.

At the end of April, Sergei Gulko, a sixth-year student at the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine of Moscow State University, was arrested in Moscow. A Ukrainian citizen who lived in a university dormitory on Lomonosovsky Prospekt was imprisoned for supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine and disobeying the police. The Nikulinsky court of the capital found the young man guilty of public display of Nazi symbols and sentenced him to 12 days of arrest.

Previously arrested for collecting money for the Ukrainian army, former student Gulko was unable to leave for Georgia after being ordered to leave Russia. According to him, Georgia denied him entry without explanation.

Hearing goes off the rails as Ted Cruz accuses Biden official of funding Hamas attack on Israel
[FoxNews] Texas Sen. Ted Cruz blasted Secretary of State Anthony Blinken for failing to crack down on Iran's sanctions avoidance

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz pulled no punches while questioning Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a heated Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Tuesday.

The tense clash between the two began with Cruz blasting the Biden administration's "worst foreign policy disaster of modern times," referencing its handling of Iran and the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, and culminated with the senator accusing the White House of indirectly funding the attack.

"Mr. Secretary, you have presided over the worst foreign policy disaster of modern times," Cruz began. "When Joe Biden became president, he inherited peace and prosperity in the world. We now have two simultaneous wars waging: the worst war in Europe since World War II, and the worst war in the Middle East in 50 years. Both, I believe, were caused by this administration's consistent weakness."

"Your foreign policy is precisely backwards from what a rational American foreign policy should be to our friends and allies. This administration has consistently undermined, weakened and attacked them," he added. "And to our enemies, this administration has shown constant appeasement and indeed has flowed billions of dollars to the enemies of America who want to kill us."

The two clashed over the Biden administration's effort to prevent Israel from attacking Rafah, a city in the Gaza Strip, as part of its efforts to root out Hamas terrorists from among the Palestinians, with Cruz demanding to know whether they offered Israel intelligence on the terrorists if they would hold off attacking.

Blinken denied any such action was taken and attempted to expand on what he said was President Biden's support for Israel, but Cruz stopped him, saying he wasn't interested in a "campaign speech."

Cruz continued to press him, but Blinken called the notion "misleading and wrong," and said the U.S. government shares intelligence if it's available.

Cruz then accused Blinken and the State Department of repeatedly telling Israel "not to kill" Hamas terrorists, citing a tweet he said the department later deleted immediately after the Oct. 7 attack, calling on Israel "not to engage in military retaliation."

"Senator, I was in Israel five days after Oct. 7. I've been there seven times since. No one, starting with President Biden, has done more to make sure they have what they need to defend themselves from Hamas, to deal with the threat," Blinken said, as Cruz pushed back.

"That is simply wrong. … That is ludicrous," Cruz said, asking if the administration had cut off sending weapons to Israel.

Blinken denied the administration had cut off any weapons supplies, but Cruz began to press him on funding for Iran.

Cruz noted that Iran's oil production had increased since Biden had taken office, and that the nation had developed more "ghost" ships to circumvent the sanctions against it and ship the oil.

"This administration desperately wants a new Iran deal. You have been showering cash on Iran from day one," Cruz said, referencing what he said was the administration's "refusal to enforce oil sanctions."

"In a very real sense, this administration, you and President Biden funded the Oct. 7 attacks by flowing $100 billion to a homicidal, genocidal regime that funded those attacks," he added.

Blinken quickly hit back, calling Cruz's statement "profoundly wrong" and "disgraceful," to which the latter responded, "Why?"

"We have gone at Iran repeatedly with more than 600 sanctions applied against them," Blinken said.

"Why are they selling 10 million barrels a day compared to 300,000?" Cruz responded.

Blinken argued Iran was working hard to get around the sanctions, and that the administration was continuing to "go at them" every day despite the country being "determined" to sell more oil.

"They weren't determined when Trump was president," Cruz said.

"It must decide if it wants to take advantage of this opportunity to achieve something sought from its founding," he added.

Blinken faced criticism from the right and left during the session, with Republicans accusing the administration of failing Israel and Democrats

saying it’s doing too little to help civilians in Gaza.

Furious protesters interrupted Blinken as he began his testimony before the Democratic-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee. There were shouts that he has "blood on his hands," and Blinken flinched from a protester who approached him from behind waving a sign that said "criminal" before security officers carried her out of the room.

Earlier on Tuesday, US Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew reiterated that forging formal Israeli-Saudi relations as part of an emerging trilateral deal involving Washington would require a calming of the Gaza war and a discussion of prospects for Paleostinian governance.

"There’s going to have to be some period of quiet, I think, in Gaza, and there’s going to have to be a conversation about how do you deal with the question of the future of Paleostinian governance," Lew said.

"My view is that strategic benefit is worth taking the risk of getting into that conversation about. But that’s a decision that the government of Israel will have to make and the people of Israel will have to make," he told a conference hosted by the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) think-tank.

The United States on Monday described as "near-final" a bilateral defense pact with Saudi Arabia. Once completed, it would be part of a broad deal presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to decide whether to make concessions — including committing to paving the way for a future Paleostinian state — to secure a normalization of ties with Riyadh.

Netanyahu had long promoted such a diplomatic prize, and in the months prior to Hamas
..always the voice of sweet reason...
’s October 7 massacre in southern Israel, was said to have been overseeing intensified efforts to clinch closer military and intelligence ties with Riyadh.

But, seven months into a war with Hamas bandidos Death Eaters in the Gaza Strip, whom Israel swore to eradicate following the October 7 terror onslaught, a ceasefire is elusive and Netanyahu has insisted that it is premature to discuss day-after Paleostinian rule.

"Of course, we want to expand the circle of peace. We haven’t been shy about this," Israeli government spokesperson Tal Heinrich said. "[But] any peace initiative that jeopardizes Israel’s security is not something that we see as real peace."

House Speaker gives Schumer an ultimatum on Netanyahu
[IsraelNationalNews] House Speaker Mike Johnson has presented Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer with an ultimatum: Join his letter inviting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress, or the House will move ahead with an invitation on its own, The Hill reported on Tuesday.
*Snicker* Hardball politics.
Johnson told reporters that his office notified Schumer’s staff the day before that if the Senate leader does not sign the draft invitation for Netanyahu by Tuesday, he will proceed with inviting Netanyahu to address just the House.

The Speaker, however, noted that he would invite senators to attend the speech.

"My office told Senator Schumer’s office yesterday that he needed to sign the joint letter, and if not, we were gonna proceed and invite Netanyahu just to the House, and I’ll send individual invitations to senators," Johnson said, according to The Hill.

Dar arrives in Bishkek to take up Pakistani nationals' concerns after mob violence
[GEO.TV] Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday arrived in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek to discuss the "concerns" of Pak students who among other foreign nationals suffered mob attacks by locals last week.

The visit comes as Pakistain has ramped up evacuations of its students from Bishkek after violent mostly peaceful mobs of locals targeted foreign nationals last week, with over 800 pupils returned to the country so far.

At least five Pak students suffered injuries in the attacks triggered by a brawl between Kyrgyz and Egyptian students, prompting mob attacks on hostels of medical universities and private lodgings of international students, including Paks, in the city.

After reaching Bishkek, FM Dar held a detailed meeting with his Kyrgyz counterpart Kulubaev Zheenbek Moldokanovich.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
'We were all duped' | Report: Egypt changed terms of Gaza ceasefire deal
[IsraelNationalNews] Egyptian intelligence quietly changed the terms of a ceasefire proposal that Israel had already signed off on earlier this month, ultimately scuttling a deal that could have released hostages and Palestinian Arab prisoners, and set a pathway to temporarily end the fighting in Gaza, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing three people familiar with the discussions.
Hamas was never going to agree anyway — they’re just marking time until a divine — or American or Iranian — thumb presses down on the scales, forcing Israel to surrender.
The ceasefire agreement that Hamas said on May 6 it had agreed to was not what the Qataris or the Americans believed had been submitted to Hamas for a potential final review, the sources told the network.

The changes made by Egyptian intelligence, the details of which have not been previously reported, led to a wave of anger and recrimination among officials from the US, Qatar and Israel, and left ceasefire talks at an impasse.
They were at an impasse anyway. Egyptian perfidy just gave Hamas a propaganda point for the Jew-haters of the world.

Smotrich says Israeli army should occupy south Lebanon if Hezbollah doesn't withdraw
[NAHARNET] Israel should not shy away from launching a military takeover of southern Leb
...an Iranian satrapy currently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
if Hezbollah does not withdraw from the border, far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has said.

Speaking at a faction meeting of his far-right Religious Zionism party held, unusually, in northern Israel, Smotrich demanded that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu make a clear announcement of a plan to deal with Hezbollah’s threat, saying that if necessary, Hezbollah must be dealt with through military action.

"A public ultimatum must be issued to Hezbollah that they completely stop firing and withdraw all forces to beyond the Litani River," said Smotrich.

Promoting a plan reminiscent of Israel’s security zone in southern Lebanon in the years following the 1982 invasion, Smotrich warned: "If the ultimatum is not fully met, the IDF (Israeli army) will launch an assault deep in Lebanese territory to defend the northern communities, including ground entry and Israeli military takeover of the southern Lebanese area."

"The way to bring the (evacuated) residents home to the north is through a military decision with a devastating assault on Hezbollah, its infrastructure and the destruction of its power," he said.

Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gazoo

there.

In response, Israel has threatened to go to war to force Hezbollah away from the border if it does not retreat and continues to threaten northern settlements, from where some 70,000 residents were evacuated to avoid the fighting.

International efforts including by La Belle France and the U.S. to resolve the matter through a diplomatic solution have so far failed, as Hezbollah has maintained it will not enter into any tangible discussions with Israel until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.

-based Al Jazeera within Israel, confiscating its equipment, banning its broadcasts and blocking its websites.

After Israel seized the AP equipment, the Biden administration, journalism organizations and an Israeli opposition leader condemned the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and pressured it to reverse the decision.

"As soon as we learned about the reports, the White House and the State Department immediately engaged with the Government of Israel at high levels to express our serious concern and ask them to reverse this action," said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the National Security Council.

Israel’s communications minister, Shlomo Karhi, said late Tuesday (May. 21) on the social platform X: "I have now ordered to cancel the action and return the equipment to the AP."

Karhi said the defense ministry will undertake a review of news outlets’ positioning of live video of Gaza. Officials hadn’t previously told AP the positioning of its live camera was an issue. Instead, they repeatedly noted that the images appeared in real-time on Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera is one of thousands of AP customers, and it receives live video from AP and other news organizations.
Wouldn’t it be fun if Israel expelled all AP stringers, staff, and freelancers?
Courtesy of badanov, a Google-translated Regnum article adds:
According to the AP, the Sderot office was ordered on May 16 to stop broadcasting a general view of the northern Gaza Strip, but staff refused. On May 21, in the afternoon, employees of the Israeli Ministry of Communications arrived at the agency’s office, seized the equipment and interrupted the broadcast. Representatives of the AR were given a notice of violation of the law on foreign broadcasters, certified by Israeli Minister of Communications Shlomo Karya, since the AR's live broadcasts are used by the Qatari TV channel Al Jazeera.

“The Associated Press condemns in the strongest terms the Israeli government's actions in shutting down our long-running live broadcast of Gaza and confiscating AP equipment. The shutdown was not caused by an information component, but by the Israeli government’s abuse of the new law on foreign media broadcasting,” said Lauren Easton, a spokeswoman for the American agency, in a statement.

Easton appealed to Israeli authorities to return the equipment and restore broadcasting.

#1  How is it that AP can get high US government officials to intervene in a simple property dispute? Cops will tell you it's a civil matter and to sue the other party.
But how does a media organization have so much power it can do this kind of thing? Who the hell runs them?

WHO chief asks Israel to ease restrictions on Gaza medical aid
[GEO.TV] The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) called on Tuesday for Israel to lift restrictions on aid into Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
saying that the primary pipeline for emergency medical aid into the enclave from Egypt had been cut off.

"At a time when the people of Gaza are facing starvation, we urge Israel to lift the blockade and let aid through. Without more aid flowing into Gaza we cannot sustain our lifesaving support of hospitals," Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a presser in Geneva.

#2  Get a clue alert! It will just be stolen and used for Hamas and its allies!

"Close to three-fourths of the humanitarian aid transported from a new $320 million floating pier built by the U.S. military off the Gaza coast was stolen on Saturday en route to a U.N. warehouse, Reuters reported on Tuesday."

In complete secrecy: Egypt altered the hostage deal terms before handing to Hamas - report
[JPost] Qatari officials have denied involvement with the altered deal, placing the blame squarely on Egypt.

Egypt altered ceasefire terms before handing agreements to Hamas, three anonymous sources told CNN News in a report published on Tuesday.

According to the report, Egypt changed the details of the deal submitted to the Hamas terrorist organization after it had been signed by Israel and before reaching Hamas. It was also reported that this move led to great anger among Israel, the US, and Qatar against the Egyptians.

One source even claimed that the Egyptians "deceived us all."
Who was behind the altered agreement?

A senior Egyptian intelligence official named Ahmed Abdel Khalek was reportedly responsible for the change. A source claimed that Khalek had been telling Hamas one thing and Israel another.

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani assured Mossad that Egypt had acted alone in making the changes, two of the informants told CNN.

The ceasefire deal announced by Hamas on May 6 had not been the deal constructed by the US or Qatar, the sources said.

An Egyptian source told CNN that Egypt had received Hamas’s response and relayed it to Israel.

The LF leader also stressed that the committee in its latest statement "did not call for a (Speaker Nabih) Berri-style dialogue, but rather for consultations in the vein of what the Moderation bloc had suggested."

"We will do everything necessary to prevent the election of this candidate on whom Bassil and Hezbollah will agree," Geagea vowed.

Thousands of Iranians surround late president's coffin as 5-day mourning starts
[AFRICANEWS] Thousands of Iranians began gathering Tuesday (May. 21) for 5 days of public mourning.

A vehicle driving slowly through the northwestern City of Tabriz, carried the bodies of late president Ebrahim Raisi, the Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, a senior holy man, a Revolutionary Guard official and three crew members.

Tabriz is the closest major city to the site of Sunday's helicopter crash that killed all eight men.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...>
, who has the final say in the theocracy, named, as the law provides, the first vice president as interim leader.

He expressed condolences to the families of victims

The presidential election is set to be held on June 28.

The government on Monday announced an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has offered no cause for the crash. The helicopter fell in mountainous terrain in a sudden, intense fog.

After processions across the country, the late president is set to be buried at his birthplace (Mashhad), on Thursday (May.23).

Raisi, 63, was viewed as a protege of Khamenei.

The president's body would be transferred to his birthplace Mashhad, where his funeral will be held on Thursday.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei expressed condolences to the families of victims.

#7  I don’t expect this to be an Iranian Camelot situation, but Raisi is probably more popular among the Iranian sheeple now that he has assumed room temperature. They will probably muster up a crazy sized crowd for the funeral. I am not sure that the funeral will be indicative of the actual breakdown among the Iranian people with regard to wanting freedom. I don’t expect to see counter protests as the regime thugs will be extra brutal in breaking things up. It will be interesting to see which countries send which reps to pay respects.

#14  interestingly, when Khomeini died in 1989, his body was taken from the viewing area to the cemetery by a Bell Helicopter.

The coffin was pulled out of the helicopter by mourners and the body fell out of the coffin and mourners grabbed pieces of the burial shroud.

Khomeini had to be taken back to Tehran for a second burial shroud and related prep and then to the cemetery again where there was an augmented squad of national guards to keep order.

Syrian first lady Asma al-Assad diagnosed with leukemia, president's office says
[NEWARAB] Syrian first lady Asma al-Assad has been diagnosed with leukemia, the office of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
announced Tuesday.

The president's wife was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia "after presenting with several symptoms and following a comprehensive series of medical tests and examinations," the statement said.

She will "adhere to a specialised treatment protocol that includes stringent infection prevention measures" and "will temporarily withdraw from all direct engagements" as part of the treatment plan, it added.

Acute myeloid leukemia is an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and the blood.

Asma al-Assad has previously been treated for breast cancer. In August 2019, she announced that she was "completely" free of the disease a year after her diagnosis.

Born and raised in the United Kingdom, although her family is originally from central Syria, the first lady is a powerful and divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
figure. She is under western sanctions and has been a highly controversial figure in the course of the 13-year Syrian conflict.

She was an investment banker before quitting to marry the then-newly minted President Bashir al-Assad, in 2000. She has since maintained a public role, promoting civil and charity groups, but has been accused of using her British education and Western style to try to mask the brutality of her husband’s crackdown on dissent.
