Merz Says Israeli Actions In Gaza 'No Longer Justified' - Vice Chancellor Klingbeil Says Germany Plans To Put More Pressure On Israel Over Gaza
2025-05-27
[DeutscheWelle] Israel must not be allowed to win and be safe from destruction, when weak sentimentality might be indulged instead.

#11  Is this any of your business, Germany? Since when are you a moral authority? And how are you enjoying your Russian LGN, that you've been importing behind your moral preening and saber rattling?

#10  For someone trying to start a war with Russia, maybe Merz needs to focus on that instead of social media trends.

#8  Here's a statement made today by German FM Wadephul (Deepl translated):

“The government of the state of Israel, which in my view must be completely distinguished from the people who live in the state of Israel, I believe that this government must know very clearly that we will not allow ourselves to be instrumentalized, and that our one hundred percent fight against anti-Semitism and our complete support for the right to exist and the security of the state of Israel, must not be instrumentalized for the conflict, for the warfare that is currently being waged in the Gaza Strip, so we will not allow ourselves to be put under political pressure as the German government and put in a position where we are forced to show solidarity, which will not be possible in this form. ”

Source link in German.

Wadephul also mentioned red lines that would trigger an arms embargo.

The Merz coalition is now to the left of the Greens' and East German Communists' official position on Israel.

This is a huge realignment, a much bigger story than Trump dressing down Zelensky.

#7  ^Yea, well. Fortunately for Israel the non-Islamic/Wakandan "anti-Zionism" is based in Western Europe - which (just as Napoleon & Hitler before them) got itself into a fight with Russia.

#6  Or, maybe, they got tired of pretending.

That too.

But they needed a considerable international and domestic political support framework to be actually able to stop pretending.

Apparently 10/7 ultimately helped create such a framework.

#5  #3 Maybe this, or maybe that. Or, maybe, they got tired of pretending. Betcha most Germans blame the Jews for WWII.

#4  So when the allies entered German territory in early 1945, further actions were 'no longer justified'?

#3  This is a fundamental pivot against Israel by the Merz coalition.

For the last couple of days there's been coordinated messaging by coalition officials indicating a leftward realignment in their Israel policies.

It started with the anti-semitism commissioner and continued with Merz, the FM, the leftist Vice Chancellor and some foreign policy expert MPs.

All shifted their positions in a leftward / anti-Israel direction. The Vice Chancellor has at least implied support for an arms embargo and sanctions. A prominent leftist traditionally pro-Russian and anti-Israel social democrat MP is openly calling for an arms embargo. The FM demands an immediate cease fire and then the implementation of the two state "solution."

I can only speculate about the reasons. Merz coalition has a slim, unstable majority in parliament which might have forced him to make secret concessions to the left in exchange for his election.

The above mentioned leftist MP recently held secret negotiations with the Russians. Maybe selling out Israel is buying some concessions from the Russians.

A tin foil hat scenario would involve a deal with pro-Iran elements in the Trump 47 administration. Germany would help intimidate Israel into acquiescing to a nuclear armed Iran in exchange for a favorable trade deal for Europe.

Whatever the explanation, this is a huge shift. Germany's policy position is now qualitatively identical to Ireland's and Spain's now.
