The Mob Reporter here with news of the state of emergency declared one year ago, that allows special powers to root out street gangs that controlled many Salvadoran communities. They publicize the strict crackdown with in-your-face images, turning the strong-arm tactic into a slick, publicity campaign. El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, boasts he now runs "the most criticized prison in the world." It certainly has its critics, but also many fans. #5 given how his predecessors allowed the gangs to grow and run rampant, what makes you think he isn't now? Consider the NGOs and 'journalists' who are going after the program. IIUC some US Gov representatives have visited, concerned about the gangsters being targeted. If you are on the fence, his original sin was opening up El Salvador during Covid when our Message was getting shots and double masking. |
