Measuring 9.1 in magnitude, the violent tremor miles beneath the ocean floor was the third strongest to ever rock the planet. It unleashed a series of catastrophic tsunamis that obliterated everything in their path, killing hundreds of thousands of people on all sides of the Indian Ocean and wiping away entire towns.
