At least 153 of the prisoners rounded up in El Salvador's notorious 'war on gangs' and shipped to huge new prisons without trial are now DEAD, human rights group warns
2023-06-01
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] At least 153 El Salvador prisoners were tortured and killed as part of the country's notorious 'war on gangs' regime, a new human rights group report has said.

A report from rights group Cristosal said dozens of people had died in state custody after being imprisoned without trial after El Salvador instituted emergency powers in March 2022 to confront the country's powerful street gangs.

All of those who died in prison had not been convicted of the crime they were accused of committing at the time of their arrest. Four women were among the dead. The rest were men.

The deaths were the result of torture, and systematic and serious injuries, the report said. Nearly half of the victims suffered violent deaths.

El Salvador opened a mega-prison earlier this year to house some 40,000 suspected gang members that authorities had rounded up. At the time, the country's security minister warned that inmates 'will never walk out of here'.
That’s the so-called Terrorist Confinement Centre (CECOT), in Tecoluca.

#12  Whatever the motivation, they have at least 3 years of cleaning house.

Housing for Crypto, sure. Why not. Mongolia and Niger flagged ships and all.

#11  El Salvador is also in to crypto/Bitcoin BIG time...surely the powers that be don't take too kindly to that.

#9  We had an article about that prison when it opened for business in February. It was designed to be a brutal punishment for El Salvador’s most brutal criminals. I added the link at the bottom of the article, along with the name of the thing.

#7  This is, if I'm understanding the program, the response to El Salvador in response to the execution of a police officer, sending out some 8000 soldiers and rounding up everyone in that area who has a gang tat. If talking to someone new to the gang, this is the birthplace of MS-13, among other local fun and quirky personalities.

#6  *mayhem ensuing*

El Salvador: Take every prisoner in this block with a gang tat, line them up noses to assholes, and if the mayhem doesn't stop immediately, execute them.

HRG: oh noes extrajudicial! Their rights! Outrageous! Sanctions!

*mahem quits immediately*

#5  HRG: orhmygosh super prison police state dictatorship! Unacceptable! Intervention!

El Salvador: We have a lot of problems here, and each of the 40,000 cots is a solution. This is El Salvador and we will deal with it, so piss off. If you want to be part of the solution, then stop aiding the gangs.

HRG: err, ummm, ehhh, whatever do you mean?

El Salvador: Like I said then, piss off.

#4  El Salvador is the target of a smear campaign. Not only are they not playing along, what they are doing is contrary to The Message and effective.

Covid for example. When the US messaging was ramped up to Super Bowl Spreader and buying paint will kill thousends, El Salvador released a PSA, "Move around, get out of the house, exercise and eating right is the best defense."

#3  40,000 violent individuals tend to kill each other for various reasons. I am surprised the number killed is not higher. And I call bull$hit on authorities imprisoning and then killing; everyone knows it is much cheaper to just kill them during the roundup.

#1  So they have a group of felons, proudly violent and intractable in custody and they are getting thinned out the old fashioned way.

What exactly is the problem? That somebody, somewhere took a stand for civilization and said 'No more, this ends here and it ends now.'

Or is it that it somehow interrupts the fantasy that it represents the complexity of modern times or whatever is the new media trope.

Large and newly wealthy multi national drug gangs are a violent threat to civilized order. Just like the Islamic state crowd. They are both a proudly declared enemy and it is a matter of time and circumstance only until we each face off personally.

153 (at least!) out of 40,000? In a sane world those casualty figures would be reversed. Past a certain point raising the Black Flag isn't a statement or a position. Rather a necessity of the enemy's own construct for survival. Deus vult.
