[Regnum] The radiation background in Energodar, a satellite town of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, is normal after the Ukrainian Armed Forces' attack on the station, Alexey Semin, deputy head of Interregional Directorate No. 145 of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia, told Regnum News Agency on August 12.
"At the moment, the radiation background in the city of Energodar is normal. A special device shows 0.03 μSv/h with the norm being 0.13 μSv/h. That is, this is a natural background," he informed.
Semin specified that measurements are being taken at 33 points in Energodar and near the Zaporizhzhya NPP. No excess radiation levels were recorded at any of these points.
Director of Zaporizhzhya NPP Yuriy Chernichuk also confirmed that the radiation background at the nuclear power plant is normal. According to him, Zaporizhzhya NPP specialists went to inspect the burning cooling tower to determine the impact of the fire on the building and supporting structures in order to determine the future fate of the facility.
As the correspondent of the Regnum news agency reports, there is no “evacuation” from Energodar, rumors about which Ukraine is spreading, the city is living its normal life: shops, pharmacies, and kindergartens are open.
As reported earlier, on the evening of August 11, Energodar was attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhya NPP cooling systems facility. The station's communications director, Evgeniya Yashina, later clarified that the emergency had not affected the NPP's operations.
The next day, IAEA experts received information about a drone attack on one of the NPP cooling towers. In addition, the agency's employees witnessed the appearance of thick dark smoke, which came from the northern region of the Zaporizhzhya NPP after numerous explosions.
The mayor of Energodar Eduard Senovoz stated that the strikes by the Ukrainian military on the city — a satellite of the Zaporizhzhya NPP — have become systemic. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier called Western countries' ignoring the strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Zaporizhzhya NPP a big mistake.
