NYC shooting: NYPD officer killed, 4 others dead in midtown building home to Blackstone, NFL
[FoxNews] FAST FACTS
  • Five people were killed, including a police officer, when a gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire at a midtown Manhattan office building that is home to the Blackstone investment firm and the headquarters for the NFL.

  • NYC Mayor Eric Adams said the shooter was "neutralized" at the scene.

  • The NYPD was clearing each floor in the massive tower to endure everyone was safe and there were no other shooters.

NYC GUNMAN BEGAN FIRING IN BUILDING LOBBY, POLICE SAY
Security video shows the gunman who killed multiple people at an office building in midtown Manhattan entering the lobby and immediately opening fire and striking several people, including a police officer, authorities said Monday.

He then shot a security guard taking cover behind a desk with an M4 assault rifle, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, then waited for an elevator and allowed a woman to exit unharmed before going to the 33rd floor.

He then shot and killed another person before shooting himself, police said.

Tamura, who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Nevada, killed four people and wounded another.

***********

A lone gunman walked into a midtown Manhattan office building Monday afternoon and opened fire, killing four people – including an NYPD officer – before turning the gun on himself.

Speaking at a press conference later Monday, NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the shooter as Shane Temura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident with a history of mental health issues.

Tisch said Tamura had driven across state lines, with his vehicle having been seen as recently as 4:24 p.m. Monday in Columbia, New Jersey, not long before he unleashed a barrage of gunfire.

***************

The slain New York City police officer was who killed by a gunman in a Manhattan office building immigrated to the U.S. from Bangladesh and left behind a pregnant wife, authorities said.

Didarul Islam, 36, had been on the force for four years before he was gunned down Monday evening. He was a married father to two young boys and his wife is pregnant with their third child, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who was assigned to the NYPD's 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was one of two uniformed officers in the Park Avenue high-rise when the shooting occurred.

"He put himself in harms way," Tisch said. "He made the ultimate sacrifice."

"He died as he lived: a hero," she added.

Both of the officers were working there as part of the paid detail program, which allows companies to hire uniformed officers as extra security, Tisch said.

New York Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer, said he met with Islam's family.

"This was his dad's only son," he said. "It is unimaginable to experience a loss of this magnitude."

#8  Red State:

On Tuesday, the NYPD shared excerpts of what appears to be a suicide note from Tamura, who was a former football player but not with the NFL:

Investigators on Tuesday were focusing on whether a gunman had been targeting the headquarters of the National Football League when he burst into an office tower in Midtown Manhattan and killed four people, including a police officer, in a rare episode of deadly mass violence in the city.

Mayor Eric Adams said on Tuesday morning that the authorities “have reason to believe that he was focused on the N.F.L.,” which has offices at the tower, 345 Park Avenue. A three-page note found on the gunman mentioned the league, as well as claims that the man had suffered from the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., from playing football, the police said. It asks that his brain be examined for signs of C.T.E. and accuses the league of concealing the dangers of the game.

Here's more from the NYT:

Mr. Tamura shot himself in the chest, rather than the head.

“Study my brain please,” the note said. “I’m sorry.”

The second of the four murder victims has also been identified:

Blackstone said in a statement to USA TODAY that Wesley LePatner, a senior managing director, was killed in the shooting.

"We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePatner, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue," the statement said. "Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed."

JD Vance just WENT OFF on the violent mob that attacked two men and a middle-aged woman at the Cincinnati Jazz Festival
[X] Responding to this story from yesterday
…sucker punched a middle-aged woman. That person ought to go to jail for a very long time - and frankly, he's lucky there weren't some better people around because they would've handled it themselves."

He's 100% right. Thank God for the moral clarity of JD Vance.

Local news report:
Cincinnati police: 5 charged, more anticipated after 'violent fight' downtown this weekend

[WCPO] Five people have been charged after what local officials called a "violent mostly peaceful fight" in downtown Cincinnati early Saturday morning, Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said Monday afternoon.

Theetge said police received one phone call about a fight at the intersection of 4th and Elm streets at 3:06 a.m. Saturday. By the time officers arrived at 3:12 a.m., Theetge said all of the people injured in the fight were still at the scene, but many others had left.

While investigating witness accounts and videos posted online, Theetge said police were able to identify all victims and suspects involved in the fight. Five people were charged, and Theetge said police "anticipate more" charges, calling for people involved to turn themselves in to police.

"It would be in their best interest to come turn themselves in at one of our police districts," Theetge said.

In a nearly 2 1/2 minute video shared on Facebook, dozens of people are seen in a fight in the street. The video was posted after 3 a.m. early Saturday morning.

At one point, a man is chased into the street before he is kicked and stomped on by several others. That man is then eventually helped up by others before he collapses again in the street. When he's helped up a second time, the man has a bloody nose and visible scrapes on his face.

After the man leaves the frame of the video, a woman punches another woman in the back of the head. After the woman who was punched backs away, a man punches her straight in the face, causing her to collapse to the ground. It appears the woman was knocked unconscious, and blood begins to pour from her mouth. A group of people then helps the woman as she regains consciousness before the video ends.

While Theetge said the videos online do not provide the full story, she did not say what police believe led to the fight.

Hear more from Pureval and other city and national leaders in the video below:

Theetge said anyone who "placed their hands on somebody in an attempt to cause harm" will face consequences.

"I don't care which side of the incident, the fight, they were on ... that's unacceptable," Theetge said.

The police chief said officers are also looking into whether some of the people involved were overserved at local bars or restaurants, saying it is clear alcohol played a part in the fight.

Theetge did not state what charges have been filed, nor did she identify those charged. CPD's investigation into the fight is ongoing.
Local station WLWT has more details about the fight here, and points out that Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno and Elon Musk posted about it. Posted in response to Mr. Musk’s tweet is the fullest video I’ve seen:.

Cincinnati mayoral candidate, VP Vance's half-brother, slams city leadership after brutal beatdown
[FoxNews] Mayoral candidate Cory Bowman claims police are handcuffed by current leadership as downtown crime surges.

"People don't even see the sense in calling 911 anymore," said Cory Bowman, who is also Vice President JD Vance's half-brother in addition to being a candidate for city mayor.

Bowman placed second in a nonpartisan primary race in May. He will square off with incumbent Mayor Aftab Pureval in November. His thoughts on citizens seeing no sense in calling 911 came after Police Chief Teresa Theetge said in a press conference that only one person called police while the attack was ongoing.

"That is unacceptable to not call the police," she said during a Monday press conference. "Traffic was horrendous. People saw this. They were fighting in front of traffic. Why didn't people call us?"

Bowman said that with police handcuffed by the current city leadership, he is not surprised by the events of early Saturday morning, which took place on the corner of Fourth and Elm Street outside a nightclub in the city's downtown business district.

He told Fox News Digital that crime in the city not only spikes during the summer months, but has increased over time as a whole, which he claims the local government and media deny.

"Whenever May and June was rolling around, there was all these press conferences and all these statements from the media that was stating that crime is down, crime is down," he said.

"Well, the reality of it is that anybody that lived downtown knew that because of snow and because of rain, that maybe some things were being prolonged, but once the warmer months came about, the policies … not enforcing the law is actually going to allow just a free-for-all in the city," he continued.

Bowman said police officers are voicing their concerns to him about not being able to do their jobs, and he noted that the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) is understaffed to begin with.

"And then what happens is that these police officers don't see a point in actually booking the criminals, because there's actually prosecutors in the city that have a revolving door mentality that the criminals go in, and then they're released on the streets," he said.

"And so many of these officers don't even book people because they know they're just gonna be back on the street next week. So they sit in their cars, and they try to do the best they can. They have a heart for the city, but they're being hindered by the policies that are in place."

Ken Kober is a 25-year veteran of the Cincinnati Police Department. He echoed Bowman's sentiments about the police department's hands being tied, and told Fox News Digital that the beating is something that "as a society, we cannot accept."

"It's just nothing more than a savage attack on a couple of people. I mean you see somebody that's completely defenseless, trying to cover their head in their face, and they're just being stomped on by multiple individuals," Kober said.

Kober was upset that the positives of the weekend, the Cincinnati Reds winning three home games and the storied Cincinnati Jazz Festival, were overshadowed by the vicious viral video.

He, too, blamed local officials for increasing crime.

"We have a problem with judges that don't wanna hold people accountable, and when they know that there aren't gonna to be any consequences for their actions is when people are gonna go out and we're gonna see incidents like what happened Saturday morning," he said.

Leading German antisemite who moved from left-wing terrorism to neo-Nazism dies at 89
[IsraelTimes] Horst Mahler was once legal counsel for Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld before cofounding the anti-Israel Red Army Faction; he later turned to far-right extremism and Holocaust denial

One of Germany’s most notorious postwar antisemitic agitators has died at 89.

Horst Mahler, who founded the German left-wing terrorist group Red Army Faction in 1970 and later championed neo-Nazi
...adherents of a philosophy that was seen even at the time as pure evil, which makes them either consciously purely evil, or attention-seeking ratbags. Pick one, or both....
s, died in a Berlin hospital on Sunday, according to his attorney, Jan Dollwetzel. Dollwetzel confirmed a statement from the far-right party Die Heimat, or The Homeland, which was formerly the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party of Germany.

Mahler spent much of his adult life in and out of jail. Initially, it was his left-wing extremism that landed him behind bars. But he made a dramatic about-face in the 1990s and remained a committed right-wing murderous Moslem to the end.

Mahler was born in 1936 in what is now Poland. The family moved to Berlin after World War II. His father, a dentist, did away with himself in 1949, reportedly suffering from depression. Mahler studied law and became active in the 1960s West German student movement, representing left-wing activists. Among his clients was Beate Klarsfeld, the famed Nazi hunter, who faced charges stemming from her aggressive activism against German officials with a Nazi past.

He co-founded the Red Army Faction in 1970 with the now-infamous Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Ulrike Meinhof, helping them organize bank robberies and terrorist training, and helping plan Baader’s escape from jail. Mahler was arrested that same year and served 10 years in prison, during which time he distanced himself from the left-extremist scene. He was able to reestablish his credentials as a lawyer with help from Gerhard Schröder, who later became the German chancellor.

His period of respectability did not last long. In the 1990s Mahler turned toward the radical right, later joining the NPD, and represented them against legal challenges by the German federal government.

In 2004 he himself was tried for incitement after telling journalists that hatred of Jews was "completely normal" and a "sign of mental health."

In 2007, he told the Jewish publicist Michel Friedman, in a controversial interview for Vanity Fair magazine, that "Hitler
...late Fuehrer of Germany, founder of the Third Reich, currently communing with his pals Himmler and Heydrich. He is reincarnated every few days, sometimes every few hour if it's an election year, as a politician somebody doesn't like...
was the liberator of the German people."

That same year, Mahler was sentenced to six months in jail for raising his arm in the illegal "Hitler salute" to greet his jailers while serving a previous sentence.

In 2009, he was convicted of incitement of hate for posting Holocaust denial material on the internet and distributing antisemitic CDs calling for violence against Jews.

Ultimately, Mahler’s license to practice law was permanently revoked.

He was serving several combined prison sentences when he was released due to serious illness in 2015. Once free, he allegedly continued to give talks to neo-Nazi audiences. According to Die Zeit, a leading German newspaper, in January 2017 he spoke on such topics as "Jewry is the real enemy" and a so-called plan by Jews to destroy the German people.

Soon afterward, wanted by the authorities, Mahler fled to Hungary and appealed to Prime Minister Viktor Orban for asylum in a public letter and video, referring to him as the "Fuhrer" of the Hungarian Nation. Instead of accepting him, Hungary honored Germany’s request for extradition.

Mahler was sent back to serve out his sentence, which he completed in 2020.

The threat of further jail time never appeared to dampen his antisemitic hate speech. During his final stint behind bars, Mahler wrote letters in which he raged about "foreign Jewish rule" and the "creation of the Holocaust narrative." He said he considered himself a "prisoner of war," the victim of "Jewish councils."

Such statements were among the evidence gathered for what might have been his last trial, set for 2023. That trial was suspended due to his declining health.

Mahler’s trajectory shocked many in Germany at the time, but now seems like a warning sign about contemporary politics to some who tracked his antics.

"Horst Mahler personified the way that antisemitism crosses ideological boundaries and can appeal to different, ostensibly opposing, murderous Moslem movements," a spokesperson for the British Jewish watchdog organization Community Security Trust told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. CST recently collaborated with the nonprofit Hope Not Hate on a study of connections between the two extreme camps in the United Kingdom.

"Even though on the surface the far right and far left are enemies, they share a contempt for liberal democracy and a conspiratorial view of the world in which Jews, or Zionists, are seen as an obstacle to their political objectives," the spokesperson said. "Given this shared anti-Jewish worldview, Mahler’s political migration from far left to far right is not as uncommon as people might think."

Record-sized man-eating great white shark discovered in US
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] A record-sized male white shark has been discovered off the coast of Nantucket Island in the US state of Massachusetts. This was reported by the local publication MassLive.
Conservation works. Sharks demonstrate indeterminate growth — they have no final size, but keep growing as long as they live. Record size for a given species means record age — whale sharks for instance, have been reported at 150 years and nearly 62’ long.
"Researchers have spotted the largest male Atlantic great white shark ever recorded by the nonprofit OCEARCH off the coast of Nantucket. The adult male, nicknamed 'Contender,' measures an impressive 4.2 m (13 ft) in length and weighs about 750 kg (1,650 lbs), " the publication states.

Earlier, researchers from OCEARCH equipped the marine predator with a sensor to track its movements. Before appearing in Nantucket, the shark traveled from the coast of Florida to North Carolina (about 1 thousand km)

At the end of June, athletes from the Fishing Sports Federation noticed dangerous mako sharks in the Ussuri Bay in Primorsky Krai, which often attack people. Usually, this type of shark appears in these parts only in August, but this year the water in the bay warmed up to 22 °C, so the dangerous predators swam there already in June.

Mako are considered the fastest among sharks. During their throws, their speed can reach 80 km/h. This allows predators to jump out of the water for several meters. Representatives of this species reach four meters in length and weigh about 500 kg.

China may gain greater control of Panama Canal after BlackRock deal misses deadline
[FoxNews] President Donald Trump previously warned about Chinese influence over the strategic waterway that the US completed in 1914

China may soon gain greater influence over the Panama Canal following the collapse of a proposed deal between U.S.-based BlackRock and Hong Kong’s CK Hutchison, which had initially sparked tensions with Beijing.

The original agreement would have transferred control of dozens of international ports — including two in Panama — to a consortium involving BlackRock. The deal was reportedly welcomed by former President Donald Trump, who voiced support for reducing Chinese influence over the canal and even floated the idea of the U.S. "taking back" the strategic waterway.

However, Beijing pushed back. China advocated for state-owned shipping giant Cosco to be included in the transaction, signaling its desire for a direct stake, not just an indirect one through the Hong Kong-based Hutchison, in the canal’s operations.

Amid mounting pressure from China and the threat of an anti-monopoly investigation, CK Hutchison announced Monday that the exclusive negotiation window with BlackRock had expired. However, the company also signaled its openness to reconfiguring the deal.

It said it would "remain open to discussions with a view to inviting a major strategic investor from the [People’s Republic of China] to join as a significant member of the consortium." According to the company, changes in deal structure and participant makeup are necessary to gain approval from "all relevant authorities."

The original $23 billion deal involved transferring ownership of 43 ports across 23 countries — including the two critical Panamanian ports located at either end of the canal in Balboa and Cristobal. CK Hutchison has operated both since 1997. The firm is owned by the family of Hong Kong’s wealthiest man, Li Ka-shing.

China’s growing footprint in Latin American infrastructure has long raised bipartisan alarms in Washington. However, Trump stands out as the first modern U.S. president to suggest reclaiming the Panama Canal, which the U.S. completed in 1914 and handed over to Panama in 1999 under a treaty signed in 1977 during the Carter administration.

"China is operating the Panama Canal, and we didn’t give it to China — we gave it to Panama — and we’re taking it back," Trump recently declared.

One analyst believes China may ultimately be excluded from the Panama port holdings while gaining control of most other assets in the larger deal.

"China will insist this be the quid pro quo: that the other global ports have Cosco participation. And obviously, Cosco is already a major global port holder," said Dane Chamorro, head of Global Risk Analysis at consulting firm Control Risks, in an interview with Fox News Digital.

From a U.S. perspective, they might say, ‘Okay, great—we got Hutchison, or China (since they tend to refer to them interchangeably), out of the two Panama ports.’ But in the long run, that may result in even more ports globally ending up in the hands of a Chinese state-owned entity."

If that happens, Cosco — through this broader consolidation — would become "far and away the dominant port owner and operator globally," Chamorro said. "That aligns with the fact that China is the world’s largest trading economy, the largest manufacturing economy, and the largest shipbuilder."

Chamorro also noted that U.S. companies do not operate on the same global scale in the port industry as Chinese, Hong Kong or Singaporean firms.

The failed Hutchison-BlackRock deal underscores the precarious position of Hong Kong businesses under growing pressure from Beijing to prioritize national loyalty — even when it threatens ties with Western partners.

Meanwhile, Panama insists it retains full sovereignty over the canal itself and maintains that Hutchison’s operation of the port facilities does not grant China any influence over canal operations.

Unprecedented violence rocks tropical paradise as brutal nightclub attack leaves multiple dead
[FoxNews] Police commissioner calls attack 'deeply disturbing' as government pledges to stamp out violence concentrated in Haitian areas

Three people are dead, and 10 others wounded after a mass shooting erupted at a popular nightclub in the Turks and Caicos Islands early Sunday morning, an attack officials are calling the first of its kind in the British territory.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force said the shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. on July 27 at the Hookah and Cigar Lounge in Providenciales. According to investigators, at least four suspects were involved in the attack, though no arrests have been made as of Tuesday.

Police Commissioner Fitz Bailey described the incident as "deeply disturbing" in a statement to the Associated Press.

At a press briefing, Premier Charles Washington Misick linked the shooting to gang-related violence and noted that much of the activity appears concentrated in Haitian communities. He urged members of those communities to cooperate with law enforcement and help identify how illegal firearms are entering the country.

Former Army officer develops offline AI for military use as Pentagon funds tech giants
[FoxBusiness] EdgeRunner AI can be used to write operations orders, risk assessments, memos to generals asking for support and more, saving hours and even days of time, according to Saltsman.

EdgeRunner AI is live in an overseas deployment with the United States Special Operations Command and, as a newer company, Saltsman is proud of the contract.
How much does it “hallucinate”?

Government Corruption
A Lead J6 Inquisitor Gets the Ax--Then Whines to the Media
[Julie Kelly] After volunteering to help lead the most politically-charged and abusive prosecution in U.S. history, Michael Gordon got his walking papers last month from Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Hey Mike, sucks to be you ,eh ?
Some of the details contained in a lawsuit filed this week by three fired Department of Justice employees brought a big smile to this Jan 6 reporter.

Over the past month, Attorney General Pamela Bondi has fired several DOJ employees as part of a rolling purge, which began in late January, of bad actors still populating the systemically corrupt agency. Three employees—former assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gordon, former D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Patricia Hartman, and former ethics chief Joseph Tirrell—are suing the DOJ, claiming the dismissals violated their civil service and Constitutional rights.

How Hartman, who for four straight years did little more than crank out a steady stream of press releases bragging about J6 arrests, convictions, and sentences, learned of her firing is particularly gratifying given her nefarious role as a key J6 propagandist:

"At approximately 3:50 PM EDT on July 7, 2025, Ms. Hartman was in her office working on a press release when her computer suddenly shut down," the complaint read. "As she was in the midst of calling the Help Desk for support, another DOJ official...came to her door and handed her a one-page document, titled ’MEMORANDUM FOR PATRICIA A. HARTMAN’ from ’THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’ with the subject line, ’Notice of Removal from Federal Service.’"

Delish. (Hartman this week called her firing "psychological terrorism." She would know.)

Gordon was informed by his supervisor on June 27 that he was getting canned.

"Mr. Gordon was directed to turn over his...government devices and access cards, pack up his personal belongings, and leave the building."

#1  This is one thing that has always bothered me about government employees. Ms. Hartman should try working in a for-profit corporate environment where layoffs are like tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes or wild fires. If you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, you lose your job. If you don't get your work done, you lose your job. If you piss off the wrong boss, you're gone. I think our government would be far more efficient if government employees had to live and work in that kind of environment.

Senator Hawley Introduces bill to send tariff rebate checks to taxpayers
[NBCnews] Republican Sen. Josh Hawley introduced legislation Monday to provide tariff rebate checks of at least $600 per adult and child to American families, similar to the stimulus checks the government distributed during the Covid pandemic.

Hawley, R-Mo., submitted his legislation after having pledged to do so Friday after President Donald Trump told reporters he would be interested in sending a tariff-related rebate check to Americans.

"Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country," Hawley said in a statement.

Trump triumphs to date: the first six months

India's AI-driven tech firings could derail middle class dreams
[BBC] India's showpiece software industry is facing a moment of reckoning.

The country's biggest private sector employer Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) - also its largest IT services company - has announced it will cut more than 12,000 jobs at middle and senior management levels. This will reduce the firm's workforce by 2%.

The Mumbai-headquartered software behemoth employs over half-a-million IT workers and is considered a bellwether for business sentiment across India's $283bn software industry. It forms the backbone of formal, white-collar employment in the country.

The decision, TCS says, was taken to make the company "future ready" as it invests in new areas and deploys artificial intelligence at scale amid seismic disruptions in its traditional business model.

Companies like TCS have, for decades, relied on cheap skilled labour to produce software for global clients at lower costs, but this has been upended by AI automating tasks and clients demanding more innovative solutions, rather than just cost savings on manpower.

"A number of re-skilling and redeployment initiatives have been under way," TCS said in a statement, adding it will be "releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible".

"Across IT companies, people managers are being let go while the doers are being kept to rationalise the workforce and bring in efficiencies," Neeti Sharma, CEO of staffing firm TeamLease Digital told the BBC.

She added that "there's been a massive spike" in emerging tech hiring in areas such as AI, cloud, data security, but it is not at the same intensity at which people are being fired.

TCS's announcement also highlights the sharp "skills mismatch" in the country's software industry, experts say.

As generative AI leads to a rapid enhancement of productivity, "this technology shift is forcing businesses to reassess their workforce structure and analyse if resources should be redirected toward roles that complement AI capabilities," Rishi Shah, economist with Grant Thornton Bharat told the BBC.

According to the industry body Nasscom, India needs a million AI professionals by 2026, but not even 20% of the country's IT professionals are AI-skilled.

While up-skilling spends by tech companies have significantly spiked as they rush to prepare a new pool of AI talent for the future, those without the requisite skills are being shown the door.

Besides the structural shifts brought about by the advent of AI, TCS's announcement also "reflects the broader growth challenges being faced by India's IT sector", according to global investment banking firm Jeffries.

"Aggregate net hiring at industry level has been weak since FY22 [financial year 2022], mainly due to the prolonged moderation in demand outlook," Jeffries said in a note.

Demand for IT services in the US – which contributes to half of the revenue for Indian software majors - has been impacted by Donald Trump's tariffs.

While tariffs chiefly target physical goods, analysts say companies are pausing on discretionary IT spending as they reconsider the economic impact of tariff uncertainties and their global sourcing strategies.

Rising AI adoption is also driving US companies to negotiate lower costs, forcing people heavy IT firms to work with fewer employees, according to Jeffries.

The ripple effects of this have begun to be felt in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune – once epicentres of India's IT boom. Some 50,000 people in the industry lost their jobs last year, according to one estimate. And there was a 72% drop in net employee additions at India's top six IT services companies.

All of this could have cascading effects on India's broader economy, which has struggled to create jobs for the millions of young graduates that enter the workforce every year.

In the absence of a strong manufacturing sector, these software companies - which made India the world's back office in the 1990s - were the preferred employment option for hundreds of thousands of new IT workers. They birthed a new, affluent middle class, spawning growth in many cities and fueling demand for cars and homes.

But as stable, well-paying jobs shrink, there are now questions over India's services-led economic boom.

Until just a few years ago, India's IT majors would absorb 600,000 fresh graduates every year. In the last two years, that number has dramatically fallen to about 150,000, according to TeamLease Digital.

Other emerging sectors such as financial technology startups and GCCs (global capability centres) – which are off-shore units of multinational companies that perform supporting tasks like IT, finance or research and development - are absorbing the rest, but at least "20-25% of fresh graduates will have no jobs," says Ms Sharma.

Ceasefire talks between Thailand and Cambodia begin
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Ceasefire talks between Thailand and Cambodia have started in Kuala Lumpur. This was reported on July 28 by The Star newspaper.

"The long-awaited peace meeting officially began at 3:15pm on Monday [10:15am Moscow time] at the Kompleks Seri Perdana building in [Kuala Lumpur]. The meeting aims to reduce tensions along the border between the two neighbouring countries," the statement said.

It is specified that the meeting is being held in a closed format under the chairmanship of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechaichai are taking part in the negotiations.

According to the newspaper, representatives from the United States and China are also present at the meeting.

On July 24, the Thai military said it had been hit by multiple rocket launchers fired at its positions by the Cambodian army during a border clash. In response, the Thai military launched airstrikes against Cambodian troops.

The escalation of violence in Thailand left 15 people dead. Later that day, the kingdom declared martial law over the conflict with Cambodia.

On July 26, Cambodia's permanent representative to the UN, Keo Chhea, said at a Security Council meeting that his country rejects accusations of attacking neighboring Thailand and calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Later, US President Donald Trump held telephone talks with the heads of Thailand and Cambodia. The American leader said that he was trying to simplify the difficult situation.

On the same day, the military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand was suspended due to heavy rains. Soon, Vechaichai confirmed the agreement to a truce.
