On the evening of June 25, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller called the blocking of European media in Russia “a reprisal against journalism.” He also made the claim that the Russian side made such a decision allegedly out of fear of “the truth about its actions.”
According to Zakharova, such statements by a State Department representative are either arrogance, or stupidity, or both, united by the concept of “liberal democracy.”
“Retaliatory measures. Introduced in connection with the ban on Russian media in the EU. But the State Department again blames Russia for everything,” she wrote.
As Regnum reported, on June 24, the EU Council announced that the community had decided to limit access to three Russian media - Izvestia, Rossiyskaya Gazeta and RIA Novosti. At the same time, in mid-May, the EU already banned the broadcasting of RIA Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
Later that day, Zakharova said Russia had developed countermeasures to restrict access to three Russian media outlets in the EU. The diplomat noted that Moscow understands that it is useless to count on Brussels’ commitment to international legal obligations.
On June 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that in response to the EU ban on the broadcasting of RIA Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta on Russian territory, restrictions on access to the resources of 81 European media were being introduced. The ministry recalled that the Russian side has repeatedly warned of retaliatory measures to politically motivated harassment of journalists from Russia and to unfounded bans on Russian media in the EU.
