Russian spies 'almost certainly' tried to derail Moldovan election votes in the UK with failed 'bomb threat' plot at polling stations in Northampton and Liverpool, Brit spymaster warns - but pro-Putin candidate is still set to LOSE |

[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Russian spies have been accused of trying to derail Moldova's election with a failed 'bomb threat' plot at British polling stations for Moldovan ex-pats. Moldova went to the polls yesterday in a knife-edge election, which the pro-Western president Maia Sandu appears to have narrowly won. However, the campaign was marred by alleged election meddling by the Kremlin in an apparent attempt to skew the vote towards Ms Sandu's more Putin-friendly opponent, intelligence experts last night feared. That interference has not taken place exclusively within Moldova, with the nation's foreign ministry claiming polling stations for ex-pats in the UK and Germany had been targeted by bomb threats that were 'intended only to stop the voting process.' In the UK, election centres in Liverpool and Northampton were reportedly impacted, with the Liverpool location being forced to move to Manchester over security fears. Now a former British spymaster has claimed Kremlin operatives working as part of the secretive GRU agency in Russia may well have been behind the hoax threats. |
