Dockworkers' strike could push up prices and cause shortages if it lasts for weeks |
2024-10-01 |
Workers began walking picket lines early Tuesday in a strike over wages and the ports’ use of automation, though some progress was reported in negotiations over a new contract. The existing contract between the ports and about 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired at midnight. The strike comes just weeks before a tight presidential election and could become a factor in the race if shortages begin to affect many voters. In early picketing, workers outside the Port of Philadelphia walked in a circle and chanted, "No work without a fair contract." The union, which is striking for the first time since 1977, posted message boards on the side of a truck reading: "Automation Hurts Families: ILA Stands For Job Protection." |

#5 FWIW, Although there hasn't been a strike since 1977 the ILA has initiated several work slowdowns. Also, the average wage for an ILA member is about $40/hr. Non wage benefits, e.g., paid vacation time, health benefits, are difficult to estimate but most analysts think it is equivalent to about $25/hr. |

#4 Had a neighbor who trucked goods into the NY harbor area. He said they had two lines for unloading-loading. The "standard" load-unload line. The "premium" load-unload line. Access to the 'premium' line was simple. Simply hand your premium payment to the I.L.A. thug who walked the truck line and you were good-to-go for the premium line. Everyone in the "standard" line simply sat there and continued to wait. |

#2 They will get no sympathy from me. Kamala will do nothing because she doesn't understand how this makes her and Biden look. The first recorded use of machineguns in the US was on striking workers (Who back then had some valid gripes). These clown deserve flamethrower time. The company should tell them "Every day you are on strike, we'll cut your pay 10%" |
