[Gateway] A heart-stopping moment captured on newly released surveillance video shows a Lee County Sheriff’s Office sniper executing a precision shot that neutralized an armed bank robber holding two hostages.
In February, 36-year-old Sterling Alavache, who was armed with a knife and claimed to have a bomb, was shot dead by a SWAT sniper during a robbery in southwest Florida.
According to the sheriff, the suspect was placing the hostages in "imminent danger" by putting one of them in a headlock and holding a knife to her throat during the hostage.
The footage, which has been circulating on social media, highlights the sniper’s skill as his bullet pierces a computer monitor to fatally strike the suspect at a Bank of America in Fort Myers.
The video, edited for clarity and context, was released by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook this past Saturday.

In an interview with the New York Post, Grace Pinson, an inmate who did time with Nassar at a federal penitentiary in Florida, says that around June of 2021, he witnessed Nassar entering a prison cell with Mexican gang members. According to Pinson, the cell had its door shut and windows covered, a sign that the inmates were either doing drugs, having sex, or both.
“It was definitely not for drugs,” Pinson asserted.
Pinson described Nassar as a “scared little church mouse” who never left his housing unit except to visit the chapel.
In the chapel, Pinson conversed with Nassar.
“He wished he didn’t need those guys,” Pinson said of his conversation with Nassar. “In some ways, what they expected of him was worse than the idea of being stabbed and killed.”
The protection arrangement definitely malfunctioned in July of 2023 after Nassar was nearly stabbed to death by another inmate for talking about how he enjoyed ogling female tennis players.
Nassar has been transferred from his original federal penitentiary in Florida to a new federal prison in Pennsylvania.
During his multiple decades as Team USA Gymnastics’ doctor, Nassar sexually abused over 250 girls. After a lengthy trial following a bungled FBI investigation, Nassar was sentenced to multiple hundreds of years in prison.

these billionaires could have really helped if they built nice new neighborhoods in existing small and medium urban areas and brought jobs to those areas -- there are hundreds of such areas which have lost population and jobs over the past 30 years and the roads, sewers, electrical lines, water lines and so forth are already almost all built thus reducing the overall cost

The nonprofit also hosts the annual Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference, which has hosted panels on 'Bigger D*** Energy: Life After Masculinizing,' 'The Ins and Outs of Masturbation Sleeves,' and 'The Adolescent Pathway: Preparing Young People for Gender-Affirming Care.'
'Today, Senator Bob Casey announced with Mazzoni Center leadership a $400K congressional appropriation for building upgrades, including a building generator to protect refrigerated pharmaceuticals and vaccines,' the group posted on social media Thursday.
The center is known to provide puberty blockers and hormone therapy for patients, including kids.
It also provides testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI's), counseling and health education.
In addition to providing treatment at the center, the group also connects patients to surgeons who can perform sex-change procedures. In Pennsylvania, these surgeries on minors are legal.
The annual Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference hosted by the group has sparked controversy in the past and in 2017 canceled an events on de-transitioning.
The 'Alternate ways of working with gender dysphoria' and 'Detransition: A panel discussion' were both canceled because, the group wrote at the time, 'when a topic becomes controversial, such as this one has turned on social media, there is a duty to make sure that the debate does not get out of control at the conference itself.'
'This was detracting from our overall mission of the conference, to provide an accessible and respectful environment that centers the experiences of the transgender and gender non-conforming/non-binary (GNC/NB) community,' the post continued.
In March, Casey withdrew his request for a $1 million allocation for another Pennsylvania-based LGTB group - the William Way LGBT Community Center - over its controversial ties to kink and BDSM parties.
'Senator Casey has been a leader and ally in the fight to protect LGBTQ rights in the U.S. Senate and will continue to support the LGBTQ community in the Commonwealth,' a spokesperson for the Democrat said at the time following the request withdrawal.
'He believes that consenting adults have the right to do whatever they want in their free time, but these types of appropriations projects warrant the highest level of scrutiny on behalf of taxpayers.'
Senator Casey withdrew his request for federal funding when new information about the third-party use of the facility emerged.'

Incredible footage has been released of the moment a sheriff's sniper killed a suspect by shooting directly through a computer monitor.
Sterling Ramon Alavache was holding two Bank of America workers in Florida at knifepoint while claiming to have a bomb.
Officers had already tried to get the would-be bank robber to surrender but instead Alavache decided instead to take two hostages.
The 36-year-old then put one of them in a headlock and held a knife to her throat - and that's when a SWAT team's sheriff's sniper decided to end the siege.
With remarkable precision, the bullet was fired straight through a computer monitor and into Alavache's head, killing him instantly.
Alavache, the suspect who was killed, suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and manic depression, also referred to as bipolar disorder, according to his GoFundMe.
The father-of-three also battled drug and alcohol addiction which only got worse following the death of his wife in 2018.
In 2022, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease causing progressive shutdown of the body through damage to the central nervous system and it was then he entered a downward spiral of drugs and depression once again.
'His struggle to remain clean became an induction of his mental struggles,' the family wrote.
'Though loved ones must now grieve Sterling's absence, they find solace in the fact that he is at peace, and these struggles are no more.'

The Taliban held a horror mass flogging for 63 people at a sport stadium for offences ranging from 'fleeing from home' to 'disrespect'.
The disturbing punishment event was held on Tuesday in Sar-e-Pul, northern Afghanistan and saw 48 men and 15 women lashed between 15 to 39 times.
In addition to the sickening physical abuse, some victims were locally reported to have also received prison sentences lasting between six months and five years for their crimes.
According to Voice of America, the group was the largest known since 2021 to receive public floggings in a Taliban event.
Local media reported that locals shockingly approved of the lashings, with one resident telling Tolo News: 'Young people will learn a lesson from the crimes they committed, and this will result in a decrease in crime and criminal activities'.
It also added that according to Sar-e-Pul officials, the individuals who received the harsh and brutal punishment were arrested by security forces for committing crimes including 'fleeing from home, armed robbery, adultery, sodomy, and disrespect'.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which has attempted to maintain relations with the Taliban, condemned the event on Wednesday, along with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR).
'We are deeply disturbed by the widespread, continued use of corporal punishment in Afghanistan,' UN Human Rights spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said in a statement.
The use of a sport stadium to host the chilling event is not an unheard of for the Taliban, after the terrorist organisation convicted a man of murder and allowed the brother of the alleged victim to kill the convicted man before the eyes of a stadium full of spectators in February.
'The man was shot five times with a rifle by the victim's brother, according to an anonymous witness,' Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported at the time.
A month before, nine men were publicly flogged up to 39 times each by the Taliban in front of a packed football stadium.
The draconian punishments were handed out in the Ahmad Shahi Stadium in Kandahar by the Islamist regime.
Hundreds gathered to watch the brutal sentences being administered, with some even climbing up trees for a good view of the proceedings.
The recent flogging comes just three months after the Taliban announced it will soon start stoning women to death in public.
Addressing Western officials in a voice message broadcast on state TV, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the radical group's Supreme Leader, called the Western human rights defenders 'representatives of the devil'.
'You say it's a violation of women's rights when we stone them to death. But we will soon implement the punishment for adultery,' he told the West in his harshest comments since taking over Afghanistan in 2021.
'We will flog women in public. We will stone them to death in public,' he announced.
'These are all against your democracy but we will continue doing it.
'We both say we defend human rights – we do it as God's representative and you as the devil's,' he added.
The Taliban, despite initial promises of a more moderate rule, began carrying out severe punishments in public shortly after coming to power.
The punishments are similar to those during their previous rule of Afghanistan in the late 1990s.
The Taliban regained power in August 2021, following the collapse of the internationally supported government and the withdrawal of all US and UK-led Western troops after nearly 20 years of involvement in the Afghan war.
