Rantburg.com is moving to a new server — please donate!
by Chris Covert
Backend Mechanic
Purveyor/Curator of Russian news (Russia Desk)

On August 1st, I will purchase the first six month block for a new server. It will reside with a server provider I have used for more than 20 years. They are absolutely reliable, and this new setup will ensure instances of loss of service will be far less frequent and of less duration.

The new server will be the permanent home of Rantburg.com going forward. It will be hardened and sit atop a network, which helps mitigate DDOS attacks.

Data of the new server:
  • 2 x Intel Xeon E5530 Quad-Core CPU

  • 32GB RAM-DDR3

  • 1x 1000GB SSD HDD 1x 500GB SSD HDD -- Hardware RAID

It will take about three weeks to set it up. I plan for it to be fully working by September 1st.

  • By August 8th: Internals installed and tested, including the database

  • By August 17th: Firewall installed and tested

  • By August 25th: Tests for all the scripts that mods and regulars use to post articles, including setting up database backups completed.

  • On August 28: The Rantburg.com name will begin to propagate to the new server. In that time -- using the rantburg.com name -- service will be non existent to spotty. I will have an alternate name set up -- newrantburg.1dogstar.net -- which will ensure continuation of the service until the rantburg.com name is fully propagated.

Fred deserves a lion's share of the credit for keeping Rantburg.com going on his dedicated box with a broadband set up, but as I learned years ago, the quality of service is far less than you should expect on a professionally managed network.

It’s time for a major upgrade, one that, despite its monthly cost, will relieve Fred of the financial burden of maintaining his home service. The new server per month costs a lot less than the current service does.

The server will be a FreeBSD server, a dedicated Unix software suite I have used for many years. The backup server I developed for Rantburg.com - rantburg.1dogstar.net - uses FreeBSD, and the service has been working flawlessly for a year.

But we do require your help. I will invest the first six months of the new service; thereafter net of my costs for the new server, the money will go to Fred.

This time for this bleg, however, all monies go to Fred.

Fred maintains a Paypal account — link on the right side bar. He also has a Zelle account. If you email him and ask real nice, he will give you an address, if you want to send a check.
I tried the PayPal button for the first time instead of mailing a check — I don’t want badanov to be out of pocket after he fronted the cost in addition to doing all that work for free. Such things are very exciting for me. ;-)

#4  We don’t have a following capability, sorry. But you can ask someone to meet you in the O Club chatroom — which is for everyone, not just whatever officers would be here — and exchange information there, if the other person is willing. Posts there age out and disappear instead of being archived like here in Rantburg proper.

About gifs and things, I don’t know, but tweets have Embed and YouTube has Share.

#15  Rantburg’s code could use a bit of cleaning up, ‘tis true. Something badanov and Fred will look into after the current move is complete. When they’re ready we’ll put out a call for the list, and get it all done at once so that it all dovetails neatly instead of each fix cascading other problems.

At that point we’ll point out limitations deliberately built in to prevent spam and other malicious actors — because of the sandbox we play in, there are bad people out there who would do serious harm if it weren’t for the security precautions Fred has worked to improve upon since the early days of stopping script kiddie DDOS attacks on the Burg. Y’all remember the epically annoying temper tantrums of little JUSTICE from Saudi Arabia?

A convicted sex offender named Suliaman Abdul-Hadi has been arrested in Vancouver, Wash. for allegedly grooming and raping underage girls
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
…before r—ping them. The youngest victim is only 12.
Not his first rodeo. Andy Ngo in the Post Millennial:
Court documents state that the 12-year-old victim was brought to a hospital on July 11 for a sexual assault exam. The minor told authorities that a male suspect had purchased alcohol for her and another unidentified 15-year-old girl, and then raped them. This allegedly occurred on more than one occasion, the victim said.

Investigators learned the man was Abdul-Hadi, a level III sex offender who is on GPS monitoring and restricted from being around minors, and launched an investigation.

On July 18, Vancouver police executed a search warrant at Abdul-Hadi's residence located in the 2900 block of NE 143rd Avenue in Vancouver. The defendant attempted to flee the residence but was confronted by a police K9 team and taken into custody. VPD received assistance from an Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS), detectives from the Children's Justice Center/Elder Justice Center, Digital Evidence Cybercrime Unit (DECU), and the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU).

Court records show that Abdul-Hadi is a repeat criminal sex offender with charges and allegations dating back to 2016, when he was a juvenile. During that year, he was accused of sexually assaulting a male student at St. John's Military School in Kansas. In 2020, Abdul-Hadi was convicted in Washington state of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes and third-degree rape of a child.

On May 6, 2024, Abdul-Hadi pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender and was subsequently sentenced to 30 days in jail, 30 days of work crew, and 12 months of probation, court records show. He failed to inform his parole officer when he moved into his home on 143rd Avenue, resulting in the online sex offender registry not being updated, according to court documents.

This investigation remains ongoing, and detectives believe there may be several other minor victims. Authorities said Abdul-Hadi targets maiden of tender yearss between the ages of 11 and 17.

Stavropol resident gets long sentence in case of Basayev's attack on Dagestan
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.[KavkazUzel]
Stavropol resident Rustam Yarbuldyev, who was found by the court to have participated in the attack on the Botlikh region of Dagestan as part of Basayev’s group, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Another jihadi from the time before Chechnya’s jihadis formally pledged to Al Qaeda, becoming the Caucasus Emirate. At the rate the Spetznaz hunters find thrm and bring them to justice, this could go on for another decade or two.
As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, in June 2023, the FSB reported the arrest of Rustam Yarbuldyev in Stavropol Krai in connection with the attack on the Botlikh District of Dagestan in 1999. In September 2024, the case went to court.

On August 7, 1999, more than 1,000 armed fighters from Chechnya under the leadership of  Shamil Basayev  and Jordanian  Amir Khattab
…that year they called themselves the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade (IIPB). They apparently peaked — briefly — at 10,000 turbans…
entered the territory of Dagestan. Fighting continued in the republic for more than a month. Only on September 15, 1999, the Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev reported that the territory of Dagestan had been completely liberated, according to the "Kavkazsky Uzel" report " Invasion of Militants in Dagestan (1999)".

The Southern District Military Court has sentenced Stavropol resident Rustam Yarbuldyev in the case of the 1999 attack on military personnel in Dagestan as part of Shamil Basayev's group. He will spend 13 years in a maximum security penal colony, TASS reported today, citing the FSB Directorate for Stavropol Krai.

According to the investigation and the court, "Yarbuldyev, as part of an illegal armed group led by Basayev, participated in an attack on servicemen of the Russian Ministry of Defense in the Botlikh District of the Republic of Dagestan in August 1999," the report says.

Yarbuldyev was found guilty of participating in an armed gang (Part 2 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), armed rebellion (Article 279 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and attempting to kill a serviceman (Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), Vesti.ru reported.

As follows from the case file on the website of the Southern District Military Court, Yarbuldyev's case was heard from September 2024, 26 hearings took place, and the verdict was announced on July 30.

Sweden jihadist jailed for life over Jordanian pilot burned alive
[IsraelTimes] A Stockholm court hands down a life term to Swedish jihadist Osama Krayem over the 2015 murder of a Jordanian pilot burned alive by the Islamic State group in Syria.

The Swedish court is the first to try a person over the infamous killing that sparked outrage around the world.

Judge Anna Liljenberg Gullesjo says “the investigation has shown that the defendant was at the execution site, uniformed and armed, and allowed himself to be filmed.”

Although video evidence showed that another man lit the fire, the judge says the “defendant’s actions contributed so significantly to the death of the victim that he should be considered a perpetrator.”

Krayem, who is serving long prison sentences for his role in the Paris and Brussels attacks in 2015 and 2016, was given a life sentence for “serious war crimes and terrorist crimes.”

On December 24, 2014, an aircraft belonging to the Royal Jordanian Air Force crashed in Syria. The pilot, Maaz al-Kassasbeh, was captured the same day by ISIS fighters near the central city of Raqqa and was burned alive in a cage sometime before February 3, 2015, when a slickly produced video of the gruesome killing was published.

Gullesjo says Krayem’s actions consisted of “guarding the victim both before and during the execution and taking him to the cage where he was set alight while still alive.”

IDF footage shows apparent Hamas attempt to ambush, kidnap soldiers
[X]

…armed with assault rifles and RPGs, sought to kidnap troops.

The videos show that the squad of operatives positioned themselves on the side of an IDF logistics road in Khan Younis and hid themselves underneath blankets to ambush the Israeli forces.

The operatives were spotted by troops of the Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion using a drone, and they called in an Israeli Air Force Hermes 450 UAV to strike them. However, as the videos show, the operatives fled back into a nearby tunnel before being targeted.

As the operatives withdrew, the IDF also identified a Hamas drone flying over the area, apparently to provide intel to the squad, according to a military probe.

The IDF is also investigating the leaked videos that have circulated online since yesterday.

At least one arrested as some Tel Aviv protesters become unruly
[IsraelTimes] At least one person has been arrested as police ordered protesters leaving an anti-war demonstration in Habima Square to clear off Ben Tziyon Boulevard, where they began marching toward the central King George Street.

Protesters sat down and lit a fire on King George. Police shoved some of them to the ground.

Hundreds in Tel Aviv demand end to war: ‘It’s a duty to refuse’

[IsraelTimes] About 1,000 people gather at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square for an anti-war protest organized by an Israeli-Palestinian coalition of peace activists and human rights groups.

Speakers also assail Israel’s actions in the West Bank and the release of a settler accused of having shot dead Palestinian activist Odeh Hathaleen this week, even as Hathaleen’s relatives remain in prison.

In a rare occurrence for a Tel Aviv protest of this size, one of the speakers at the demonstration, actor Yossi Zabari, explicitly accuses Israel of genocide — “the word that frightens us more than the deed itself,” he says.

Protesters hoist pictures of emaciated Gazan children and Israeli hostages. A large screen on stage reads, in Hebrew and Arabic, “Enough with the killing, enough with the starvation, enough with the abandonment.”

“Right now in Gaza, there is a little girl hungry for food and a little boy thirsty for water,” says Rula Daoud, a co-leader of the binational socialist group Standing Together. “I don’t know how much energy the boy and girl have left in their bodies to shout, but I know I can shout for them.”

She calls for a joint Jewish-Arab struggle “to sabotage life here until the government breaks.”

In Beit Hanoun for 5th time, officers say Hamas battalion to be destroyed ‘within a week’
[IsraelTimes] ToI joins Givati Brigade in northeast Gazan town, where terror operatives have remained holed up for nearly 2 years; inside tunnel, troops kill Hamas company commander

It is now the fifth time that the Israel Defense Forces is operating in the town of Beit Hanoun, located on the northeastern edge of the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip, just across from Israel’s southern city of Sderot.

But this time — almost two years into the ground offensive — IDF commanders say their work to destroy Hamas
..the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,...
’s crippled and surrounded "battalion" in Beit Hanoun is almost done.

The Hamas battalion in Beit Hanoun now only consists of a handful of operatives, and the vast majority of the terror group’s tunnels in the town have been demolished, according to officers.

"I believe that within a week we can finish, and what I mean by finish is that there are no more tunnels," said Col. Netanel Shamaka, the commander of the Givati Infantry Brigade, to news hounds during an escorted visit to Beit Hanoun on Wednesday.

In the past two months, the military has razed nearly every single structure in Beit Hanoun, amid a hunt for Hamas’s tunnels and other infrastructure in the area.

No hostages are believed by the IDF to be held by Hamas here.

"The mission isn’t to destroy buildings for the sake of it; the mission is to destroy Hamas infrastructure," Shamaka said.

"Maybe 10 buildings will remain standing [when we finish], which belong to civilians and there are no tunnel entrances in their homes," he said.

The Givati commander said that in Beit Hanoun, "everywhere we dug we found tunnels."

One main tunnel route ran across Beit Hanoun, underneath schools, medical clinics, homes and other civilian sites, with dozens of small underground routes branching off it, Shamaka said.

The main tunnel, which had entrances underneath the homes of all the Hamas commanders in the town, also connected Beit Hanoun with Beit Lahiya to the west and to Jabalia to the south, he said.

When the IDF launched the fresh offensive in Beit Hanoun, troops reached the tunnel’s junctions and cut off the routes leading outside the town, surrounding the few dozen Hamas operatives not only above ground, but also below it.

"We are locating, mapping [the tunnels out] and destroying them. This led to the elimination of many bully boyz who were hiding underground," Shamaka said.

During attempts to uncover the tunnel routes, combat engineers killed — almost by accident — a Hamas company commander who had been wanted since the October 7, 2023, onslaught, alongside other operatives in the Beit Hanoun Battalion.

After digging down and hitting the tunnel, troops of the 7107th Reserve Combat Engineering Battalion dropped an explosive charge inside.

The blast killed Mohammed Sahwil, a company commander in the Beit Hanoun Battalion; Akram Abu Jarad, a platoon commander; and several other operatives.

Their bodies were only located later when the combat engineers sent down a drone to inspect the tunnel, according to IDF officers. Inside the tunnel, the troops also recovered weapons and intelligence documents.

"We carried out several tactical actions to kill the enemy in its tunnels. This is one of the results," Lt. Col. "Gimmel," the commander of the 7107th Battalion — who can only be identified by his first initial in Hebrew due to security concerns — told news hounds at the site of the razed tunnel.

"A tunnel ran here under our feet, with living terrorists, only a few days ago. We identified their elimination and destroyed the entire tunnel," he said.

The IDF believes there are only four or five remaining terror operatives in Beit Hanoun, as the majority were either killed during the fighting or fled, like the battalion commander, Hussein Fayyad.

Before the war, the Beit Hanoun Battalion — like the other 23 Hamas battalions across the Strip — consisted of over 1,000 operatives.

Fayyad, the Beit Hanoun Battalion commander, was targeted in a recent strike, but the IDF is unsure if he was killed. Previously, the military declared him dead in a strike, only to backtrack after he was seen out in public during a ceasefire.

"What kept Hamas standing for a year and 10 months in Beit Hanoun was only the tunnels," Shamaka said. "[The operatives] quickly went down into the tunnels that [Hamas] dug and hid there. The moment we managed to reach the main routes, they started to come out and we struck them," he said.

"Unfortunately, in the past year, [the Beit Hanoun Battalion] caused a not-small number of casualties to our forces, and the assessment is that within a week we will be finished with Beit Hanoun," Shamaka said.

But he stressed that nothing is absolute. There still may be tunnels that the military is unaware of, and "bully boyz could come from Gaza City overground" to Beit Hanoun and launch an attack on Israel.

"I’ll need to be here" to prevent that, the Givati commander added.

IDF confirms airstrikes on Hezbollah ‘strategic weapons’ sites in south Lebanon, Beqaa Valley
[IsraelTimes] The IDF confirms completing a wave of airstrikes against Hezbollah’s “strategic weapons” manufacturing and storage infrastructure in southern Lebanon and in the eastern Beqaa Valley a short while ago.

The targets included a facility used to manufacture explosives and an underground site where Hezbollah built and stored precision-guided missiles, the army says.

The strikes were carried out after the IDF says it had identified efforts by Hezbollah to restore the sites. The facility in the Beqaa Valley has been targeted by the IDF several times before.

Hezbollah’s activities “constitute a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” the IDF adds.

Defense minister confirms IDF striking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon

[IsraelTimes] Defense Minister Israel Katz confirms that the IDF is striking Hezbollah sites in Lebanon, saying a precision missile manufacturing facility in Lebanon’s eastern Beqaa Valley was targeted.

The site, Hezbollah’s largest weapons production plant, has been targeted several times by the IDF, including since the November ceasefire.

According to Katz, several other sites where Hezbollah was working to restore its capabilities were also targeted.

“Any attempt by the terrorist organization to restore, reestablish itself, or pose a threat will be met with uncompromising force,” Katz adds.
