Israeli settlers attack Church of Gethsemane in Jerusalem
2023-03-20
There was nothing about the attempted vandalism in the Times of Israel as of last night.
Nor JPost this AM
[AlAhram] Israeli settlers tried this morning to attack the Church of Gethsemane in occupied Jerusalem, according to the Paleostinian Authority’s Governorate of Jerusalem.
...which does not actually govern in Jerusalem, though the Palestinian Authority is happy to pretend it does...
The Governorate said two Israeli settlers broke into the church and tried to sabotage the content inside the church, but were confronted and foiled by a Paleostinian man who was present at the church.
so we have his word on this. Hokay.
The Paleostinian Presidential Committee of Church Affairs condemned the failed attack. Chairman of the Committee, Ramzi Khoury, said in a press statement, "The holy warrior and fascist
...anybody you disagree with, damn them...
Israeli government is the sponsor of all the crimes committed by settlers against the Paleostinian people and against Islamic and Christian sanctities."

Khoury urged "the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
, the International Criminal Court and the churches of the world to take urgent and immediate action to stop all Israeli racist and holy warrior practices, to provide protection for the Paleostinian people and Islamic and Christian sanctities, and to ensure the implementation of relevant international laws".

Earlier this year, Israeli settlers vandalised a Christian cemetery in occupied Jerusalem over the New Year holidays, smashing crosses and knocking down headstones on more than 30 graves.

In December 2021, patriarchs and heads of churches in Jerusalem warned that "Christians have become the target of frequent and sustained attacks by fringe radical groups", referring to Israeli far-right activist muppets.

#5  WTF? Would somebody mind explaining to me why any ultraorthodox Jew would attack an Orthodox Church? If true, it strikes me as bizarre.

#3  The Times of Israel caught up:

The Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday denounced what it called a “heinous terrorist attack” on a church at the Tomb of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem.

The Israel Police said earlier in the day that a 27-year-old resident of southern Israel had been arrested over “a violent incident” at the church in East Jerusalem, without providing further details on the suspect’s identity.

The Greek Orthodox Church said it “denounces the attempt to cause physical harm to Archbishop Joachim, who was leading the service, as well as the attack on one of the priests in the church.”

In a statement, it called for “international protection of holy sites.”

“Terrorist attacks, by radical Israeli groups, targeting churches, cemeteries, and Christian properties… have become almost a daily occurrence that evidently increases in intensity during Christian holidays,” it said.

The incident occurred as Christians mark Lent.

Bilal Abu Nab, a vendor who works near the church, told AFP that the attack was committed by two Jewish men, one wearing a yarmulke and the other wearing tzitzit.

He said a priest had been injured in the forehead, and police were called but arrived more than half an hour later.

Without mentioning a second assailant, the police said the apprehended suspect entered the church with an iron bar and that there were no injuries.

Tsitsit refers to an under vest with ritual fringes so that the ultra-Orthodox gentleman is always prepared for praying with out need to pull out a proper prayer shawl. See here.

Probably a big reason Israel doesn't relax it's private gun ownership laws.
