How the Black Sea Fleet is being updated

Text taken from the dzen.ru page of Russian military correspondent Aleksandr Kots.

[DZEN] Since the beginning of the NMD, the Black Sea Fleet has been replenished with three pennants, seven more will come into operation before the end of the year. The most belligerent naval formation of the Navy is gradually renewing its fleet in the face of ongoing hostilities. Additional firepower from the Black Sea will definitely not hurt us.

The other day, a small missile ship (RTO) of project 22800 Cyclone entered service, three of its "classmates" - "Askold" "Cloud" and "Amur" - will be handed over to the fleet before the end of the year. Each of these small pennants with a displacement of 800 tons carries eight Caliber. Thus, the power of the total salvo of the fleet in 2023 will increase by 32 cruise missiles. And in the future, it is possible to re-equip these RTOs with hypersonic Zircons.

In addition, by the end of the year, the patrol ship Viktor the Great will join the fleet. The pennant of a similar project 22160 "Sergey Kotov" entered service on July 30, 2022. These ships do not have tactical strike weapons, but are equipped with a 76-mm cannon, two 14.5-mm machine guns in pedestal mounts, anti-sabotage grenade launchers and a modern sonar station. All this makes them an effective means of protecting other ships of the fleet from attacks by enemy sea drones.

In addition, in the very near future, the Black Sea Fleet will be replenished with the latest sea tug Kapitan Sergeev, which is at the final acceptance test. On August 31, 2022, the flag was raised on a similar tug "Captain Kotov". They do not have combat capabilities, but are indispensable for solving various tasks of the fleet - from direct towing to the delivery of cargo and personnel on board the ship.

A very good pace, given that the renewal of the Navy requires colossal funds and lengthy production processes. But it is impossible to save on the Black Sea Fleet now. He still has to take Odessa and Nikolaev. And they did not fully avenge the flagship ...

#8  I looked at the Karatkurk class pictures on google. It reminds me of some Minerva class corvettes that I saw in South America. It look like some of the capabilities might be like a Perry class frigate. It is more appropriate, in my opinion, for the Black Sea than the Moskva. It has some AA capabilities with the gun and maybe Sea Sparrow like missiles- out to 5NM with the gun and maybe 15 for missiles depending what is loaded in the canisters. It ought to be able to protect itself within reason.

#7  Oh, yeah, I remember that now. It's one of the 57 states.

#4  It can be. Usually it will cost you. The UK still has the Falklands.

#3  One thing is sure. A ship is not much good at holding territory.

#2  An accelerating and swerving foxhole. These patrol boats are cheap anti-ship platforms. Ukraine has no surface naval ships as far as I know. Adding them has some use but not much.

They are not a replacement for the theoretical capabilities of the Moskva. I say theoretical because many navies operate with units that are degraded in some way. I operated once with a South American navy that was proud of its two Italian made corvettes. One had an engine issue that only allowed it to go half speed. This issue, which they could not afford to fix, impacted every exercise that we did width that navy. We pretended not to notice.

I suspect that not all of of the Moskva’s systems were operational. I have a low opinion of Russian maintenance of naval assets. It is level above inshallah maintenance but still not good. Regardless, these little patrol craft will have cruise missiles, but will have short range AA capability only. You could probably take them out with missiles, but not gun fire. You can mortar a foxhole because it doesn’t move. For these little vessels, a missile seems wasteful, but they may get hit as the US is paying. In the end, the naval battle remains on the level of The Battle of Lake Erie, in that it is largely irrelevant to the overall outcome of the conflict.

#1  A naval ship is only a slow moving foxhole.
