Israel detains 10 Palestinians, dozens of settlers break into Al-Aqsa
2023-07-17
The view from Egypt.
[AlAhram] Israeli occupation forces arrested at least 10 Paleostinians during raids across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, on Saturday night and Sunday, according to local sources and witnesses cited by Paleostinian News Agency WAFA.

During confrontations in the Silwan neighborhoud of occupied Jerusalem, Israeli police arrested a Paleostinian young man named Ahmad Jamil Silwadi, along with his father who was trying to intervene.

Israeli occupation forces arrested two Paleostinians and injured another with live bullets during a raid on the town of Tell in Nablus, while a third Paleostinian was arrested in a simultaneous raid on the nearby town of Qusin.

Local sources reported that Israeli forces blocked the two main entrances to the village of Tuqu in Bethlehem province, preventing locals from entering or leaving.

Hours after a Paleostinian gunman opened fire on a car in the occupied West Bank, injuring three Israelis, the Israeli authorities made this announcement.

What's more, dozens of murderous Moslem Israeli settlers, guarded by the police, broke into the courtyards of the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem.

Scores of Israeli settlers entered the compound through the Moroccan Gate in groups and performed rituals under the protection of Israeli coppers, according to local sources.

Israeli occupation authorities have been allowing Israeli settlers into the compound almost daily since 2003, violating the longstanding status quo, stipulating that non-Moslems can visit the site at specific times but are not allowed to pray there.

These incidents reached a head in April when Israeli police assaulted the mosque, attacking Paleostinian worshippers and injuring at least 50 and arresting hundreds.

In 1967, Israel captured East Jerusalem, where al-Aqsa Mosque is located, in a move that has never been recognized by the international community.
Another Al Ahram article adds this loaded background:
At least 190 Palestinians, and 26 Israelis, have been killed this year, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources from both sides.

The Palestinians see the violence as a natural response to 56 years of occupation, including stepped-up settlement construction by Israel’s government and increased violence by Israeli settlers.

Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war, along with the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem. Palestinians seek those territories for their independent state.
