At least 14 dead, 66 hurt as Israeli airstrike targets Hezbollah commander in Dahieh; Quds Force denies deputy commander killed in Beirut
2024-09-21
[Naharnet] Israel announced it had killed the commander of Hezbollah's elite unit in a strike Friday that Lebanese officials said left 14 dead and dozens wounded in the movement's Beirut stronghold.

Ibrahim Akil, who was also wanted by the United States for involvement in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut, headed the Iran-backed militant group's elite Radwan Force.

AFP journalists at the scene said the blast left a massive crater and gutted the lower floors of a high-rise building in the Lebanese capital's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Akil's killing was the second of a senior Hezbollah commander since the start of the war in Gaza, following another Israeli strike in Beirut that in July killed Fouad Shukur, a top operations chief for the movement.

It also followed two waves of explosions, on Tuesday and Wednesday, of communication devices used by Hezbollah members, which Hezbollah blamed on Israel.

Those blasts killed dozens and left Hezbollah reeling while dramatically shifting the focus of the Israel-Hamas war northwards.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said they were "of course, very concerned about the heightened escalation" and called for "maximum restraint" from all sides.

Iranian media denies reports that IRGC Quds Force deputy commander was killed in Beirut

[IsraelTimes] Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency denies reports that the deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force was killed in the strike in Beirut’s Dahiyeh earlier today.

It says that the reports of his death, which were published without sources by Sky News Arabia, were a "complete lie."
"Lies! All lies! He's just resting. Pining for the fjords!"

Israel IS exercising maximum restraint - otherwise your boss, Tony the Toad, would be dead.
