12 Russian elite marines blow themselves up while cooking on an open fire next to live ammunition
2023-12-02
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Russia lost a dozen elite marines when they cooked food on an open fire and triggered an explosion from nearby live ammunition.
"Elite"
Eight of the marines from 155th Separate Guards Marine Brigade, based in Vladivostok, were killed on the spot.

Four more died in hospital, said the News 166 outlet in Rostov, which said the humiliating tragedy had been confirmed by three independent sources.

Reports say a RPG-7 grenade launcher shell caught fire and exploded at Kuzminsky military training ground in Rostov region, bordering Ukraine.

'About 20 people from [the marine brigade] lit a fire next to stocks of ammunition during their lunch break. An RPG-7 grenade launcher shell rolled into the fire and exploded,' 161.ru quoted one government source as saying.

#3  I remember the Mortar Platoon during a meal break on the range heating coffee with the "cheese" from the base of 81 mm mortar rounds. As I recall the round came packaged with six "slices" of propellant change and you could strip them off as needed to adjust the range of the round. They burned well and for a decent period so they were excellent for cooking fires. The one danger that everyone knew, is never, ever try and put them out by stepping on them! The pressure could accelerate the burn rate like the compression of the bottom of the mortar tube and potentially blow your foot off.

#2  Using C4 as a cooking booster is old, widely used trick. You gotta be careful, though. No plastic cookware.

#1  Right next to the NO SMOKING sign.

Not that pitching used 81mm cartons into the burn barrel has been without excitement.
