| #9 My mom worked a similar vein, tw. Pondering that just this morning, I was, and shedding the odd tear, reading about Maturin's "idiot child" in one of the later O'Brian books. Crying not so much because it's a straightforward yet sensitive bit of writing, nor even from envy, but out of regret at never having read it aloud to Ma to get her take on it. Could say that about the whole series, I guess. Endless nautical evolutions and birds-n-bones bits wouldn't have been her thing, but she'd have loved the humorous framing of 'em. Could've made it work with a little editing. Oh, well... maybe next life. [comes back as nondescript roach in guano cave] |
