[FoxNews] The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., says three of its officers were shot Wednesday by a suspect who remains barricaded inside a home.

said officers who arrived at a residence in the 5000 block of Hanna Place around 7:30 a.m. to serve an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals were met with gunfire when they attempted to gain entry, according to Fox5 DC.
Over a cruelty to animals call? Just how unusual had they been?
Smith added that the suspect remains barricaded inside the property in the southeastern part of the city.

In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Smith said police are still trying to determine who the suspect is and that he has sounded "very agitated" at times during his ongoing conversations with officers at the scene.

"We have not made visual contact with him since this morning when the incident occurred," she also said.

The shooting left three officers with "gunshot wound injuries that appear non-life-threatening," a police spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "All three have been transported to an area hospital for treatment."

"A fourth officer has also been transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. This officer did not sustain gunshot wound injuries," the spokesperson added.

Smith said later Wednesday that the officers were "in good spirits" when she visited them at the hospital.

Multiple roads have now been closed around the shooting scene as law enforcement responds to the incident. Three nearby elementary schools were also operating on an alert status, school officials say.

Smith said there would be an early dismissal from Kipp DC's Leap Academy beginning at 2 p.m. Parents were told to arrive at 46th St SE and Benning Rd SE to pick up their children. Officers would take care of children whose parents could not arrive at that time.
MSN adds:
A gunman who shot three D.C. coppers outside a home in Southeast D.C. Wednesday morning surrendered after barricading inside the home for about 13 hours and continuing to fire shots, multiple police sources confirmed. The officers are expected to recover.

Police arrested 46-year-old Julius James and charged him with cruelty to animals. Charges for shooting the officers are pending.

Up to 30 dogs were found in the home, requiring three Humane Rescue Alliance vans to transport them.

The officers were serving an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals when James shot up about 7:30 a.m., police said.
