President warns PM of 'contempt of court' if polls not held 'as per given timeframe' |

In the letter written to the PM yesterday, the President emphasized that all concerned exÂecutive authorities of federal and provincial governments should be directed to refrain from abuse of human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... and assist the ElecÂtion Commission of PaÂkistan (ECP) for holdÂing general elections in Punjab and Khyber PaÂkhtunkhwa, within the timeframe, in compliÂance of Supreme Court’s order dated 1st March, 2023, to avoid further complications including contempt of court. The President said that he was writing the letter as events had takÂen place in the recent past that were highlighted by the print, electronic and social media about glaring violations of fundamental and human rights that needed to be brought to the Prime Minister’s notice to ensure remedial measures and preventive action. The President stated that elecÂtions of provincial assemblies, in case of their dissolution unÂder Article 105 or Article 112, were required to be held within 90 days under Article 224 (2) of the Constitution. He added that the Supreme Court of Pakistain vide its order dated 1st March, 2023 had directed the ECP to propose date(s) to the PresiÂdent for holding the poll withÂin 90 days or on a date that deÂviates to barest minimum from aforesaid deadline. The move came after the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) had postponed the upcoming elections in Punjab — initially scheduled to be held on April 30 — citing securiÂty reasons as the major cause behind the change in plans. The prime minister, in response to the president’s letter, said that he was constrained to express his disÂappointment at the blatant partisan nature of the letter, "which in parts reads like a Press Release of the OpÂposition political party i.e. the PakiÂstan Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... (PTI). "Mr. President, the Constitution does not vest any powers in or as signs any functions to the PresiÂdent whereby the President can seek explanation from the GovÂernment or the Prime Minister. The only reason I am responding to your letter is because I want to bring your partisan attitude and actions on record and to set the reÂcord of our Government straight," the contents of the letter shared by the PM Office Media Wing quoted the prime minister as saying. The prime minister stressed that he was fully aware of his duties and the duties of the federal governÂment under the Constitution and the government was fully comÂmitted to preserve, protect and defend the constitution and enÂsure that the fundamental rights guaranteed to the citizens of PaÂkistan were not violated. |
