Since Ukraine is not claiming credit, I'm going with natural causes, like old rusty ships and bad weather. The Times of Israel article mentions running aground which suggests bad seamanship and probably voids the warranty.

#2  The unstated story is, Russian logistics have gotten so bad that they've been using shallow draft river and canal tankers to supply Crimea. Get in deep water, up comes a storm, and guess the results.
