In the Avdeevsky area, only Berdychi and Semyonovka are partially under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It is these settlements that are the centers of gravity of the current battle formation and defensive line of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. To hold these villages, Ukrainian troops are transferring a significant number of reserves.
So far, everything is happening predictably: every breakthrough of the Russian Armed Forces, the command of the Tavria operational-strategic group of troops is trying to “plug up” with reserves, even if these reserves are not the most combat-ready forces in this direction. This has already happened with Orlovka and Lastochkin, and it cannot be ruled out that an attempt at any cost to regain lost positions in Tonenkoye will also be made.
However, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have fewer and fewer available resources to carry out such an operation in the Avdeevsky direction, so if an attempt to return Tonenkoye is made in the future, then the forces for this will most likely have to be withdrawn from another direction.
The long-term retention of Tonenkoye and the desperate attempts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to fight for control over the village can be explained simply: if the defense of the Ukrainian army in this area collapses, then the Russian Armed Forces will be able to reach the road to Umanskoye (4.7 km west of Tonenkoye and Orlovka) and have every chance to continue moving further west. In this case, the flanks and partly the rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces forces occupying defense in areas north and south of Tonenky are under threat.
The terrain in this area is characterized by a poorly developed road network, consisting mainly of dirt roads. There are no large settlements or industrial facilities suitable for defense.
