Electric F-150 loses 25% of range with full payload, AAA study finds, gas version can drive 200 miles farther
2023-07-06
[BLAZE] The F-150 Lightning, Ford's electric version of its iconic pickup truck, loses about a quarter of its driving range when it's fully loaded with cargo, according to a test by AAA.

As reported by the Western Journal, AAA did a comprehensive test on the truck's battery by accounting for towing and cargo capacity factors.

With 1,400 pounds of sandbags, the truck's range dropped from 278 miles to 210 miles, or a 24.5% decrease.

The version of the truck used in the test was rated as having a 300-mile range, which means owners could lose up to 90 miles on their charge if they hook up a trailer before heading out.

"Our testing revealed a significant range reduction, but it’s important to note that the Lightning was loaded to near its maximum capacity," said Greg Brannon, the director of AAA Automotive Engineering.

The listed 300 miles per battery charge is significantly less than the gas-powered version, which will drive for 500 miles on a full tank.

#14  As Bobby says, this is not surprising. Now do the test in winter. Both without and with the windshield defroster blowing, please.

There are use cases where electric vehicles make sense. A fleet of autonomous JohnnyCab(tm)s roaming about downtown and returning to their charging stations while waiting for the next passenger would be one.

Pickup trucks, airplanes and long-haul trucking are not good good applications. It is easy to tell. Ask yourself: Do I want to haul around a half ton of batteries or a half ton of payload?

#13  Well, it's a given lots of "urban cowboys" never put so much as a sheet of plywood in the bed of their purty truck. But some people do actually use them as they were designed to be used.

#12  C'mon, Man! Even your gas-powered F-150 (or Pinto, for that matter) got fewer MPGs when loaded. Or driven faster. More energy required means more fuel used.

#11  Or, definition of mixed feelings: "Watching your mother-in-law go off a cliff in your new Cadillac..."

#10  I remember a joke from the early 1960's.

Q: What's a three time loser?

A: A pregnant prostitute who voted for Nixon and drives an Edsel.

#8  /\ EV trade in allowances not good. Disposal fees may be quite prohibitive. Most HOA's will likely not approve long-term backyard storage.

#7  You will have one expensive piece of junk on your hands when the battery life is over.

#6  25% drop might be applicable for newer batteries.

I'd imagine that it might be a tad more with older ones.

#5  But you can run your house with one. For a finite set of hours. I seen it in an ad!

#4  I had a delivery job in college.
200 miles a day, in a Pinto.
I don't imagine the Lightning as a delivery platform.

#3  It's time to get ahead of the curve and buy up ground for massage parlors and c@$in0s around EV charging sites. Then people will have something to do while waiting for their vehicle to charge.

#2  GAS F-150
Time to refill an empty gas using F-150 = 10 -15 mins.
Range in miles (city/hwy) 494.0/572.0 mi.
Fuel tank capacity 26.0 gal.

EV F-150
Time to recharge an empty EV F-150?
'According to Ford, using a 150kW+ DC fast charger, the standard 98 kWh battery packs can take about 44+ minutes. Charging from home will take about 14 hours to complete a full charge at 220V.'

The EV F-150 EPA estimated range is 230 miles.
But far less MPKW when used carrying loads over 400 LBS (☺ which includes the Bi-Ped's, for you Pronoun types out there.)

Now think of a truck used in daily deliver or construction.

Can you see the UPS/FEDX/USPS now?
1. Overnight & 2 day postal/package delivery disappears.
2. Due to delivery locations and distances customers will have to bring in, or pick up their shipments.

#1  The EV effort at Ford will continue until the Federal Loan money runs out. Failure is not an option.
