Turnout rises, several arrested as anti-overhaul protests enter 26th week
2023-07-02
[IsraelTimes] Organizers estimate some 150,000 at central rally in Tel Aviv as government advances legislative push; 2 arrested when demonstrators block city’s main highway
Assume they’re exaggerating on the order of 50% is my WAG based on the history of claims for astroturf protests against democratically elected governments in the West. After all, these protests are being run by professional “activists” with international connections and sponsored by the US State Department. Oddly enough, the organizers — the Movement for Quality Government (MQG), which called itself V15 when the Obama State Department hired it to agitate against Bibi Netanyahu when he was running for reelection in 2015 — hasn’t been mentioned in news reports for ages. These days it’s the Israeli army veteran group Brothers and Sisters in Arms that rushes the microphones at every protest.
Israel’s 26th weekend of nationwide protests against the government’s efforts to shake up the judiciary drew thousands to rallies across the country as the coalition moved forward with its plan to limit judicial oversight of government decisions. Police had expected an increased turnout, as negotiations between the coalition and opposition have collapsed and the fight over the judicial overhaul has begun to heat up once more.

The main demonstration was, as usual, held on Tel Aviv’s Kaplan Street. Channel 13 partner Crowd Solutions estimated some 130,000 participants while organizers put the number at some 150,000. Nationwide, the organizers claimed a turnout of some 286,000. Protests were also held in some 150 other locations around the country, including more than 1,000 near the President’s Residence in Jerusalem.
