A timely reminder that Rantburg is entirely open source information. So please do not share here things that little civilian housewives like me ought not to mention at my next dinner party — I can’t always remember what I ought not say.

My thanks in advance!

#50  In addition to intel gathered during the recon by fire conducted overnight, prior to the attack the Iranians seized the MSC Aries carrying 1300 TEUs value exceeding $50M from Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Exxon Mobil, and Dow Chemical.
Algeria (237 TEUs and $10M worth of goods)
Belgium (409 TEUs - $15M worth)
Egypt (211 TEUs - $12M worth)
Greece (319 TEUs - $10M worth)
India (255 TEUs - $10.6M worth)
Italy (238 TEUs - $14M worth)
Turkey (514 TEUs worth $22M)
It should be noted that Israel was a minimal country named as the destination for these goods, with only 21 TEUs identified onboard, worth approximately $3M.

Iran will probably extort $ X from the owners for safe return of the ship and cargo to cover a potion of the cost of ordnance expended during the drone/missile attack...

Mighty fine mafia tactics to go along with the heavy hand, "that's a fine trade route you have there, it would be terrible if anything happened to it..."

How did all of this come about? Thanks for asking. It's called 'Regime Change' and it happened ..... "February 1979, the monarchy was officially brought down and Khomeini assumed leadership over Iran while guerrillas and rebel troops overwhelmed Pahlavi loyalists in armed combat."

Guess who was behind it.
Posted by: Besoeker   2024-04-14 09:51

#25  I think the Iranians will wait for Israel to counter strike before a second wave. That’ll provide an opportunity to see how well their ADA performs against Israeli equipment. Especially since the Iranian UN ambassador called “no tag backs.”

#17  four waves of 100 Shaheed drones... 30 cruise missiles... 8 hypersonic...
That suggests at least 438 interceptor rockets used expended to interdict the attack

Just thinking out loud, I would expect that some of the drones would be vulnerable to anti-aircraft cannon fire. Not disputing G-T's back of the envelope calculations.

In the current Rus vs Ukr situation, electronic warfare has played a role in drone defense. No idea of Israeli capabilities, but I suspect they have been paying attention.

#16  Interestingly Iran appears to have only used its light ballistic missiles (Rezvan, Haj Qasem and possibly Haybar-Shekan) but none of the heavier Ghadrs, Emad, Fattah-1/2, Sejil-2, Dezful, Qiam-2 or Khorramshahr-2 missiles.

over this period of activity. Restocking a difficult costly effort but also production time to replace a concern. Media presentations remind me of the Ukraine media. The truth will become available eventually. Video conformations I would rather wait for.

Posted by: M. Murcek   2024-04-14 07:31

#6  So … four waves of 100 Shaheed drones each to identify and deplete the ADA assets. Then 30 cruise missiles and 8 hypersonic timed to arrive with the last wave of (jet powered drones). That suggests at least 438 interceptor rockets used expended to interdict the attack (ballpark 1.2 billion dollars?). How many times can Israel endure such strikes (with the aid of US, UK, Jordan and Egypt helping shoot down incoming) before the cupboard is bare. And now there is even more intense competition between Ukraine and Israel to obtain the limited number of ADA missiles in the pipeline.
