#9  Being able to see recently moved soil along roadways in AFG and Iraq saved a lot of lives. Not sure what the airborne technology was, but a lot of IEDs were spotted. That was nearly 20 years ago.

#8  Synthetic Aperture Radar can see some incredible details, even below the surface. Things like missile silos, revetment tunnels, and submarines running shallow.
One of the basic limitations is caused by the microwave wavelength being unable to resolve smaller objects.

#7  I remember fondly using an Air Guard RF-4C in support of Counter-Drug operations looking for a huge underground grow site in the rural California Central Valley. We had them fly a suspected area using both Visual Camera and FLIR systems. The side by side film images afterwards showed a plain field with a small shed, and a well defined drive-up path to it. The InfraRed showed a huge heat plume from the shed, the out-gassing for the massive sunlamp heat from a basketball sized underground grow site with hundreds of high grade hydroponic sativa plants. Military support to civil authorities at its finest!

#6  Summertime's coming here.
The tunnel exit's thermal gradient should be quite evident.

KH-11 (Keyhole) could capture a person's imagine at 110 miles in the early 80's.

Now, the spooks admit they can resolve to mere inches from 160 miles up on a clear day.

One has to wonder, how far along the spooks are actually past the KH-11 Block 5 design now some 10+ years later?
