Poland ready to develop its own nukes

Courtesy of Elmerert Hupens2660, Pravda Poland provides a readable version, for those who prefer to get their information that way.
We are in a situation in which Poland — and we can state this here with full determination — will use all available opportunities to enhance its defense capability. We will not look back at anyone, we will not be afraid of anyone's criticism.

Everything that will contribute to the improvement of Poland's defense will be carried out and used. We are in serious talks with the French about their nuclear umbrella project for Europe. It is high time for Poland to use its available resources and its own experience, as well as experience on the battlefield, the Ukrainian experience, and boldly assess its capabilities with regard to the most modern weapons.

#7  For the United State vs the Soviet Union, nukes were a deterrent. Due to the flight time between Moscow and Washington, neither side could launch an attack without the other side having time to launch a counter-strike. MAD worked, because of the distance.

Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? That was the Soviet response to NATO installing medium range, nuke-capable missiles in Turkey. Yeah, that Turkey, in case you were wondering how they ended up in NATO despite their non-proximity to the Atlantic ocean.

Short distances make a first strike attractive because it has the potential to remove your opponent's offensive capability. This creates an unstable launch on warning situation. Use it or lose it. If you suspect your opponent is even thinking about an attack, you best go first since the cost of being wrong is so high. (see Israel 7-Oct for an example)

tl;dr: short range nukes are destabilizing and will lead to a big mess.
