Biden administration to invest $1.2 billion in two 'massive vacuum cleaners' to suck carbon out of the air
2023-08-12
[MAIL] The Energy Department is awarding up to $1.2 billion to two projects to directly remove carbon dioxide from the air in what officials are calling the largest investment in 'engineered carbon removal' in history.

The process, known as direct air capture, does not yet exist on a meaningful scale and could be a game changer — if it did and were economical.
A Crazy Eddie idea if ever there was one, on par with putting a sun shade in space to reduce global boiling.
'If we deploy this at scale, this technology can help us make serious headway toward our net zero emissions goals while we are still focused on deploying more clean energy at the same time,' Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a press conference call.

The first direct air capture venture, Project Cypress, will be built in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. The second, South Texas DAC, is planned for Kleberg County, Texas.

Each claims it will capture up to one million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year initially. A representative of the Texas project said it will scale up to remove 30 million metric tons per year once fully operational.

#13  I presume into the trees they plant. That would be an increase of about 0.2% of the total tree planting for each of the projects. Not trivial. There's some space north of Virginia that might be cleared to make room for trees.

#11  Wudn't have to do all this stoopid stuff if we'd just let Kerry and his acolyte tell us how to save the world from the carbon climate.

#9  Mankind will never be safe from the Threat of Global Warming(tm) until every last trace of CO2 is removed from our atmosphere. Sure, the plants will hate it, but what have those green bastages ever done for us?

#2  'Massive Vacuum Cleaners' seem to me as somewhat dangerous for avian (and other) wildlife.

If the big fans won't get 'em, maybe these will.
