"One person was killed during an operation by French security forces in St. Louis on Thursday night, bringing the death toll since the start of unrest in the archipelago to twelve," the statement said.
Police are also reportedly continuing to search for 10 people in St. Louis County suspected of shooting law enforcement officers with an armed gun.
As reported by the Regnum news agency, on May 13, a peaceful demonstration in the capital of New Caledonia, Noumea, against the French constitutional bill aimed at expanding the electoral corps in local elections, escalated into clashes with the police and mass riots. In connection with the outbreak of violence in Noumea, a curfew was imposed, and later the French authorities brought troops into New Caledonia to ensure the security of ports and airports.
