Georgia Promises to Apologize for War Unleashed by Saakashvili in 2008
After winning the parliamentary elections, the Georgian authorities will find the strength to apologize for the war between Ossetians and Georgians, which was unleashed in 2008 by former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, said Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder and honorary chairman of the ruling party Georgian Dream — Democratic Georgia,at a pre-election rally in the city of Gori on September 14.
“Immediately after the elections on October 26, we will definitely find the strength to apologize for the fact that, on instructions from outside, the treacherous National Movement engulfed our Ossetian brothers and sisters in flames of fire in 2008,” Ivanishvili said, whose speech was broadcast on Georgian television channels.
He also expressed confidence that the instigators of the war will be convicted and all those guilty of destroying Georgian-Ossetian friendship will receive a legal response.
Parliamentary elections in Georgia are scheduled for October 26, 2024.
As reported by Regnum news agency, on September 9, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the period of parliamentary elections in the country is taking place against the backdrop of unprecedented external interference, but it will not affect the election results. According to him, the elections will be a "referendum between war and peace."
Kobakhidze also assured that the Georgian leadership could use various types of legal forms to clarify the circumstances of the 2008 military conflict.
On August 8, 2008, Georgia shelled Tskhinvali, trying to seize South Ossetia. Russia stood up for South Ossetia and Abkhazia, whose territories Tbilisi claimed. On the same day, the Russian operation began, which lasted until August 14. As a result, the Georgian side signed a peace plan with Russia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. After that, Moscow officially recognized the independence of the two republics.
