String of plea deals from Minneapolis DA outrages families of victims, draws concern from legal experts
2023-10-05
[FoxNews] A string of controversial plea deals from a Minneapolis district attorney has been met with outrage by the families of murder victims and sparked concern from legal experts who say the move could exacerbate crime.

"The types of plea deals offered by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty are inconsistent with the demands of justice," Tim Rosenberg, a Bradley fellow at Stanford's Constitution Law Center, told Fox News Digital.

Some of Moriarty’s decisions seem too lenient for even Democratic Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, whom billionaire George Soros backs.

In 2022, Zaria McKeever was killed by two teen brothers hired by her ex-boyfriend. Prosecutors initially pushed to try both teenagers as adults but were offered probationary deals by Moriarty.

The case was reassigned to Ellison, who said Moriarty’s move was "disproportionate to the seriousness of the crime."

"While I share the belief that too many juveniles are involved in the adult criminal justice system, accountability for the seriousness of this crime has been missing in this case," Ellison wrote.

#7  What's funny is these DA's don't realize that eventually, there won't be anyone to arrest and release...or as their released there will be a drive by and their "DIDIN DU NUFFIN" angel hass now learned all lives splatter. People WILL have justice...if you don't provide something resembling it, they will do it their way. No trials, no appeals, just smile, wait for flash.

#6  There are too many people who don't pay attention to 'results', Tom.

#5  Minneapolis voters can always vote for someone else, but I'm not holding my breath.

I am often surprised by the strength of moral vanity in determining voting patters, regardless of results in the real world.

#4  Criminal justice, like public health, should be outside the realm of political meddling.

#3  Logically, contract killers make much less in jail. Restorative Justice demands that minority criminals not be penalized monetarily by incarceration.

#2  ...skipping the logic that holding them till they were 25 would protect society?

#1  She won election to that office w 57% of the vote and a promise to carry out the full 'restorative justice' program.

She justifies her program as based on science. Since the brain isn't fully developed until age 25 (which is a misconception since impulse control is almost completely finished by age 18), offender given big break.

And since most violent crime is by people younger than 26, there you have it.
