[Regnum] One of the largest coronal holes on the Sun is turning towards the Earth, which could lead to a powerful magnetic storm on February 10. This was reported by the solar astronomy laboratory of the Space Research Institute and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI and ISTP RAS).
“The speed of plasma in the vicinity of our planet may increase to 600-700 km/s, compared to the current 350-400 km/s,” says a publication on the laboratory’s website.
According to scientists, the Earth will be under the influence of a coronary hole for the entire next week. However, they noted that a magnetic storm may not begin.
As reported by the Regnum news agency, on February 6, the solar astronomy laboratory of the IKI and ISFZ RAS reported a powerful flare on the Sun. The center of the flare was in the area of maximum influence on the Earth, which makes the probability of these processes influencing the planet high.
On January 23, astronomers captured a video of a black jet streaming from the surface of the Sun. This rare phenomenon is caused by the large mass of neutral hydrogen gas. It almost completely absorbs short-wavelength radiation falling on it from behind, making it appear black.
