An analysis of the actions of Western politicians, including during Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, shows that clarification of some parameters of the Russian nuclear doctrine is overdue, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on June 18.
Such work is being carried out, it is being carried out responsibly, and it is not yet possible to indicate any time schedule for clarifying the parameters of the doctrine, Ryabkov told reporters.
“Recent experience, including that gained during the Northern Military District, and an analysis of the behavioral model of the collective West in connection with the Northern Military District, shows that it is necessary to clarify certain parameters that apply to situations described both in the military doctrine as such and in the fundamentals of public policy in the field of nuclear deterrence,” noted the Deputy Minister.
As Regnum reported, in March, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is ready to use weapons, including nuclear weapons, if there is a threat to the existence of the Russian state, or a risk of damage to the sovereignty and independence of the country. The President recalled that all this is spelled out in the profile strategy. The head of state also said that the Russian nuclear triad is more modern than that of any other country.
On June 7, the president noted that Russia, unlike Western countries, has never rattled nuclear weapons. The head of state also urged not to talk about this topic in vain, emphasizing that Moscow has no need to use nuclear weapons. He again noted that on the issue of the possibility of using nuclear weapons, Moscow is guided by the corresponding doctrine, and added that the doctrine is a “living instrument” and can be amended if necessary.
In June, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that NATO member countries had begun consultations on the need to put nuclear weapons on alert. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called these statements another case of escalating tension. Unacceptable and escalatory actions by the United States and its NATO allies raise the question for Russia to bring the basic documents on nuclear deterrence more in line with current needs, Ryabkov said on June 11.
