[Regnum] The regional prosecutor's office demanded in court that the crimes of the Nazis in North Ossetia be recognized as genocide of the peoples of the USSR. This was reported on Tuesday, February 18, on the official website of the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia.
"On the instructions of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov, the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania has submitted to the court a statement on recognizing as war crimes and crimes against humanity, genocide of the Soviet people the established and newly identified crimes committed by the Nazi invaders and their accomplices on the territory of the North Ossetian ASSR during the Great Patriotic War," the statement says.
It is noted that the prosecutor's office prepared the statement together with law enforcement agencies, archival and educational organizations of the region.
It is emphasized that during the occupation of Ossetia, which lasted from October to December 1942, the Nazi invaders tortured and killed civilians, simultaneously destroying the republic’s infrastructure.
The Prosecutor General's Office stated that more than 2,300 people fell victim to Nazi crimes in Ossetia, shot by the occupiers and killed by enemy air raids and artillery fire. It added that over 1,600 people were forcibly deported to Germany. The total material damage to the republic is equivalent to 2 billion rubles.
The agency also noted that evidence, including archival documents, was presented to confirm the stated facts.
“The application was filed with the Supreme Court of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania in order to protect the national interests of the Russian Federation, the rights of the relatives of the deceased, as well as the subsequent dissemination to the world community of information about the victims of the invaders during the Great Patriotic War, the restoration of historical justice,” the Prosecutor General’s Office stated.
As reported by the Regnum news agency, on February 7, the Murmansk Region prosecutor's office filed a claim with the court to establish the fact of genocide of the peoples of the USSR by the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War. The agency demanded that the Nazi atrocities be recognized as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
During the war of 1941-1945, the territory of the Murmansk region was partially occupied by Wehrmacht troops. As a result of massive bombings, over 1.5 thousand houses were destroyed in the region.
Red Army soldiers captured by the Nazis were kept in camps in inhumane conditions and forced to do backbreaking work. The Red Army soldiers died from exhaustion and cold. The total number of Nazi victims in the Murmansk region exceeds 15 thousand people. The amount of damage caused to the region is 1.3 trillion rubles, converted to the current ruble exchange rate.
