Smoky New York isn't climate change ‐ it's bad forest management
2023-06-08
[NYP] While New Yorkers have become inured to the pungent smell of cannabis smoke wafting through the streets, the Canadian wildfire smoke currently turning the sky orange is taking our tolerance to new levels.

By Wednesday we were registering the worse air pollution of any major city in the world and COVID mask maniacs were back in their element.

But don’t fall for the propaganda that climate change is to blame.

The situation in Canada is similar to that in Australia, where green ideology and chronic government underfunding mean that the forests currently ablaze have not been managed properly for years.

Instead of dead wood and undergrowth being removed regularly using low-intensity controlled or "prescribed" burns, forests have become overgrown tinderboxes. Fire trails that used to allow first responders easy access to the forest have closed over as vast tracts of land are locked away from humans. Logging and other commercial practices that used to self-interestedly tend to forest health have been phased out.

#9  If someone came up with a good cellulose to clean fuel process, you wouldn't be able to find a piece of deadfall timber the size of a golf pencil anywhere.

And the greens would not be able to stop people from cashing in on it.

#8  Bad forest management. Maybe they should have ignored the tree huggers and did some controlled burns. Just don't ask the US Forest Service on that. Their concept of controlled burn is full scorched earth in New Mexico.

#7  Ha.
Imagine being a real refugee, and lucky you are sent to the sanctuary city of sanctuary cities, location star of nearly every US action movie of the last 2 decades, the one and only famous New York City, Statue of Liberty, UN Headquarters, and own style of pizza.

You get there. The people favored by the government are hostile. There are energy blackouts. Food rationing. Assigned concrete government housing. Drug addled gangs rule the streets. Horrible air pollution. Likely to get mugged on the way from the grocery, if the grocery has what you were looking for.

You know. Just like back home.

#6  Maybe the mayor can use the smoke to spook the immigrants.

#5  All these New Yorkers who are so shocked at a little smoke in the air should come to California in the fall when our forests are burning. You talk about bad forest management...

#4  I love the smell of burning pine tree in the morning. It smells like victory Central California.

#3  When I think of Uvalde, it will always be of the tacticool tough guy using the hand sanitizer dispenser while children were being killed.

#2  Some day, historians will look back and conclude that there was climate change. The intellectual climate went straight to hell...

#1  There's only so much Attention Span Juice, if you will, in an organization. DIE protocols seems to use it up more than it gets replenished, and the first organization system fails seem to be emergency response, then preparedness.

You got Hoss on station, get the call out, and your team saves the day up to and including resuscitating a burnt and smoke filled baby moose. Pictures taken, moose gets a name, papers made. Then Hoss gets hammered because there were not enough Canadians of Atlantian Descent in the photos.

Real life would be the Uvalde Sheriff Department. Look at their Boss Poster picture; it looks like an advertisement for United Colors of Benetton: Tacticool Department. Aggressive response traded for deescalation, situational awareness from target approach to making sure your hands are sanitized.
