[Regnum] A new federal district, which will include Crimea, the DPR, the LPR, the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, will be created in the near future, the governor of the Zaporozhye region, Yevgeny Balitsky, announced on June 6.
The issue is being considered at the federal level, the governor noted. The district will probably be called Novorossiya, he said.
“A federal district will be created, I think this should happen in the near future. I think it will be Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, Kherson regions and Crimea,” Kommersant quotes Balitsky.
In 2014, after the return of Crimea to Russia, the Crimean Federal District was created. Currently, Crimea and new regions of Russia are part of the Southern Federal District, Crimea has been part of it since 2016.
As Regnum reported, in June 2023, the acting head of the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo, proposed creating a separate federal district for the new regions. He called the idea expedient, noting the transport and logistics proximity of the new regions.
In August 2023, Balitsky reported that Russia could create a separate federal district for the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. This issue has not yet been discussed in detail, he emphasized.
In February 2024, President Vladimir Putin included the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into the Southern Military District.
