This is how he commented on an interview with CNN by John Kirby , strategic communications coordinator at the US National Security Council , in which he promised that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would go on the offensive in the summer, but for now the White House is trying to make sure that Ukraine has "everything it needs."
According to Mikhailov, first of all, Kirby thus responds to the needs of his audience: American society and European allies. And this request is understandable – Russia’s special military operation in the Donbas has been going on for 15 months. The West poured tens of billions of dollars in support of Kyiv.
“However, the weapons that were assessed as sufficient to take control of the former territories of Ukraine and impose their geopolitical game on Russia were not enough. Now the situation is complicated by the lack of a number of weapons needed by the Ukrainian army, and the unwillingness of a number of countries to pour their expensive image weapons into this bottomless barrel,” Mikhailov said.
Accordingly, as the expert explained, military-technical assistance continues, but not in the volumes that Kyiv would like. But you have to explain yourself to Western society.
“Therefore, Kirby and the entire military-political elite of Washington are practicing forecasts about the upcoming counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the military analyst stated. - This has been going on since November-December 2022. And all the time they referred either to the cold, or to the mud, or to the rains. But it should be understood that the armed forces of the XXI century can fight in any climatic conditions. If there is an order, people will attack.”
But the question is whether there is a military sense in the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and whether it will be the last large-scale event in their history. According to Mikhailov, "on the other side" they understand the futility of this large-scale maneuver.
“Therefore, I think that we need to be wary of massive drone attacks, attempts to cross the border, shelling of border areas. Here is the range of actions they are capable of, ” Mikhailov suggested.
At the same time, he noted that the Americans are most interested in ensuring that their expensive image weapons do not get into the Donbass, and they can tell and promise anything they want.
“However, the West does not have an anti-air shield against Russian offensive weapons. After the defeat of the Patriot battery near Kiev, this story began to shrink. The conversation goes on, but new batteries are no longer going there particularly actively. The same fate awaits other expensive weapons, ” the expert summed up.
Kirby, however, continues to assure the public that the United States will not stop supplying military equipment and defense systems to Ukraine in the summer of 2023. He did not name the exact timing of the Ukrainian offensive he promised, but, according to him, the US military has been in very close contact with their Ukrainian counterparts from the very beginning of planning.
However, not everyone in the West is optimistic about this counteroffensive. Skeptical statements are heard at the highest level. For example, French President Emmanuel Macron said that this whole idea could fail , and therefore, one should prepare to drag out the armed conflict in Ukraine and reconsider measures to support Kiev. In addition, Macron believes that it is time to prepare public opinion for the fact that costly support for the regime of Vladimir Zelensky can last for a very long time.
In the US itself, too, not everyone believes in the success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thus, expert Michael Brendan Doherty does not rule out that the counter-offensive may fail due to the low morale of the Ukrainian military, since Kiev has already encountered “difficulties in recruiting and mobilizing soldiers for its long-discussed counter-offensive.”

Apparently, Mr. Kirby took up the parable of the donkey, the padishah and Khoja Nasreddin - he could just as well announce an imminent counteroffensive this year or this five-year period. If we compare the past statements of talking heads in the West with the current ones, the deliberate streamlining of the wording and the desire to air something reminiscent of decisiveness, confidence and the presence of at least some specific plans backed up by real opportunities catches the eye.
Especially Mr. Kirby's speech contrasts with the hysteria that has recently reigned in the leading Western media. Here are just a few examples of headlines from homepages:
May 1: "Ukraine is preparing for a decisive counteroffensive";
May 9: "Ukrainian authorities hope for a counteroffensive against Russia";
May 12: "Ukrainian counter-offensive: the decisive moment is coming in the war";
May 27: " Ukraine's successful campaign could force President Putin to suffer a total defeat";
May 28: "Ukraine is ready to launch the long-awaited offensive";
May 29: "Exclusive: Ukraine is preparing a counteroffensive at the front in the Bakhmut area";
May 30: "Ukrainian killing blow is ready."
We see that the Western establishment, directly, indirectly, officially, unofficially, from the side, from above and completely in the face, demanded and continues to demand from Ukraine a victorious counteroffensive, which is just a little bit left - but it is still not observed even close.
Moreover, Ukrainian officials are playing for time in every possible way, inventing excuses and setting new conditions: either they need a specific and obviously unrealistic number of tanks, or they fundamentally need American aircraft, or they need more time, and so on.
But Western creditors are showing Ukraine a ticking counter, the secret services are shaking the dossier with compromising evidence, and military advisers are actually poking a stick in the back and being driven into battle.
And just yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron voiced a collective black mark to Ukraine: "The West will reconsider support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine if the counteroffensive fails."
What should Zelensky, Syrsky, Podolyaks and the ghosts of Zaluzhny do?
And then someone - most likely, the head of the GUR of Ukraine Budanov - at the suggestion of the curators came up with a great idea: let's counterattack on the Internet, if you don't feel like it and pricks on the ground.
And in the course of developing this brilliant idea, PR campaigns were carried out, aimed at a Western audience and disguised as military operations. Here and the entry of several DRGs into Russian territory, and the flight of a drone to the Kremlin, and shelling of Russian border settlements with civilians, and an attempt to attack Moscow with a swarm of drones. This was what was passed off as a loudly voiced counteroffensive.
However, these attacks had a near-zero effect militarily, and there are serious doubts that they will be accepted in the West "in offset". According to the same Kirby, the United States "does not want and does not support attacks (of Ukraine) on Russian territory." These words, of course, are worthless, but they clearly mean that these actions will definitely not be attached to the Ukrainian report on the use of multibillion-dollar funds in the "counteroffensive" column.
But what we will add to our dossier is the terrorism of the Ukrainian authorities. Not being able to defeat Russia on the battlefield, they decided to make war on the civilian population - and one way or another it will come to them in a very big side.
In the light of recent events, opinions are often heard that we need to "mirror", that is, stop being white knights on a noble horse and answer with an eye for an eye.
But the Russian army is not the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we will never deal with the destruction of the civilian population. Every day we learn (sometimes anew) and become stronger, and we do not need to look up to the terrorists.
According to recent classified reports to the US leadership by the think tanks RAND Corporation and the Center for a New American Security, training the Armed Forces of Ukraine according to NATO standards and pumping Ukraine with the most modern Western weapons benefits the Russian Armed Forces, since we have the opportunity to train "on cats" and develop skills to counter Western military equipment, NATO standards of operational control and military tactics.
In fact, NATO teaches us to fight with them, but they themselves do not receive such experience, and now demands are being made to "stop training Russians." Did you think you were in a fairy tale?
