Leading specialist of the Phobos weather center Evgeny Tishkovets announced this on February 18 in the Telegram channel.“After heavy overnight snowfalls in Moscow, the snowdrifts over the last 24 hours have grown by 5 cm. Thus, at the capital’s base weather station VDNKh, the height of the snow cover by 9:00 was 67 cm, which is 1.7 times higher than normal, at Balchug - 61 cm, in Tushino - 73 cm,” wrote Tishkovets.
He noted that the record for February 18 for snow had stood since 1966, when there was 65 cm in Moscow. Now the new achievement exceeds the previous one by two centimeters.
According to him, the height of snowdrifts in the capital may increase by another one or two centimeters during the day.
The forecaster added that Moscow met its monthly precipitation norm ahead of schedule. At VDNKh, the amount of precipitation was 44.8 mm, compared with the February norm of 44 mm.
As reported by IA Regnum, the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, said that the snowfall that occurred in Moscow on February 15 was one of the three heaviest for this winter and repeated the 1966 record. He added that the winter was very snowy, which had not happened for three or four decades. According to him, the snowfall will continue, but with less intensity.
The chief specialist of the Moscow Meteorological Bureau, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, said on February 16 that heavy snowfalls are no longer expected in Moscow.
In Moscow, 2.06 meters of snow have already fallen over the winter, compared to the norm of 1.52 meters; the authorities are continuously monitoring the condition of the road network, said the deputy mayor of the capital for housing and communal services and landscaping, Pyotr Biryukov.
